Was this another way to level the field of higher level casters? How did the likes of Aumvor or Larloch fair against insanity? Or was being an undead kind of a buffer against the weave wracking their minds?

...mere propaganda = Mystra was nothing "special."
And yes, ALL undead arcane spellcasters were mentally "buffered" against the Spellplague's ravages due to their minds not being alive and ever-changing. There was no physical buffer, so some had brains damaged.
