I know how blessed I am to have had my abuela around for so long, so healthy & to have such a close relationship with her. Yet, here I am, so overcome with sadness. I thought I was prepared & at peace for this moment, especially in the last few years. That I'd be content with knowing what a fulfilling life she had. Our last moments together were beautiful, too; we just kept saying we loved each other over and over in English & Spanish. She also gave me one final bendición (blessing).

As my Godmother, Cindy, said, "She was a beautiful soul inside and out. A rare gem that shared so much happiness with whoever she encountered." It's true; I believe she lived such a long life because she was such a beautiful human being that God wanted to share her with as many people here on Earth.

She was the most thoughtful, patient, loving, and understanding woman. She could relate and have a conversation with anyone she met. She was so many things to so many people: A courageous Latina, educator, sister, friend, wife, mom, tia, grandma, great-grandma, and so much more.

She endured through her generosity, faith, friends, and family. Even when she faced adversity, she faced it head-on. Everyone always asked, "What's her secret?" My grandma would always say, "Drink green tea, laugh a lot, never hold a grudge, and a little tequila never hurt." She loved staying active, reading, and traveling. She would never deny herself of anything. But had such great discipline; she would enjoy everything in moderation.

My grandma and I have a lot in common, from our favorite color (purple) to traveling, music, education, and philanthropy, and even our hands look alike. All these little things and so many more bring my grief to the surface, especially at what used to be my favorite time of year. But as sad as I may be, I will carry her in my heart and speak of her often, but most importantly, share her spirit with the world because her Pajarita, (little bird), as she would call me, will never stop loving her.
