PSA 📣 plants are not a good source of iron... ⬇️

The iron in spinach is non-heme iron which has a lower absorption rate than heme iron (which is the main form in red meat 🥩) (Hooda et al. 2014)

Spinach also contain compounds which bind to iron and hinder it's absorption further 🚫 (Ziph et al. 2000)

So while spinach and beef have about the same iron gram for gram ⚖️ it is misleading the say that spinach is a good source 👎

For women of reproductive age 🤰 getting enough iron is extremely important!

And unfortunately, because a lot of women see red meat as "unhealthy" this has led to almost 30% of women 15-49 years old suffering anemia 🩸 (WHO 2021)

Moral of the story: make sure you are eating adequate amounts of the right foods 🥩 to meat (pun intended 😏) your iron needs!

Did you think spinach was a good source of iron? 🍃 Let me know down below! ⬇️

My mom is very iron deficient and has to get injections every 2-3 months and her doctor told her to eat 3-4cups of spinach a day. I told her to not do that and sent her several articles explaining why that’s not good and that she should be eating red meat especially liver to help her. She won’t listen and continues to be sick and shoveling spinach in her mouth because that’s what her doctor told her to do.

@sarahlynturner @kaitlyn_brooke_turner if people ever tell you “spinach is a good source of iron” they need to think about absorption!

For people who don’t eat red meat, cooking in cast iron can greatly increase the iron absorption of so many foods, especially acidic foods. There have been various studies showing these results, including ones in PubMed.

This is a brilliant post thank you! I was vegetarian for 12 years and then vegan for 6 and I was totally deficient in iron... I felt very ill after being pregnant and breastfeeding. I now eat all meats and am feeling much better 💕

But isn't heme iron also responsible for increased risk of several cancers? Also, there is evidence that it leads to coronary heart disease. Besides spinach good iron sources are apples, egg plant, chick pea, tofu.
