Since McKinsey broke the ice in the early 1960s, management consultants have sprung up around the country. Some are divisions of the Big Eight accounting firms, others are formed by retired chief executives out to make extra pocket money. All are competing for a slice of the estimated $3-billion market. But few contenders have emerged to challenge McKinsey.
