I use the Pittsburg station mostly not the Pittsburg Bay Point one tho that's the next best one...
If they end of having to raise the prices for a ticket then this is better then shutting stuff down for me...

I really dislike seeing the end of some 12-post essay first, then scrolling down in my feed to see the entire essay in reverse order 😒

Sad to learn of the passing of northwest jazz icon Ken Wiley:

Mr. Wiley hosted "The Art of Jazz" on KPLU/KNKX for many decades, usually featuring his own records—often 78s. Some of my favorite shows were "song chasers" where he would trace a tune through recordings sometimes spanning nearly a century.

I only met Mr. Wiley a few times, but shortly after our first meeting (at the Port Townshend Jazz Fest) he gave someone my name and number as a fill-in player for a blues outfit, which turned out to be an important stepping stone in my starting to play out in Seattle.

I love music and stories, so I love concept albums for the union of those two passions.

One of my favorite concept albums is worlds not yet gone by sole. A collection of five short stories of near-future and future humans on Earth and Mars that feels prophetic to me, followed by instrumental versions in reverse. The subject matter of sole's stories is heavy AF, and I'm left with complex feelings after each listen, so I appreciate the instrumentals for giving me time and space to reflect on the stories I just heard.

Recommended for fans of indie rap and dystopian sci-fi alike 🚀

My wife Deb and I are heartbroken to share the sad news that our old friend Jason Snitker AKA Parmaster has passed away.

Par was one of the sharpest and most elusive minds of the early underground hacking scene. As chronicled in “Underground”, he spent years navigating the emerging digital frontier, connecting with hackers internationally and repeatedly staying ahead of the United States Secret Service during a prolonged investigation in the early 1990s.

His story in “Underground” includes the Citibank investigation that helped trigger the pursuit, as well as his time in custody at Rikers Island, where he found himself playing Dungeons & Dragons.

Par’s life reflected both the intensity of the early hacking world and the very real consequences that came with it. He was part of a generation that explored the edges of a new technological landscape before most of the world even understood it existed.

There will be an online memorial gathering on Feb 28. More details to follow.

The old-school hacking community has lost a true original. Rest in peace, Par. If anyone has stories or memories, please share them here.

Today, I finally got Summertime up to at least an acceptable tempo (I'm working on getting it faster but it's gonna just take practice) and started improvising over it again. The chord changes in the Real Book give it this lovely harmonic minor feel which is fun to solo over.

And then I started on the chords for God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, which in the real book are the following:
E-7 // F#-7b5 B7 | E-7 B-7 Cmaj7 B-7 | Cmaj7 B-7 E-7 F#7b5 | B7 // // // |
When playing them with an emphasis on the third for those B chords, you end up with this really nice half step resolution in the final bar of the verse where it goes from D# to E.

Now, getting this arrangement so that (A) it grooves and (B) plays at more than something like a slug's tempo, that's gonna be the work. But the chorus section doesn't have nearly as many changes as the verse, so it should be easier to nail. Famous last words, I know.

Two great listens today, to new albums for 2026:

1) Tomeka Reid - dance! skip! hop! w/Mary Halvorson, Tomas Fujiwara, and Jason Roebke (same group as on the Tomeka Reid Quartet album, but they're using that name here). This was a more accessible outing than we sometimes get from Reid but still very rich and unpredictable. The closing track, "Silver Spring Fig Tree," was esp. gorgeous.

2) Aaron Shaw - And So It Is. Bits of soul jazz/spiritual jazz, post-bop, along with brief nods to hip hop, but all of it vibes really well together. Very warm album, enveloping even at its most sparse spots.

Can't wait to listen to both again.

I am a luddite and to me there is a lot of joy in technology. In technology that we deploy for all our wellbeing. Solar panels and vaccines, high-speed rail and wikipedia.

But they joy stems from the feeling of being able to be part of humanity in an embedded, meaningful way. Not from buying shit.
