Anran Ye is the older sister of Wuyang Ye, and member of Overwatch. She was recruited to join the organization at the same time as her younger brother.[2]
Background[]
Anran's parents were alumni of the Fire College of Wuxing University. They fought in the Omnic Crisis and survived as celebrated veterans.[3]
Anran followed in her parents' footsteps. She was accepted into the Fire College, and was regarded as the institution's star student since her first year. In her third year, her brother, Wuyang, tried to apply to the Fire College, but failed to pass the exam, and ended up in the Water College, causing a distance in their sibling bond for a period.[4]
Anran was friends with a Metal College student named Ming. They worked together on a joint project to create a fire staff. However, the staff set the courtyard aflame. Later, Anran was aghast when she saw Wuyang talking with Ming about creating his own staff.[4]
Against the Tide[]
During Null Sector's attack on Chengdu, Anran, now a fourth year student, was among the Fire College students supporting evacuation efforts in the city as she fought on the frontlines. Wuyang wanted to come with her, but she refused, telling him to stay in the med bay. During the altercation, Anran told her brother that she didn't want him to get in her way. Wounded, Wuyang exclaimed that after all this time, she still didn't trust him, and while Anran regretted her words, the two parted on bad terms. Wuyang stayed in the dropship while Anran and her fellow Fire College students headed into the fray.[4]
As Null Sector kept making ground, Anran ordered everyone to fall back while she held the line on her own. When Wuyang caught wind of what she did, he ran in to help her fight back against the Nulltroopers. Anran scolded him at first, but quickly pulled him into a hug, grateful that he saved her life before they worked together to fight off more Nulltroopers.[4]
Wuyang didn't tell his parents about his role in the attack, but Anran did. Three weeks later, they arrived, bearing gifts, effectively reconciling with their son. Anran teased her brother, stating that the medal he'd won for the attack wouldn't affect his GPA.[4]
The Invitation[]
Winston of Overwatch noticed Anran and Wuyang upon viewing a video recording of their fight to repel the Nulltroopers in Chengdu. Inspired by their heroism, bordering on nostalgia, Winston set to recruit the pair.[5]
Elemental Kin[]
One full moon night, Anran received an Overwatch invitation medallion on the same evening first-year Wuyang received his. Noticing his oddness before dinner, she confronted Wuyang, snatched his Overwatch medallion, and he subconsciously revealed his unconfident acceptance of his Overwatch invitation. Hiding her Overwatch medallion, Anran falsified her anger as a result of Wuyang's negative response. She forced and dragged him, ten minutes later, to fight in the university's deserted sparring arena. Anran, wielding her fire folding fans, successfully induced Wuyang's full wide-powered Guardian Wave to knock her down and then with her higher martial arts, hugged her younger brother with her soaked clothes to show how proud she was for Wuyang's invitation from Overwatch. A few seconds later, Anran teases out her Overwatch medallion to Wuyang for her enjoyment, but instead, she received his criticism for her previous violent antic, especially her endangerment with fire, as the siblings walked out the arena under the moon.[6]
Trivia[]
- Anran's main weapon is her paired Zhuque fans that can release fire on their tops' edge via technology like Wuyang's Xuanwu staff.[2][7] Contrary, during the Null Sector invasion of Chengdu, she fought with her fire fists.[4]
- Anran's hairstyle changed after the Null Sector invasion, sporting a hybrid style of her previous one and the current Wuyang's.[7]
- Anran is narratively a huge Lucio fan.
Etymology[]
- Anran's Chinese name is "安燃", literally meaning "burn safely".
- The "Rán" part of her name contains the radical "火" (huǒ), which is the radical classifying the word as fire-related.
- When paired together with her brother Wuyang's name, it sounds like the common Chinese idiom 安然无恙 (ān rán wú yàng), meaning "safe and sound".
Cultural references[]
- The Zhuque, the Vermillion Bird represented by Anran, is the Wuxing representation of the fire element.
Development[]
