Frankly, this is both the most uninteresting and obvious point of the discussion. By nature we have a "right" to the status quo. The discussions should be focused on "should" we maintain the cultural fabric of America, really more to what "level" should we maintain the shared civilizational ethos. The fundamental underpinning of how nations and societies are organized is the real issue. An uncritical perspective looks at them as organized around individuals, which is the libertarian and liberal preference, and flattens them to functional value: whether they abide the law and are productive economically. This is where the right wing of America seems to fail to understand the implicit abstraction the discussion is centered around. Sometime in the past, likely due to patriotism, they were willing to remove the complexity surrounding societal structures from the family unit into the individual unit because they at heart were patriotic, and noticed that the old aristocratic system and methods of reliance on pure noblesse oblige would not be capable of catapulting America as a world hegemonic superpower. So they had to deal with the fait accompli and accepted the liberal framing that society is actually made up of individuals, and thereby it's quite easy to supplant aristocracy because meritocracy can easily surface individuals to the top of the social hierarchy. This was effective for a time, as @teortaxesTex said, as the country had mostly white people whose family structures were already correlated with the civilizational ethos. The problem comes when the structural understanding of the civilization remains at the individual level, and the primary optimization function is still GDP. You run into the current issue, which is that in order to continue supercharging growth and maintain power, the country must actually get the best talent in the world. Otherwise the other areas of the world where the peoples are inherently more talented on a group basis will catch up and eventually overtake you. This begins to dilute the cultural fabric of the country by weaving in different threads. Pure assimilation is cope, and if it's not it takes multiple generations to occur. The Hong Kongers who've been in SF still retain many hereditary traits typical of eastern civilizations. People tend to form ethnic enclaves because that is what they are comfortable with. Just like the white man is not comfortable living in a neighborhood of non-whites the reverse applies. Yes the Americans have more openness to experience, but that has a tolerance level as well. It is not an infinite tolerance until they become a minority in their own culture. The problem is there has been no legislation on the velocity of immigration and the appropriate amount of migrants requisite to maintain the cultural fabric that the right wingers desperately need. And it's quickly getting to the point of no return. This is why you see people speak with hatred and vitriol towards the other on the right. They can feel it shifting, and they know it's not good and they don't like it but they can't articulate why. The more intelligent right wingers may or may not have the capacity to understand, but in an effort to build coalitions tend to focus on easily digestible messages to the masses that can be rallied around. But they are caught in an eternal conundrum. Their views on an object level require asserting civilizational superiority on a metaphysical and psychometric level. The former is clearly reprehensible to likely the vast majority of sane people, and the latter is disproven by fact. And the liberal views are both legible and more digestible to people of a sort of conscience, and so they lose on that front as well. So what do they do? The issue is they for some reason continue to accept the discussion in the frame of the liberal, that society is centered around a bunch of individuals who happen to live in the same area, instead of a nation where familial structures are the method of diffusing ethos and embedding it in the day to day mundane. At the end of the day the falsehood that was accepted to ensure America became a world hegemon came back, as truth always overcomes falsehood. The current rightist political strategy will not work ever. There aren't enough white bloodthirsty people who are willing to espouse true hatred towards the other because the foundation of their ethos doesn't tend in that direction anyway. The migrants won't support them out of self-interest, because why would the other 45% of the population acquiesce to people who don't particularly care if they die or lose connection to whatever family and friends they have here? The political strategy is weak on all fronts. It may seem contradictory that I care because I'm not a white person, and am an immigrant, but I do think American values are good, and that we should maintain them as much as possible as the true outcome while ensuring that we are prosperous. The China example is apt, as maybe the only reason we were able to espouse such idealist ethics was because there are effectively no major challengers in the western hemisphere, and we have only recently come to a level of technology where the eastern hemisphere can pose a threat. This doesn't negate the idea that we should strive towards those values. A neutral observer can sit this out because they have no skin in the game, but as Americans we in fact need to avoid being defeatist and work towards a better country. What we really should do is espouse and profess that the cultural values of the American civilization are not just good, but can materially produce outcomes and that we can preserve that core set of values even with differing racial mixes. This still requires recognizing that we likely cannot continue the current velocity of immigration without adjusting internal politics and framing away from GDP as the pure optimization function. We just don't have the capacity to accurately and efficiently filter for people who are both interested and willing to participate in this sort of societal fabric. Immigrants are not primarily functions of economic productivity, they also contribute to the fabric of society. There are in fact many good things we can take from non-American cultures, particularly the industriousness of the East Asians. We just need to find the right mix and how many we can sustainably accept into the country while maintaining that group ethos. Maybe at some level this doesn't matter because of the "singularity" that many people think of. I disagree. The singularity is something worthless to think about. If we all die, we as individuals could have done nothing about it. The economic incentives are too strong to stop progress, and if America doesn't another country will. If we all end up being the permanent underclass, there is also nothing you could have done. Unless you have the capacity to join the frontier labs and neolabs you will likely remain as a lower-class citizen. Assuming those outcomes are true.
