First two Dubai locations revealed for Elon Musk’s Loop project

What we know so far

A major underground transportation project backed by the world’s richest man looks set to change Dubai traffic.

The Dubai Loop, developed by Elon Musk’s Boring Company, will feature underground tunnels and eventually transport 20,000 passengers per hour.

And the first two locations of the Dhs2.5 billion project have now been revealed by Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai.

Speaking at the World Governments Summit on Tuesday February 3, it was revealed that the project will be located in Dubai International Financial Centre and Dubai Mall.

The first phase of work will start soon.

First announced in 2025, Elon Musk will collaborate with the Dubai Government and the RTA to develop the “Dubai Loop” in the city’s most densely populated areas.

The project will initially be 17km long, have 11 stations and the capacity for up to 20,000 passengers per hour. The system will eventually expand to include multiple loops, but no information has been announced regarding where and when the expansion will be.

It will also feature direct travel to the destination station with no stops and be capable of reaching speeds of up to 160km/h.

In a statement on the Boring Company website, the project aims to eventually be capable of handling more than 100,000 passengers per hour.

What you need to know about Dubai Loop

The Tesla and Boring Company CEO announced the project via satellite during a panel discussion at the 2025 World Governments Summit in Dubai.

He said: “I think once people try it out, they’ll be like wow this is really cool. It’ll seem so obvious in retrospect but until you actually do it you don’t know.

“It’s going to be great. It’s going to be like a wormhole and you’ll just wormhole from one part of the city and, boom, you’re at another part of the city. It’s great. I’m looking forward to this partnership.”

The Dubai Loop could be the solution that many are hoping for to solve busy rush hour traffic and allow people to get from A to B easily.

Tunnels involved in the Dubai Loop will target congested areas of the city and aim to alleviate city traffic, but the announcement.

Elon Musk’s Boring Company has previously constructed an underground tunnel near the Las Vegas Construction Centre.

The Boring Company specialises in creating safe, fast-to-dig and low-cost underground transportation tunnels.

The Las Vegas loop is an all-electric, zero-emissions underground transport system which transports passengers directly to their final destination, similar to what has been announced for Dubai.

Since 2021, the Nevada-based loop has transported more than 2 million passengers.

The billionaire believes that tunnels are a year-round option for travel as they aren’t as severely impacted by weather conditions.
