When Quiet Sun had their original two year run between 1970 and 1972, and its band members went their separate ways, one would be forgiven to assume that they might been gone for good. However, Phil Manzanera, by then of Roxy Music, ended up successfully reforming the band in order to record their first and only album, which was titled Mainstream.
Beginning with Sol Caliente, which is the second longest track on the album (the longest being Rongwrong, the final track, also the only one with vocals), it quickly sets the stage for a rather atypical performance. While many tracks, such as the afformentioned final one, showcase sections of rather solid progressive rock, the album often suffers were the jazz elements are allowed to gain too much prominence. RFD, with its gentler tone, is the clear highlight of the album.
