My maternal grandfather traveled to Japan in 1898 after he graduated from college. I still have the artifacts he brought back. She is gazing at a Shinto temple.

1897 is the 30th year of the Meiji era in the Japanese calendar. The person in the photo is holding a shakujo in his right hand, so he is likely a Zen monk. There is a torii gate in the background, and two stupas in the back left. These stupas were for high-ranking daimyo.
