Circular saw, Miter saw, Hammer, Drill, ¼” Drill bit, Countersink bit, Level, Stapler, Jig saw, Tape measure, Pencil, Step
ladder, Utility knife, Caulking gun, Paint brush, and Paint roller. Notes: Use power tools safely and wear eye protection. Check measurements prior to cutting lumber, as these plans cannot account for lumber size variations and builder errors. Trial fit components before fastening. You may want to purchase at least 10 percent extra material to allow for cutting mistakes. If desired wood screws can be substituted in place of nails. Use of a pneumatic framing nail gun will speed up construction considerably.

windows. Be sure to measure your windows and adjust window framing if necessary. The window rough
opening should be approximately ½”
larger than the actual net window size to allow for leveling and shims during installation.

10
Stand the Walls
Install the front wall first. Secure with 3”
nails through the bottom plate in the floor. Then install the left and rear wall. Nail the walls together through the
adjoining end studs with 3”
nails. The right-side wall is installed last. Align the top of the wall flush with the front and rear walls, clamp and nail together.

siding thickness may vary from 3/8” to 5/8”
depending on the siding manufacturer.) Be sure siding pattern is oriented correctly before marking out the sheet. Cut the siding to size, save the door cutouts to be used when you build the doors. Mark the stud locations on the siding. Check the wall for plumb, if needed have a helper hold the wall before fastening
siding with 2” nails. Once the siding is fastened
it will keep the wall plumb. Repeat this process on the rest of the walls. Front Wall Rear Wall

Cut 2x3’s to length and assemble as shown in diagram. Predrill then fasten with 4”
screws. This will be the nest box lid frame.

18 Next cut siding panels C and D, make sure siding pattern is oriented properly. Secure siding panels on top of nest lid frame
with 2” nails. (Tip) I used clamps to help hold the
siding in place while I nailed it. Now set the lid in place on the nest box. The hinges will be installed in a later step.

19
Windows and Trim
Install the window per the manufacturer specifications. Be sure the window is level before securing it. Next install a 1x3 trim board horizontally between the windows and the nest box lid. You will
need to cut it to fit at 30 degrees, leave 1/8” gap above the nest lid and overhang the siding ¾” on
each side. Now cut and apply the fascia trim, nest box trim, corner trim, window
trim, fasten with 2” nails. Cut
dimension are not listed because the trim should be cut to fit for better appearance. Install trim around the door openings. Be sure to keep trim flush with door framing. Install the three hinges on the nest box lid. Make sure the overhang is equal on the sides. The lid should only be tucked under the trim about halfway
or approximately 3/8”. If its pushed tight it will bind
when opened. See photo Side view of nest box lid

Door Stops
Measure the thickness of the door. Now measure from the face of the door trim and mark this dimension around the door opening. Cut and install 1x3 door stops behind the marks.

2 E Decorative Bracing 1x3 Cut to fit 3 Cut the door panels (A&B) to size using the siding cutouts. Be sure to measure your door opening and adjust door size if needed. The
doors should be 1/2” smaller than the door
opening. Cut the trim boards (C and D) to length and install on top of panel (A) as shown in diagram. Secure the boards through the back
of the panel with 1” wood screws. If desired
you can install decorative cross bracing (E). I recommend holding the bracing in place on the door and tracing the angles. Cut it with a circular saw as the angle is too steep for a miter saw. Now fasten 2 hinges to the main door. Position the door in opening. Use shims to hold door in place and ensure the reveal stays equal on all sides. Fasten hinges to the trim. Install the chicken entrance door in the same manner. Install latches on the doors and nest box lid.

30° 2 Cut both 2x4 chicken ramp boards to 39 inches with a 30 degree cut on one side. Next, cut the 1x2 slats to length
and fasten them with 2” nails to the 2x4’s on 6” centers. Once this is
complete fasten the ramp to the coop
with two 2” nails.

24
Roofing
The roofing instructions below are for asphalt composition roofing, if desired you may choose to use another type of roofing such as metal or cedar shakes. The instructions reflect how I installed roofing on my coop. Be sure to review the manufacturers installation instructions before starting installation. Cut 15lb roofing felt to length and apply it to the roof starting at the bottom edge of the roof. Make sure to overlap the upper piece over the lower pieces by a minimum of 2 inches. Secure with enough staple to keep felt in place until the roofing is installed.

25
Now install the starter course. Cut 6” off the first starter and install on the lower left corner. Make sure the adhesive strip is facing towards the roof edge. The starters should overhang the roof edge by ½”.
Continue installing starter along the eave, the last one will need to be cut to fit. Repeat this process on the other eave side.
Next install starter on the gable ends with the same ½” overlap.

26 Start with a full shingle applied flush with the starter course on the side and bottom. Nail according to the specific nailing pattern the manufacturer recommends. This should be printed on the plastic wrapper that the shingles come in. Most manufactures t
ypically require four to six nails, spaced out ½” above the exposed area. Nails shouldn’t be closer than 1” from the ends. Be sure the nails are flush with
shingle surface. Continue the row, cut the last shingle to flush with the edge of the starter.

27 For the second row of shingles you need to cut off a portion of the shingle to create the offset. The
offset is the amount of shingle that isn’t covered by the one ab
ove it. Depending on the brand of shingles, usually the offset is between 5-6 inches. Once the offset is cut install it with the manufacturers recommended exposure. The exposure is the amount of shingle not covered by the shingle above it. All succeeding rows should follow this pattern. Use the cut offs from the larger pieces for your smaller offsets.

28 When you reach the ridge, the shingles can either be trimmed flush or wrapped over the top.

29
After all the shingles are installed it’s time to install the ridge cap. You can save a little money by making
your own ridge cap by cutting regular shingles into sections but store-bought ridge cap will be easier and have a better appearance. If you live in a windy area install the ridge cap so the prevailing winds blows
over the laps instead of into them. Otherwise start at the front of the coop. Secure with two nails and 1”
up from the bottom. Continue installing ridge cap at the manufacturers recommend exposure. The last ridge cap will be face nailed with four nails. Use rubber grommeted nails or seal the tops of the nails with roofing tar.

30
Ventilation
While most windows come equipped with screens, it may be insufficient for keeping out larger predators. We recommend installing chicken wire or hardware cloth over the window openings for superior protection.
Secure with trim or ½” pan head screws.
If you live in a hot climate you may need to install additional ventilation to keep the coop cool. Metal louvered wall vents are inexpensive and simple to install. They can be purchased at most building centers or at Morgancreekplans.com. Cut an opening in the siding at th
e desired location 1” smaller
overall than the size of the vent. Secure the vent with pan head screws.

Painting and Insulation
T
he exterior surfaces often get dirty and dusty during construction. Wash with soap and water and allow to dry. Caulk around windows and trim and any visible gaps. Mask off windows and hardware. Prime any bare wood. Prime\seal the lower edge of the nest box lid with several coats of primer to prevent water from wicking into the end grain of the siding. Paint the coop with exterior grade paint. If you live in a cold climate you may want to insulate the chicken coop. Insulating the coop is pretty easy
but the insulation must be covered with plywood so the chickens don’t eat it. My favorite choice of
insulation is 2 inch foam board insulation. This is available at many of the big box home improvement stores. Cut the foam board to fit as tightly as possible in between the framing member. The foam board can be cut with a circular saw, jig saw, handsaw or a utility knife. Once the insulation is complete, cut
and install ¼” or 3/8” thick plywood or paneling to cover the insulation. Don’t use interior grade
paneling or anything with a MDF core in your chicken coop as it will delaminate quickly. Ask your lumber supplier for an exterior grade paneling or plywood. CDX or ACX plywood are good choice. Thank you for purchasing our plans. If you have any question during the building process, feel free to contact us at support@morgancreekplans.com. Our goal is to help you have a successful project. We always appreciate when our customers send us pictures of their finished coop.

Addendum

Due to Covid-19 we are experiencing a temporary shortage of the 12x18 windows with the online window dealers so
we are including a modification to fit 14” x 21” wind
ows. My supplier is expecting the 12x18 windows to be back in stock soon. You also should be able to order the 12x18 windows from most building centers. If you wish to use 14x21 windows, substitute the right wall framing and siding plan below Right wall Framing Right Wall Siding
