This road looks quiet. Empty. Just a stretch of pavement cutting through the trees, with no end in sight. But for me, this road will always carry the weight of a moment that almost changed everything. Roads can lead to many outcomes. On September 30, 2020, DJ was driving this road after returning from Mexico, where he had undergone an unconventional therapy one that cracked something open inside him. At the very same time, I was at home, reeling from truths I had just learned. In 72hrs, my world collapsed. Divorce felt like the only answer my heart could hold. I wrote him a goodbye letter and left it for his return. I turned off my phone. I accepted what I believed was the end. What I see now was Devine Intervention and a perfect storm. Him…thousands of miles away seeking healing. Me…back home discovering the devastating mess left behind, with no way to reach him. Him…. returning, healed and ready to face his wrongs. Me….walking out the door. All of it unfolding within days…with no way to communicate with each other. A blessing in disguised. And then on that Sept 30th when he returned state side..a gut feeling told me to turn my phone back on. I checked his location and my heart dropped. My body went numb. We had just lost someone in our community to suicide that summer, and instinct took over. I put everything else aside betrayal, pain, anger and ran to my car. Sixteen minutes. That’s how long this drive was. But it felt endless. I called again and again. Straight to voicemail. When he finally answered, I screamed: “I’m coming. Please stay. I’m coming.” Within seconds, I pulled up beside his truck and his intentions were clear what he was planning to do. He collapsed into me, apologizing through sobs. We cried the kind of cries that break you open. The kind that strip everything down to what matters. That moment became the beginning not the end. Of humanity. Of choosing life. Of ignoring the noise that surrounded us. We all have roads that are Long, Lonely and Terrifying. But roads don’t have to end in dead ends. Sometimes, they turn. Sometimes, they lead us back to a new purpose.
