What do you think is the best introduction to Autechre? (What album / song would you show to someone who has never heard your music before?)

@Rob Ae

How did it go with your solo Gescom Tour? Do you Enjoy touring alone? :)

Im hunting down and made a playlist for your set from Strange Brew Bristol uploaded on my Youtube Channel. Hope it’s OK for you?

Do you think the playlist looks accurate?

What is the ID of the track playing right before Stud? You can hear it clearly after 1 hour mark in this set.

Have you ever read Tsutomu Nihei's work, especially "Blame!"? For some reason his drawings and the themes of the manga matches well with your music.

yeah i love Blame!, in fact i was binging it when we were putting NTS Sessions together

As long time rap listeners, what do you think of the current state of the genre (beside the Neo boom bap of Griselda and Roc Marci) ? Don’t you think the genre is dying a bit ? I mean it’s on top of the charts for the last 15/20 years but I hear nothing groundbreaking in the big albums like those from Kendrick Lamar, curious to hear your opinion.

have you guys watched tv shows/movies or played video games lately

My home country is Sweden so I wonder about you guys thoughts on the venue In Slaktkyrkan Stockholm? I heard of fellow Swedish fans that said the sound was huge and incredible bassy like HUGE BASS!

Do you  guys planning releasing that set in the future?

Cheers! =)

yeah

does online brainrot (tv shows, streaming content, piss farting about on social media, etc.) something you need to deal with or not really? do you have background fodder playing while working on tunes or do you turn the distractions off and work solely on the music when working on music? maybe not something you deal with but curious if you have thoughts on this balance or if you deal with this stuff as Professional Creatives.

with all or most of your music nowadays being software based, is reproducibility something you care about at all? do you have a repo or copies of the old system around? like, could you go back to the system you were using say 9 years ago and recreate the elseq tracks, or is that lost to time? or is the current setup backwards compatible?

i have a lot of the old hardware sat around, most LegoFeet and Aerly stuff like macs and interfaces and HDs all stacked, in a way we could one day have a running time capsule - like a turnkey setup which could instantly perform works of that time. i keep them all grouped in such a way it looks doable

tbh was a nice idea but some of the macs OSs were updates so that they had the latest apps but some werent capable of actually performing the exact same tasks they did at the time of each release, so its all a bit pie in the sky, but i dont mind

Hello Sean and Rob!!
Thx for being such huge inspirations to me. All of your work is incredible.

I have 2 questions thooo

What have you guys been listening to lately?
Can we see any material using hardware soon?

rn i'm listening to Siege Surplus by S>>D

we use hardware all the time, am using hardware rn

Hey! Thank you so much for doing this!

I have 2 questions:

1 - Is it possible for the next set of dates for TTT to have Istanbul in them?

2 - Do you ever see yourself doing another era similar to Quaristice? in terms of releases with the Versions, Quadrange etc

Pretty niche question this but how do you not loose your mind working with modalys?
The blowing up part is understandable but the full on max crashes are just killing me.
It's aaalmost this amazing thing but I am just going insane at the moment.
Is there a trick to working with it or is mlys just this exploding unicorn?

Have you ever thought considering recommending your listeners to increase the hearing by cupping their ears under live shows?

When u cupping your ears then it narrows your field of hearing, making the sound feel more focused, like it’s coming straight into your ears and it also amplifies the volume of what u hearing and it will likely hear more of the sound waves.

You ever doing it while listening to your own sounds coming from the Monitors/PA-System?

Cheers!  =)

yeah we keep every iteration of everything, sometimes dependencies fall away but we keep old machines so if we had to repro something we could. we hardly ever have to though

Guess I specified. Will we see any material using just hardware synths?

hard to say i like reading other listeners opinions on this as everyones had a different start into this. some make sense others mbe not, with other artists ill skip to the start and skim maybe, then wait to get "that crush"

When or why did you have to reproduce an old track?

Hello Ae !

Any thoughts or anecdotes to share on the late Peter Rehberg (rest in power) ? Speaking of Mego, did Farmersmanual's big live archives data (dvd first, then online) inspire you to release your own live recordings? at some point, they too stopped releasing albums, focusing on improvised live sets… and what is your favorite Mego records ?

he spilled food down his front so often we started calling it 'doing a rehberg'

Hiya

What decides A/B matinee shows?

Cheers

@Rob Ae

What is your take on controlling music equipment via MIDI from modern computers and latency issues?

Old MPC, Atari ST etc Had very good sync via MIDI as that was one of its mainly tasks to do. Modern computers introduce jitter and with all the thousands of tasks going around the MIDI Will suffer even with USB-Midi.

What is your take on controlling music equipment from modern computers?
Is it good or does it do a bad job? Any work arounds?

How do you setting it up when you playing with your external gear?

Cheers =)

will you make a song with Aphex in the far future maybe

Many thanks for doing this kind of AMA again, and especially grateful for Sean chiming in during the WATMM crisis, that was just pure class.

Got a bunch of q's so I'll try to keep them short, and I apologize if some of them were already covered in other places like the Twitch AMA:

1. Throwing this out there despite the elephant in the room being the upcoming NA tour - any interest in doing some German dates? It still stinks how quick Berlin sold out, would've been my first time "seeing" you play live.

2. It was interesting to hear things like the insight on the Gamelan bell in Parhelic Triangle and the Gamelan-sounding physmod thing in Sean's Jamuary post. Does world music play a particularly overlooked role in Autechre's music? Or is it only something you're into purely because of how "foreign" it sounds to the average ear like microtonality and EDO tunings?

3. Care to throw a general overview on how your respective Rigs work in parallel during a live set? For whatever reason I've always been under the assumption that Sean runs anything percussive and Rob the chromatic/melodic side of things, with a master clock keeping things synchronized (in that case no shade on anyone particular for the dropout halfway through Rennes, that was a genuinely sick moment!)

4. Does AE_2022- represent the final form of what Autechre will be going forward? Rob mentioned that "you could keep this going for another 10 years" on the Metal Mag interview, could this mean that AE_2022- will be an ongoing thing for an indefinite amount of time with each set building upon the last, or do you see a point in time where you would like to bookend it to clear some space on the desk for an entirely new project of this sort?

5. What do you make of the fan-made bootlegs which chop down the soundboards into albums with unique track titles and material spanning entire tours (elseq 6-10, onesix exclusives, TTT—)? Do you have a preference over how people should ideally experience these soundboards? Also, for shits and giggles, what's your favorite and least-favorite fan title you've come across thus far?

6. spaces how V - Rob track? Love the sense of colossal physicality in that one, it adds to the feeling of a lot of your music trying to break the constraints of its medium, much like how NTS Sessions and elseq do so for the album format. NTS Sessions in particular I equate to something we can only pass by during the course of its seemingly-infinite existence, almost as if time itself is another playground for you to warp and distort.

Did either of you spend any time in Boggart Hole Clough during your pirate radio days? Love those old broadcasts - and my lass is from Blackley.

not really that's more moston territory. i had a mate from blackley though, used to write cru32. and we did pirate from a tower block there a few times

quite a bunch of questions about the modern live sets cause im a huge fan of those, among your best work by far!!

in paris24, around 17:40 minutes in it randomly double times, with what seems like a mismatch that occured between cell 169 and cell 170 with the bpm dropdown from 196bpm to 99bpm. similar question with manchester, late into the set it seem to have teleported from cell 348 (166bpm) back to cell 295 (157bpm) with that killer bassline section mid climax. been trying to see if i could map out the cells, and i was under the assumption that they had to be played back to back but quite regularly like on venice23 there's a ton of skipping every other cell to the point to speed it up, including quite a large skip at cell 105 for the polyryhthmic transition which totally changed the character. all of these caught my ears cause they definitely sound unintentional but sounds also like it's fits super well into the set. so my main question is how much do you think you can play cells just in a completely random order and still have it make sense as a coherent set? ive been imagining a funny outcome of non-linear setlists for this reason, (like starting on londonB and then somehow reaching lyon by launching ahead), or is this just an incidental contingency but the preferred outcome is playing them linearly?

another question, what happened with dublin23 at 64m-67m? sounds like it's the same cells as other sets with the elements but it's so different that i couldn't tell if that was a different cell alltogether. was that prepared as a special for the dublin crowd or did you rework it live?

also during development, is there such a thing as a "rob cell" or "sean cell", are all the cells basically collaboration, or is it a mix of the two where there are individual cells but also collaborated cells to ensure it's a smooth transition between them, such as maintaining the high level +1bpm increase that's happening across the entire mega track?

final question, any reason for the low amount of sets performing the material from LondonB and Venice? a bit sad that run of cells only got 2 iterations haha
