What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Our vision for VRChat is to enable anybody to create and share their own social virtual worlds. We believe that such a platform shouldn’t be built privately, but rather alongside a passionate community who can help shape the future of VRChat. Early access gives us an opportunity to share what we and our community have built so far, as well as invite new members to help grow the VRChat universe.

So far our journey has gone well with fantastic contributions from our community and our dev team. In fact, a lot of our dev team began as social VR fans, and contributing community members. In the last few months VRChat has matured to a point where we feel ready to share it with a larger group. We’d now like your help to shape the next stage of our collective journey. We welcome all your suggestions, help with testing and of course your creations. What will you help us dream up next?”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“VRChat is constantly evolving. We’re working tirelessly on the core platform to expand features and tools that allow for deeper creation and enjoyment of VRChat. Our community is building new worlds and avatars every day. We have big dreams for Social VR and we want to be at the right level of completion before leaving Early Access. We’ve not set a time limit on that yet but as we move forward we’ll keep everyone updated with our progress.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“VRChat will be a complete Social VR creation experience on all platforms. We plan on making sharing, content creation and streaming easy to do together from within VR. We are constantly adding more building blocks and features to our app and SDK. Every day we wake up excited to keep improving VRChat. Stay tuned!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Even now VRChat is a highly enjoyable experience so we encourage you to take a look even in at this early stage. Come hang out, play games, and meet people! Many of our core systems are in place, including social tools, full body avatars, interactive virtual worlds and content creation tools. There are already hundreds of worlds to explore and more are added every day using our Unity SDK.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“VRChat is currently free and plans to remain so for the foreseeable future.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are formed in large part by our community. We are creating the platform but it is our users that bring it to life. We want to provide everyone with the best tools for sharing, streaming, holding events, making games or whatever activities they can dream up! We want our creators to feel empowered to make the most engaging content they can. By opening up our development to you, we can make VRChat the best experience for our users. We will be reading all feedback and suggestions with great interest! Come join us and help out!”

PLEASE UP VOTE BECAUSE THIS IS IMPORTANT INFORMATION

On launch this game was pretty cool, you could connect with fellow fans in fandoms. Take on avatars and even create your own custom characters to be as you want to appear and explore expanse world maps. Both pre-existing in fandoms and custom creations from some very talented people.

However, it has since become a hot place for children way under the minimum age requirements. Ordinarily I wouldn't care as most developers take measures to ensure that they are protected and harshly punish players who seek to exploit them. However that is not the case in VRChat as devs have actively banned streamers and youtubers who seek to expose some of the largest groups of ERP peds. One of the noticeable groups being High and Tied which have multiple public worlds that any one can join with little to no verification of age. These worlds engage in NSFW roleplaying with full nude models, and though I do not participate in such activities, do not care if the groups engaging are taking proper steps to ensure they are not allowing minors into PRIVATE worlds in which they do so. Their Discord is fully public and have multiple people who are verified as underage with access to NSFW channels as well as NSFW interactions.

PARENTS I URGE YOU TO RESEARCH THE GAME AND PREVENT YOUR CHILDREN FROM PLAYING THIS GAME. There are far safer free alternatives on the Occulus and Vyve platforms that will ensure your children are kept safe. One of which being Rec Room, a social game in which you can play multiple minigames with friends and strangers with a far better Mod team.

EVERYONE ELSE! This needs to be brought to Steam's attention. Far more mild games have been removed from the platform for less. These behaviors cannot be allowed to continue.

They either need to be more strict with what they allow or make it 18+ only. ran into too many adults talking to literal kids and saying things like "its just a game" in defense like there isn't a REAL child behind the screen or headset. Also why the hell is age verification behind a paywall???? just greedy and careless on the developer's end atp there's no saving this game. its only good for people watching and world hopping but even then the pros don't outweigh the cons. why even promote it as 13+ if they allow public nsfw instances and avatars??? its either moderate it better for all ages or allow nsfw. you SHOULDN'T have both at the same time for a game that clearly doesn't prioritize moderation.

VRChat has gotten worse, people are becoming more toxic and ruthless over the span of 5 years, toxic content creators have utilized past trauma as a way to win views on YouTube, this Proximity Chat guy, aka the Boogeymen of VRChat has made a dead turn by making a bargain deal with someone named Merlin. VRChat can't be a safe game anymore, if nothing changes then users will decline and the lack of moderation will go down hill. The game needs to be utilized as an adult friendly game, 13+ is no longer an excuse. Change your services. Please

Roblox for equally unattended children, gooners, and people with social anxiety. Good game if you like hanging out with your friends or being approached by the internet equivelant of a tweaker.

Be careful, you might end up liking it!
One thing you should understand is that VRChat is nothing you think it is, but at the same time, it is everything you might want from it. But first and foremost - it's a social game. And you're going to need to socialize here. There's not a whole lot you can do alone, unless you just want to relax for an hour with some nice backdrop. In all the other cases you're going to need a company. And from now on it's up to you to build your experience! There are countless different events, worlds, locations, avatars and, of course, people - all wait for you to find them! So if you feel interested - just go for it! And that's really all i can say about the game.

But i also want to share some advice to ease the beginning of your journey. Here are some things you might want to know:
- Most of the seasoned players use VR, but it doesn't mean you have to! You can start "desktop" and get a headset later, or even stick to desktop all the way! I do not own a headset [yet, hehe :3] , and all these hours of playtime you see are still worth it!
- Don't need to force yourself, just give it a honest try, maybe another one some time later. And remember to be yourself! You don't wanna make friends for the person that doesn't exist.
- Your experience is the people you meet. You might get lucky and find a nice buddy in the first hour, or you might get unlucky and spend a month without getting a single close friend. So if you like the space the game offers - just don't give up. It comes eventually.
- Try to find someone kind to help you get started. There are so many features that VRC just never tells you about. Feel free to ask them all kinds of questions - how do you get avatars, how do you look for the worlds, ask them what are their favourite worlds! Every person possesses their own secret knowledge.
- If your PC is not a fighter jet, then you might gonna need to tweak some settings. The 2 features you should try are "Shield settings" and "Avatar culling". Just look these up, they can drastically improve your performance. And the reason is...
- Avatars. These affect your framerate more than any graphical settings ever will in this game. Again, low framerate - go to the features from the previous advice. And for the love of god, please try sticking to "light weight" avatars. Check out their "Texture memory" parameter, this is how much VRAM it bites from EVERYONE in the same lobby as you. People rarely care about such things and this is how we end up with 20 FPS lobbies. Please don't be like them.
- And the last one. If you're a fluffy softie [Just like mee :P] , DON'T EVEN TRY GOING TO "THE BLACK CAT". This one is extremely subjective, but i see it as nothing but a toxic pit. It's a default world the game will direct you to and i suggest avoiding it like a plague. Unless you're here after watching some VRC trolling videos and wanna do the same thing. Sicko.

So there you have it! And for those of you who are still doubting if this thing is even legit - i have met some of the kindest people and made some of the most caring friends i've ever had. 555 hours, remember? It's all real, out there. A whole new world for you to explore. Our world. The question is... do you have the curiosity?

I went alone in this game for the first time in 3 years.
It's still great, if you know where to go so that you find "normal" people heheh
I still love it that the mute community is so big. And that people can just sit around in a group of people and watch, nod, and just chill.
When I first played this game I wanted to use it to learn languages, but I have issues where sometimes I feel like I can't be social or communicate with people.
So I did it for the first time again. Going on a public instance where they speak a language I'm learning, be mute. Sit aorund people who are having conversation, and just listen and take notes.
Feels like language immersion. And also heals a part of you that can't go around and make friends.
It's still my safe place to "hide".
To practice being amongst other people again.
I could never rate this game badly. Because even if there are many issues and many weirdos too. It still is the only place I can be myself even when I'm tired, hurt, or scared.
I can be just silent and not perform anything. And it is all ok still.
I do recommend it to people who experience social anxiety, or who are too shy, you can leave your mic on mute. And just nod. But if you do want to communicate and text is easy for you. You can communicate by writing too.
You can be broken in there. And it's not a bad thing. Many people are just the same. It's all okay. It will be okay ♡
