A ruling class that invokes God and practises evil

WRITER: Musaazi Namiti. PHOTO/FILE/COURTESY

If there is one word that is always on the lips of Uganda’s ruling class, it is God. For non-believers like me, there are times I wish God were real.

Because He would look at the corruption, the repression, the violation of human rights and proclaim: “You can use my name in any way, but you are going to hell. I have absolutely nothing to do with you. You are evil!”  Unfortunately — and it is big unfortunately — God never disowns people he should, and (in practice, at least) he does absolutely nothing for people who are facing persecution, harassment, even torture. I have previously written about this practice of leaders invoking God when they are doing evil things almost at every turn, such as keeping innocent men and women in prison.
