Actress Fareeha Anderson, the voice of the new Overwatch character Anran, broke her silence on the controversy surrounding the heroine's facial redesign. In a statement posted on social media, Anderson revealed that she also had to "regret" the changes made by Blizzard to the character's appearance, which arrives in the game next week:

I got to mourn Anran, between the design that I had hoped for for her, and the design we ended up with," Fareeha continued. "Because I think in her comic and the cinematic, there was a precedent set by it. There was an unspoken promise that said 'we're going to challenge the beauty standards that are plaguing and ransacking media these days.' Right? The Ozempic chic, the 'contour your nose', 'you have no nose', 'the tiniest nose'. And I think because of that precedent, people feel understandably let down.

There was an unspoken promise that said 'we're going to challenge the beauty standards

What is an unspoken promise? Did they just assume the promise? Was it a sly wink and a nod with no verbal words? Nonsense.

Also how is a hot asian chick challenging beauty standards?

Which one was supposed to be fat and buck toothed between those two images?

Looks like they changed the artstyle from realism to pixar in combination with internet people on bluesky having a slow news day.

"I'm in mourning because they made my character too attractive" lol ok. So brave of her to address the elephant in the room.

At least they're kind of admitting they have an agenda behind their character designs.

I like the one on the left better too honestly, primarily because it differentiates her a lot more from the other characters like Juno that also have that style of face. If there a bunch of characters to pick from at least make them look a bit different.

The one on the left on that tweet is much better.
Yes it is. You'll see the one on the right pretty much eliminates the artistic expression of the cosmetics that the one on the left has. To the point the right one has faded dots and no upper eyeshadow. The one on the right just looks rather generic.

Yeah, I don't understand what that means either. I genuinely can't stand dealing with folks like this who broadcast their malcontent after the fact with anyone that deviates from their personal, internalized expectations. But that would require acknowledging the fact that the result is a consequence of their inability to do the bare minimum and communicate.

Yeah, it definitely looks better. Wild that the VA is just saying the old design is better and people are slinging mud at her, lol. Was her delivery a bit long winded and dramatic? Sure, but all she was saying was the original design was better, and she's not wrong.

Yep. The left design has more character, the right design is something an AI image generator would spit out in a second.

Probably a dumb question, but is the person pictured in the post above the voice over performer, the model they used for the character design, or both?

Also, are they complaining about the "anim-fication" of the resulting changes shown in the right image?
If they are complaining about those changes (smaller nose large eyes etc) why are they using eye liner and red color contacts to make their own eyes appear larger on their face.

Is the drama the actual drama here or is there a real issue?

The one you prefer probably has to do what type of women you like. Do you like the BDSM lady on the left or the cutsey submissive on the right?
Bueaty truly is in the eye of the beholder....unless they're plus size with a peg leg and then you are just wrong

dear no-name VO actor I will never bother to learn the name of:

no one cares. Shut up unless you are saying your lines; otherwise go away.

Thanks.

Everyone.

and i too prefer the one on the left.

The new design is much more conventionally cute, a very different feel from that cinematic. That's dramatic enough to change the feel around a character entirely. Could be a mismatch (but then again I haven't watched the cinematic so idk).

The 'challenge beauty standards' bit is a little much (delusional?). Overwatch has plenty of characters that don't slot into cute or sexy ratcheted up to 100.

That's just D.Va with a different haircut lol

Yeah that was my first thought too.

Put me in camp left for preference. Neither is challenging beauty standards and honestly, whose standards are we challenging? Why the fuck do we even need for when it comes to artistic expression particularly in a cartoonish game with overly exaggerated expressions? It's just social media noise at this point for personal gain.
