IMPURE - Carlie

Description

It's Valentine's Day! Who cares~! Instead yet another sappy picture, let's have yet another sketchily whipped up character intro for my new dark epic, Impure. You've seen her before in this montage [link] . She's the second from the left and her name is Carlie.

Carlie was actually the first character I'd had a design for in this story. I really wanted to use a woman who was overweight to some degree (not morbidly obese or anything, but certainly not your typical rail-thin heroine). I figure realistically, fantasy heroes tend to be skinny from all the fighting and traveling and whatnot (slaying the hordes of evil probably burns loads of calories), so in order to make this work she had to be more of the laid-back, magic-using type.

It's worth noting that even in my fantasy stories, I very rarely use strict spellcasters... unless I can come up with a trick to it to make it a little different. So in Impure, magic users are called Rune Artists. Literally, they draw runes in the air (or an object, person, etc.); if done correctly, it will activate and something... "interesting" will happen, based on what rune was drawn. For instance, draw one type of rune on someone's wound to patch it up, or draw another kind one's feet to walk on top of water or on walls, and so on. Of course, if drawn incorrectly (or simply the wrong rune), effects can get pretty erratic. As such, it's prone to backfiring, making it kind of dangerous to be a Rune Artist. Because of this, they're are somewhat uncommon.

Anyway, runes are a pretty major part of the story either way, so you're going to be hearing more and more about them as the character bios continue. ^_^

Carlie Hunter
Age – 20
Hair – Dark Brown
Eyes – Blue
Height – 5’5” (165 cm)
Sign – Aquarius
Bloodtype – O
Occupation – Rune Artist
Personality – Open-minded, Friend to everyone
Likes – Old legends and stories
Dislikes – Violence, Scary things
Weapon – Runes

Carlie came to The Pureland with her explorer fiancée, Gregor. Although, The Pureland was explained to be dangerous and devoid of any human life, people who’d been there and returned told of mysterious relics and technology that had never been seen before. It was with that in mind that the young couple headed there; in hopes that they might find a cure for Carlie’s curse.

Two years prior, Carlie had been marked with a rune that bestows immortality. She hasn’t tried the “ultimate test” to see how well it worked, but she has seen its magic in other ways. In short, her body doesn’t change. If she’s injured, she feels pain but bears no cuts or bruises. She grows hungry but cannot lose or gain weight. And Carlie is troubled and deeply afraid of how powerful this curse is. Can she feel the pain of death but live through it? She doesn’t want to find out, but can't seem to find any way to remove it.

Whether The Pureland actually has a way of erasing this rune, she doesn't know. But it's the only chance she feels she has.

YAY, NO STEREOTYPICAL LOVE PICTURE!!!! But yeah, he sharing a picture you really had fun with is a sign of love too.

I really love your decision to make her kind of over weight and awkward compared to the other heroes, and that in someway it does work. If I can bring up Debbie Gero from Rain, I find that even though she is not as thin as Emily and Debbie, she was still charming in her own way. So in a way Carlie really does look like a really sweet and sensative girl in contrast to Callista who is more beautiful but mentally fortified. But its good you considered the audience in presentation, that even though its good to have a unique character, she should still be good to look at. Such as a morbidly obese person would be kind of gross to look at and tells the audience that he/she wouldn't be up to much adventuring. At least this way she can be more physically able to take up the idea of traveling.

Glad you still have rules in your magic, kind of like my opinion of endurance to perform a spell. But I love how something as simple as drawing a picture can actually be disasterous. And even though you can do it well if you take your time, I'm sure in the heat of battle and your companions have been stabbed with a sword you might be prone to make a typo in the runes. In game speak I can imagine you needing to make sure Carlie has a higher intelligence so that she can be more likely to pull off a more complicated Rune. As well as how many runes she is capable of drawing at a time, since I'm sure there has to be some kind of cool donw period or maximum number of output for runes. But I don't know, I'm just thinking.

I also love your first evidence of side plots in Impure. Going along the idea of runes and rules for them, I can only imagine how powerful the one who cast such a forbidden rune was, how intricate said rune is, and even how it affected the conjurer depending on the rules for casting such a rune. I also thought about stuff like this before and thought it was a good idea that you didn't (at the beginning) make her try to commit suicide to see if its true. Because a spellcaster should know that if she mortally hurt herself than the curse would be the only thing keeping her alive and that removing it will kill her. Same is said with old age, starvation, some type of imprisonment (trapped underwater or buried in the ground). But even if Carlie didn't think that far its still good to point out. The point is that I really enjoy that she realized she was cursed based on subtlety over just being like "I'm going to jump off an airship and see if I survive".

Either way, sorry if this comment is a little random. I guess my interest knows no bounds. Look forward to what Carlie and Gregor find in Pureland and what we can learn from her about the world of Impure and ultimately will she resolve her curse (and encounter the conjurer again).
