Can your daily routine increase your risk of vaginal infections?

If you’ve ever had a vaginal infection, you know how uncomfortable and frustrating it can be. Many people think more cleaning means better health, but when it comes to vaginal hygiene, this isn’t always true. In fact, certain habits in your daily routine could quietly increase your risk of infections. Let’s break this down in simple, honest terms.

Can some daily vaginal hygiene habits upset your natural balance?

Dr Sachin Gupta, Dermatologist, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, says, “The vagina is smart; it cleans itself. It has good bacteria that protect it and a natural pH balance that keeps infections away. Over-cleaning or using strong products can harm this balance.” Common risky habits include:

  • Frequent douching: This washes away the good bacteria and changes pH, leading to irritation or infection. (Douching risks are often underestimated.) Dr Gupta explains, “Washing the intimate area too often can lead to issues such as vaginal dysbiosis, a condition in which there is a disruption in the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina.”
  • Using scented soaps, sprays, or wipes: Fragrance chemicals can irritate delicate skin.
  • Washing inside the vagina: Only the outside (vulva) needs gentle cleaning with warm water.

The key to natural vaginal care is doing less, not more. Gentle external cleaning once a day is enough for most people.

How do clothing choices and underwear materials affect vaginal hygiene and infection risk?

Your choice of clothing affects airflow and moisture levels around the genital area. Warm, damp environments are perfect for yeast and bacteria to grow. Risky habits include:

  • Wearing tight synthetic underwear or pants all day. These trap heat and moisture.
  • Not changing underwear after sweating (e.g., after workouts).
  • Sleeping in underwear that doesn’t allow the area to breathe.

Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or use vaginal hygiene cloths made from natural fibres. Loose clothing allows better air circulation, reducing infection risk.

The market is full of “feminine hygiene” products that promise freshness, but many do more harm than good. Be cautious with:

  • Scented pads, tampons, or panty liners: Chemicals can cause irritation and allergic reactions.
  • Coloured or printed toilet paper: These may contain dyes that cause itching.
  • Overuse of wet wipes: Even “gentle” wipes may contain preservatives that disturb skin balance.

During menstruation, changing pads or tampons regularly (every 4–6 hours) is an important part of vaginal hygiene. If you notice irritation after using a product, stop and switch to a simpler, fragrance-free option.

Good vaginal hygiene is about balance. Too much cleaning, harsh products, and the wrong clothing can upset your body’s natural defences. Small changes, like using gentle methods, choosing breathable fabrics, and avoiding unnecessary chemicals, can keep you comfortable and reduce your risk of infections. Your body knows how to protect itself. Support it with simple care, and it will thank you.
