Deportation Facility

Hey folks, I currently have an EOD 10/05 in San Antonio, however the only duty location available to me is a deportation center and hour and a half away. I plan on attending NEO and trying to get the location changed prior to starting. However, if that doesn’t work and I end up stuck at that location, can anyone chime in with daily life at a deportation center for an ERO? Part two of my question is if I were to take this position, what is the avenue to get a transfer later? I would hate to miss this opportunity but also do not want to spend years and years at a deportation center with no chance at doing street operations. Thanks in advance for any insight y’all can offer!

Check with your new office, they may have a commuter transport thing setup. I know a lot of those guys that work at the detention center travel in from the SA area. Those positions are the greatest need right now so I’m not surprised that is where the openings are. Docket work at the facility is challenging but you will learn everything you need to know about immigration law. Transfers are handled within the field offices as there is no national transfer policy.

There is a bunch of different units within ERO, you bid every year for it. Fugitive Operations is one of them, and depending on the office, you might get it or you might not.

That’s a valid point, I have/had been a street cop for quite a while so maybe I have a negative view of a correction type facility. Thanks for your input!

Bids based on seniority, performance, boards? Similar to trying out for SWAT or dicks or K9?

Seniority. Generally Fug (street teams) is high seniority but it varies by office. Transfers are up to the FOD to approve.

I was a Deportation Officer in Dilley, TX and you will not get your choice changed as others have been waiting for sometimes 10+ years to get to the San Antonio field office. There are many changes coming down though so who knows. Lots of paperwork but my understanding they are on a rotation for flights so looks like you still assist with international flights sometimes.

If you pick them up off the street you have to process them. So you’ll learn either way but you’ll learn more of the law side of it in the detention center.

No prior law enforcement experience should start in detentions. We don’t need officers freezing during an incident and putting other officers in danger. Going hands on, making an arrest, and utilizing your firearm comes with experience!

Hey congrats to you as well, they sent me an email survey and I chose Austin, out of Austin and Midland. However the following day (yesterday) they sent a correction/retraction, and offered only Dilley.

Haven’t gotten the survey email yet but if Dilley is the only place then Dilley it is! Hoping to get that email soon
