Discord has many problems but it also has a robust support structure tacked on to it. A ticket system, role management, stream announcements, all controlled by third party apps. And that’s not even including its advanced moderation features. Many of these alternatives are not built for scale

As a server owner I feel less motivated to change platforms to an alternative that doesn’t have these quality of life features. I have to look out for my community

I don’t think many people will switch off Discord. It is too load bearing, too functional otherwise. People switched off Twitter because it was falling apart and infested with RW bigotry, OnlyFans due to strong content moderation policies rubbing creators the wrong way. Discord hasn’t decayed enough

Discord is more like YouTube and Twitch. A critical mass will simply accept the state of things

Valve also simply shot itself in the foot on this. The industry knew this problem was on the horizon before the press began reporting on it and it became public knowledge among consumers. This was telegraphed. And, again, something Valve played a role in enabling via AI-tolerant policies

I say these things publicly because I know Aftermath’s contributors do incredible work asking and pulling at these questions, I think the co-owners should make sure they are doing that too
