What can't be cut in one piece?
What can't be cut in one piece?Water. You can cut it into drops, streams, splashes, puddles, waves… but there is no moment where you have “one piece of water” that stays separate after you remove the knife — it immediately joins back together (or flows / merges / falls apart).Very few other things behave that dramatically:
almost everything else either
  • stays separated once cut (paper, wood, bread, metal, cloth…)
  • or was never really one solid piece to begin with (smoke, cloud, sand pile).
Water is probably the cleanest everyday example of something that fundamentally refuses to be cut “in one piece”.(Other strong philosophical/cute answers people sometimes give:
  • a fart
  • silence
  • a promise
  • the horizon
  • tomorrow
… but water is the most physically literal and satisfying one.) 😄
