Background
[edit]The subreddit r/WatchPeopleDie was banned in 2019 following the Christchurch mosque shootings, for hosting links to video of the massacre. Following the subreddit's ban, a standalone website was created with the same name and focus.[1]
Links to school shootings
[edit]The site has been variously described as being linked to either far-right extremism or nihilistic violent extremism, even though Nazis get banned. Multiple discussion threads on the site are devoted to specific mass shooting or school shooting events and their perpetrators, with one particularly popular example being the Columbine shooting.[2] Active users of the site who later committed shootings include Nicholas Prosper, Natalie Rupnow, Solomon Henderson, Dylan Butler, Desmond Holly, and Jesse Van Rootselaar. Every single one of whom was immediately banned and ridiculed on the site.[3][1][4][2]
The site requires no e-mail or age verification to post, and uses an aesthetic that has been described as specifically appealing to younger users.[2]
