it’s very perplexing and frustrating to me when fellow jews say “jews don’t need Israel”, like as if they personally don’t need Israel because they’re fine in the diaspora so all the jews who were pogrommed, persecuted and systematically oppressed can get over themselves.
What happened to “kol yisrael arevim ze la'ze”? why do you look at your fellow jews taking their protection in their own hands and decide that because you don’t need it no jew should?
if your brand of jewishness is selfishness, don’t be a jew.
I think most North American Jews have a pretty fuzzy idea of who became Israelis. They don’t know that America basically banned Jewish immigration in the 1920’s and they think Zionists were religious zealots who had lots of great options but chose to go to Palestine and try to take it over.
They certainly have no idea that hundreds of thousands of Jewish lives were saved in the ‘20’s and 30’s by making aliyah.
I stopped speaking to someone because she said, with zero self awareness, “Jews never needed to displace people from Palestine. They could have come to America, like my family did.”
It’s nice that YOUR family got rescued, but mine had their visas rejected. People on the SS St. Louis were sent back to Germany. People were unable to immigrate! It’s ridiculous to say that everyone should have come to the US because people were literally dying for that chance.
