Current CBPO seeking insight
Title. Used to work in USBP (Ajo/TOC) from Feb.2024 (Graduated from Artesia) to June 2024, now I'm a GS 7 Step 4 CBPO in the Pacific NW since Sep.2024. One of the CBPO who left for ICE ERO told a lot of pros about ICE ERO, including but not limited to $50K sign-on bonus, short virtual academy. But what about the cons? And what are the chances I can get PDX? I personally is worn out from going through 2 FLETC within a year, and I doubt such rapid career changes is beneficial for me in the long run. I'd like to hear your guys' thoughts, thank y'all.

You don’t get the 50k bonus. You’ll only do virtual FLETC

I'm hearing no 50k. I heard you'll get 20% of that & would have to sign a service agreement for 4 years

If I'm no mistaken, the 50k bonus applies only for retired ICE employees returning to the agency and for former employees who submitted applications before august 2025, the bonus was structured as an initial payment followed by annual installments...but I could be wrong..

Why leave CBP unless it was specifically for a location? You make more as a CBPO, less scrutinized and not lacking as much public respect such as ICE, and its harder to get into CBP/BP. ICE..yea you’ll get your location, your non-uniformed LE, but your going to be hated and scrutinized regardless what anyone believes, you can’t tell people what you do with pride, it’s not a sexy job but you have better location choices, some field work (probably more with this admin), AUO is better retirement but you take more home as CBPO, and arguably better hours with ICE depending on FO. Stay CBP unless you NEED another location. Reason why a lot of people here arn’t CBP, majority failed the polygraph just to get DQ’d here. No polygraph requirement if you havn’t taken one, easier entry. Or, desperate for a decent paying career, they just want to break into federal LE cause they couldn’t make it in for local LE, or they work in a state where local LE gets paid pennys (lets be real) Also, the future for surge hires is uncertain with the next administration, maintaining the budget to keep all 10k ICE agents seems unlikely.
