6 in 10 disapprove of Trump ahead of State of the Union: Poll

Over half of Americans disapprove of President Trump’s performance in office, according to a poll released shortly before delivering his State of the Union address this week.
In the Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll, conducted from Feb. 12 to 17, 60 percent of respondents said they “disapprove strongly” or “disapprove somewhat” of “the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president.”
Thirty-nine percent in the same poll said that they either “approve strongly” or “approve somewhat” when it comes to Trump’s job as president. One percent of respondents did not respond to the question.
Trump and the GOP have faced rocky political territory in the last few months, dealing with issues including concerns about affordability, their handling of files linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and notable Democratic electoral victories.
In a polling average from Decision Desk HQ, Trump’s approval rating sits at 43.1 percent and his disapproval rating is 54.5 percent.
The president was dealt another blow Friday when the Supreme Court axed most of Trump’s expansive tariffs, a notable part of his economic strategy. During his second term, Trump’s tariff policy has strained relationships with allies like Canada and the European Union, rattled global markets and increased economic uncertainty.
Trump will address Congress on Tuesday, with multiple congressional Democrats skipping the speech for counterprogramming events close to the U.S. Capitol focused on the impact of the Trump administration’s policies.
The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll took place from Feb. 12 to 17, featuring 2,589 people and a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
