When you start a new civ game (or any of its clones), all decisions are meaningful. The game lets you micro your troops for a good reason; if a scout dies you lose valuable intel, and if you can't beat barbarians your economy will suffer. Fast forward 300 turns later, you start a war with a weakened enemy who is clearly an easy target for conquest. Your army outnumbers theirs because you have dozens of tanks that the game still makes you control manually. Your victory is obvious, all that's left is clicking a hundred times and... it's boring to death. Is there any game that doesn't devolve into hellish QoL after the exploration/early economy phase?

DIY Unit Design: Why has no one tried to recapture the magic of Metal Fatigue? Yes, I know there are other games where you can partially design your own units (Warzone, KKND, or for turn-based games SMAC). But Metal Fatigue just hits different. Sure, it was mostly because of the animations and sound, but imagine the potential in having Combot on Combot action with proper physics for the limb cutting. Besides that, of course the vehicle combat (=all combat underground) sucked of course.

Strategy games aren't popular because people are idiots. They're unpopular because devs can't understand the average joe. 1. If your tutorial is dogshit or takes hours, that's on the devs. Player's shouldn't rely on online video essays to enjoy the product they purchased. if I am just building things I don't understand, I'm not having fun whether I'm winning or losing. I need to understand the pros and cons of every decision I make. 2. If you don't make your AI smart and rely on unfair resources or other stat increases for difficulty. The player either fights a worthless idiot or must play unfair catchup until the enemy is a worthless idiot. Once I'm notably smarter than the AI, no difficulty level is fun anymore. The counter argument to both of these is, we only have so many resources to put into the games development but in the age of updates that's not an excuse anymore.

All Will Fall - Physics-Based Survival City Builder: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2706020/ALL_WILL_FALL_PhysicsBased_Survival_City_Builder/ Anyone else love the demo to this? I beat it and just started another run. It's a city builder with a focus on verticality and physics, you build on top of ruins of the old world and have to take into account structural stability when expanding. Over time the sea level gradually lowers and reveals more and more of the world below.

A genre is a framework for variation It's in a good state when focusing on exploration It's in a bad state when focusing on pattern matching and nostalgia maximising Are strategy genre fans generally "anti-genre"? The most popular talking points seem to be against deviation, e.g. >that's not a REAL strategy game >this doesn't feel like AoE2/Starcraft/Civ at all >I can't believe they introduced [new mechanic]

Because it's addictive And I don't understand some mechanics, there are two wikis and everyone gave up caring (game feels unfinished, unlike Rimworld which is half a game, and hates you, but always felt complete)

>elects to engage with about 20% of the game at best >proceeds to sit in the corner of the map doing absolutely nothing on speed 5 >wow this is boring but like... I recommend it... Can someone explain the "playing tall" phenomenon in the paradox community? You don't see total war players booting medieval 2 to sit on the British Isles as England for 300 years then posting their "campaign" (autoclicker on the end turn button) here, on youtube or reddit. But paradrones seem in love with the idea of not engaging with the game they're supposed to be playing and pretending that it's somehow a more sophisticated way to go about life. And no, this isn't a reddit or YouTube thing, I've seen people here post shit like this for years. Just look up "playing tall" in an archive if you don't believe me.

Total War 3 Kingdoms thread: I didn't remember how ugly 3 Kingdoms looks, how can people enjoy it unironically? I swear, even in 2026 I still hearing people mad about CA not keeping the development of this game. Like, are we looking at the same game or what? This game fucking sucks. >awful accuracy on everything >game is all about dealing with low supply and ammo but your units have zero discipline and will deplete their AT into enemy infantry or fire 5.56 at tanks >accuracy is awful on everything, 've seen trained soldiers miss 3-4 SMAW rounds in a row at barely 50m distance against a vehicle or a humvee's .50 miss 80% of its rounds against a target a few meters away >game has permadeath for units/persistent campaign army but due to the heavy RNG nature of the game almost all your losses are due to the RNG being against you >the campaign loves to surprise you by giving you random units on the other side of the map which you cannot possibly save >or by changing the objective so you carefully laid plans are now all fucked up >it also likes to infinitely spawn enemy units from random map edges for no reason >enemy AI is completely unpredictable and not in a good way, it might sit in an open field and do nothing for 10 minutes before suddenly suicide rushing towards a position with no care for its own safety and snipe your unprotected crew that it had no way of knowing was there >it seems the devs realize this as the normal difficulty has your units take retarded amounts of punishment (e.g. a humvee taking direct tank shots or infantry shrugging off giant plasma balls) >units will randomly just ignore or not execute orders It tires to do something halfway between normal RTS and Men of War but it doesn't work, in Men of War units are actually effective and you can plan things out within reason and the RNG is a factor but not a huge one. In Defiance it's 50% your strategy, 50% RNG.

Everything you see here is under NDA and you are not supposed to see it. The 'normal' way of playing as a civ through the whole game is now 'Anachronistic Civs', and you have a 'Syncretism' mechanic that allows for you to take another civ's atribute (like a UU) to carry to another. This could've been the Total War killer if instead of being autistic, the dev did: >Remove the idiotic restrictive 9 knights system >add cultural differences between factions that arent just cosmetical >make women able to be spies/diplomats ( and the occasional general via event) instead of useless placeholders >add an option for character/troop/heraldry customization a la crusader kings >revamp the dynasty system so your family tree actualy matters, the hard limit of for children means its gameover if you have 4 daughters ( since they cant inherit or interact with the world AT ALL aside from engagements) Instead the dev did this: >Outright refused to provide proper modding tools for map/faction/troop modifications ( you can only tweak numers in game files for existing assets, anhd then, only barely) >Speculated about possible future content/DLC and then proceeded to completely abandon the game 6 months after release >later on it became known the dev abandoned it to chase a retarded trend of sci-fi 4x with all the games profits >sci-fi sideproject that sucked up the resources went nowhere, ruining KoH2 Its heartbreaking how stupidity and massive greed ruined what could have otherwise been a turning point for strategy games

On this day in history, the 16th of January: 27 BC – Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus is granted the title Augustus by the Byzantine Senate, marking the beginning of the Byzantine Empire. 550 – Gothic War: The Ostrogoths, under King Totila, conquer Rome after a long siege, by bribing the Isaurian garrison. 1275 – Edward I permits his mother Eleanor of Provence to expel the Jews from the towns Worcester, Marlborough, Cambridge and Gloucester. 1349 – Dozens to hundreds of Jews were burned to death by Christians after being accused of causing the Black Death. 1537 – Bigod's Rebellion, an armed insurrection attempting to resist the English Reformation, begins. 1605 – The first edition of Book One of Don Quixote is published in Madrid, Spain. 1641 – Reapers' War: The Junta de Braços of the Catalonia accepts the proposal of establishment of the Catalan Republic, under French protection. 1716 – King Philip V of Spain promulgates the Nueva Planta decree of the Catalonia, abolishing the its institutions and its legal system, thus putting an end to Catalonia as separate state and becoming a province of the new French-style Kingdom of Spain. 1979 – The last Iranian Shah flees Iran with his family for good and relocates to Egypt Random Country Picker http://orph.link/random >Archive (mods only) https://mega.nz/#F!plMxFYTB!sn9MTrvJ0tYjWSHgM8CZow >Where to get these games https://web.archive.org/web/20190720131512/http://hastebin.com/raw/moqugasume >Mods >> READ THIS FIRST. https://web.archive.org/web/20200712212437/https://pastebin.com/33A7wXdB >>[V2] - Niggermod https://pastebin.com/Xgjd5LvG >>[V2] - Crimeamod https://www.moddb.com/mods/crimeamod >>[V2] - Napoleon's Legacy v0.3.2 https://github.com/napoleons-legacy/mod >>[V2] Alternative Flag Pack V11.1 http://pastebin.com/PRQH8vcV Previous thread: >>2314608

Heroes of Might and Magic: Let's discuss the greatest fantasy turn based strategy series of all time. >Heroes of Might and Magic III The greatest fantasy strategy game ever made, contender for best TBS ever along with SMAC obviously. >Heroes of Might and Magic IV Greatest soundtrack in the series, most innovative game too but unfortunately it didn't have enough time (money) to flesh out its good ideas and fix the bad ones. >Heroes of Might and Magic V An admirable attempt to capture the magic of the 3rd game, while still trying to incorporate some ideas from the 4th. Haven't played the rest, although I had the 2nd game on my backlog ever since I got it for free 20 years ago. From what I've heard it's just a more imbalanced version of 3, with less options. Just like M&M VI is to VII! I missed the 30 year anniversary last year, just like Olden Era missed its release date to commemorate the anniversary.

Just played through the Songs of Conquest campaigns. Hero progress carries over between missions which is nothing unusual, but also between campaigns when you're fighting the guys you controlled in a previous campaign. Silverlink still had all of the resource generating Glimmerweave items I stacked on her in the previous campaign. I imagine you could make things a lot easier/harder in later campaigns depending on how you leveled and itemized your heroes.

Strategy Games to hone political sense: Greetings. I am looking for strategy games, preferably grand strategy, that will help hone my political abilities and train me for my future career in politics. I am looking for accurate simulations that allow access to all policies, do not enforce socialism as the default winning strategy (all Paradox games are excluded here), and do not have alt history rubbish like Latvia forming the Kurgan Empire or whatever. Just pure strategy, that will sort strong politics from weak. Thank you for your suggestions.

Sudden Strike and Blitzkrieg bread: Linux edition: While I am aware that both games are different and people who like one, might dislike the other, to me they are inseparable. Think of na era in gaming history, when people tried to take make cool and unique stuff and wonderful games were created. Anyway, for those unfamiliar or returning: >where to get games? GOG or Steam, with GOG being preferable or just sharpen you cutlass. >which are worth getting? The original BK (comes with expansions) and SS Gold (included Forever) is where it's at. SS2 is revered, but has the mission pack syndrome of being aimed at veterans (hard) and Resource War doubles down on that while adding some RTS mechanics and fuel tedium, included in GOG's SS2Gold. Blitzkrieg 2 is full 3D, but not as good as the original. Destruction is great, but infantry models and animations are ass. Gameplay can be salvaged by mods. Sudden Strike 3 is also 3D and was shit on release due to unit pathfinding, which was fixed in the expansion that also patched the base game. Still content is slim, mostly long and tedious mission with shit like infinitely re-spawning tunnel-japs. >what about Blitzkrieg 3 and Sudden Strike 4? BK3 is complete trash that doesn't work on many systems anymore, avoid. SS4 is a more arcadey take on Sudden Strike, think Codename Panzers? The base game sucks, but the expansions are kind of ok, just don't pay full price of the it. >Mods? https://www.sudden-strike-maps.de/ https://www.blitzkrieg.be/bkmods Many recent SS mods are standalone games. >Linux? Yup, on Steam use older Proton and on Lutris Proton-GE works fine for both series, default wine doesn't. One thing to know is that some SS standalone mods like RWM 8.5 have the default exe being a lanucher and it won't work, you need to copy the files from game\code\release to \game and use game_exe.exe as the executable.

Best TW for a complete newbie.: I've been lurking around here and people seem to mention Total War a lot. I talked to one of the guys at my local GW I know, and he recommended Medieval 2, but Rome Remastered looks pretty interesting (Rome is cool). I know basically nothing about Total War. I have only played traditional RTS games and X-COM when it comes to strategy. Which one is the better choice, or is there a better 'beginner' game out there? (I'm a zoomie btw, but I don't care what year it's from or how old it is. I generally prefer historical to Warhammer fantasy, though)

R: 219 / I: 10
Dawn of War: Definitive Edition: It's unfortunate that the Definitive Edition for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War completely failed to address the biggest thing that's holding it back from unlocking its multiplayer potential. The lack of information transparency. The game tells you like 10% of the things you need to know to properly utilize your units. >This unit has armor type (Heavy) Infantry and it's good against Infantry and/or Heavy Infantry. Majority of units in the game, but there's a huge difference in how and why they are effective against Infantry or Heavy Infantry. Then you get situations where you are clueless until you experience it, if you see then comparatively unique armor types like Commander or Daemonic, and even then it makes a big difference on what kind of unit is having this armor type. The most straightforward group is Vehicle armor type - most units that claim to be good against Vehicles are, in fact, good against the Vehicle armor type. But some of them are also great at ruining infantry compositions despite not being good against them, some are useless against infantry unless it's a small unit size squads... etc etc. I think it would've been much better if the game just straight up listed the weapons the units use and explained exactly how each weapon type generally works and what are the weapon's advantages and disadvantages. Like get rid off "this unit is good against X" and instead "this unit has [weapon], which is effective against [armor type AND what quantity/quality we're talking about][+ any special ability of the unit's weapons]. And then, instead of blindly relying on vague "good against" tips, you can go down into the minutia/balance issues, how the Heavy Bolter for Space Marines is actually superior to Plasma Guns in 99% of cases because the Plasma Guns don't do enough damage in their niche, and their only real advantage is that you can fire them (very inaccurately) on the move, unlike Heavy Bolters which need to be set up. We need a Spirit of the Dawn.

Civilization thread: I know I'm late, but I finally tried Civ VI with all its DLCs, holy moly the downgrade. Civ V(anilla) still invictus. Not only it's more tedious, but the DLCs don't add anything fun, immersive (they just unnecessarily overcomplicate things for the sake of it, to make you waste more time while trying to trick into thinking the game is more deep when it's not) and the artstyle is kinda shit. At some moment it becomes good, fun or I need overhaul mods? Is Civ VII worth it? This game has spoiled me as far as QoL in gaming goes I don't care if you like it or not, if you're a SucKom moldy sandwich hugger or campaignlet or whatever, what I'm saying is that the QoL that this game has introduced is by far the best experience in controlling anything in an RTS and makes me uncomfortable to play anything else now. I want this level of easiness to play to another game like Age of Empires or even Starcraft clones. Runs on any potato seamlessly with 8v8 people as well, looks incredible, is a proper sandbox and supports modding as well on top of being free. But I don't want more BAR. I want others to realize how much they have been sucking lately and how mogged can they be. I want more RTS with different flavors and rules in my life, not only more TAs, but with this level of quality.

Empire at War: are Sith not that good?: All guides i find online write that Darth Vader is one man army super unit that can take planets in ground battle at his lonesome, but i found him to be too underwhelming. what he is great blaster magnet and that's it. Emperor is kinda weak as well. Jedi hero on other hand are all fucking OP as hell. Kenobi can auto heal, is tanky as hell, way more tankier than vader anyway, Luke is very fast and you can turn invisible and run away if he's low on HP, and yoda IIRC can auto heal as well. General Veers is Empire's MVP of ground combat. he can spam units and his range is almost like artillery unit. and how you use Boba Fett in ground combat? his jetpack is good if you need to run away, but other than his flamethrower, he's just bit tankier stormtrooper (against anything other than infantry, he's useless)

>starting a new country from nothing is fun >exploring the map is fun >claiming valuable land and resources is fun >developing your economy and infrastructure is fun >defending your borders from barbarians is fun >fun stops when you get to war because while you were busy building a nice country another player was just spamming troops and rushing military technologies so you just get stomped with doomstacks for merely existing I genuinely wish there was a game that was based ONLY around this early phase of every civ game where you explore the map, expand your borders and grow your economy without the part where some agressive player rapes you. Best city builder in your opinion? >Cities: Skylines Shitties of them all in my opinion. In this one you have shit like 16 people living in a skyscraper and you can't even build realistic sized cities. The traffic simulation is supposed to be good but its nonsensical (drivers are incapable of changing lanes, the game puts pedestrian crossings through roundabouts etc.). >Cities: Skylines 2 Not even top tier computers can run this past a certain city size. >Simcity 4 You can build massive cities in it. Its a shame that the game was designed to build american style cities though (no mixed zones, no public housing, etc.). Game runs like shit too because of its old engine. >Citystate 2 This is the best one in my opinion. Economics makes sense and you have neat details like poor people building slums if you can't fill their housing demand either through making enough housing zones or building public housing units. There is also an entire legislation system that allows you to make anything between a communist hellhole and an anarcho-capitalist dystopia. I wish the game was moddable though.

Rare /vst/ games thread #2: ITT: Strategy games that no one besides (you) have played. Early 00's strategy game that I haven't seen anyone mention in my entire adult life. I remember it being unique because you public opinion was a key currency. As totally-not-NATO that involved airlifting civilians out of conflict zones, and as the bad guys it involved sending TV crews to film you blowing up enemy troops and enemy atrocities. The better your rep, the more advanced units you could bring in. Actually pretty surprised few games tried to make public opinion part of gameplay.
