Google searches for “Discord Alternatives are up approximately 10,000% over the past 48 hours as users react to Discord’s upcoming age verification requirements.
Earlier this month, Discord announced that they would be requiring users to verify their age in order to participate in “adult” servers and channels. This comes months after similar age-verification requirements have become necessary abroad in countries like the United Kingdom.
Users are however, skeptical of Discord’s motivations and even their ability to implement these requirements safely. Last October, Discord disclosed that the service had been the victim of a cyberattack through one of their third party vendors.
Critics of these age-verification policies remain skeptical that rather than keeping children safe, that’s just a pretense to collect, utilize, and maybe even sell sensitive information.
As a result of this skepticism, users are seeking alternatives to the dominant chat program. Searches for “Discord Alternatives” have skyrocketed as users have begun cancelling their Nitro subscriptions and planning for the worst case scenario.
Due to existing age-verification requirements at the time, the hackers received access to sensitive information, saying: “The unauthorized party also gained access to a small number of government‑ID images”
Now that Discord plans to roll these changes out to countries like the United States, which has been having its own trouble with politicians trying to age-gate the internet through ID requirements.
However switching programs can be difficult for some, and in the past users have been able to use the photo mode in Death Stranding and Garry’s Mod to bypass age verification.
Alternatives users are considering include Stoat (formerly Revolt), and some are even considering going back to IRC.
