The elevator, that unsung workhorse of urban America, gets no respect.
For a machine so critical to millions of people, it grabs little of the attention enjoyed by the more imposing figures of the nation`s transportation system.
Perhaps it`s because the elevator is so less dangerous than the other ways of getting around: Tugging all of that weight, day after day, it is said to be five times safer than taking stairs.
