The first trailer for the upcoming Minecraft film, titled A Minecraft Movie, arrived last week, giving us a first look at Jason Momoa in a wig chewing lots of scenery. The reactions have been quite mixed—it truly is a baffling creation, and you can't really tell if this movie is going to be a light entertainment classic or a Borderlands-scale disaster.

One man watching on from the sidelines with amusement and interest is Markus "Notch" Persson, the creator of Minecraft. Notch first released Minecraft in 2009, and oversaw its early years of development before, in 2014, selling the game and Mojang Studios to Microsoft in a deal worth $2.5 billion.

"Ok I'm in," says Notch of the trailer. "Wow this is a weird feeling." The programmer went on to call it "pretty surreal" seeing his old project becoming a Hollywood movie, and thinks it's "very cool they got Jack Black."

As for the trailer itself: "For a movie about a game with literally zero plot, it looks surprisingly fun," says Notch. "I laughed... I think twice. Yes, the sheep got me." One user opines that it just looks like an advert for the game starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa. "Well duh," replies Notch.

"I'm all for the spectacle" says Notch, discussing his feelings on Minecraft becoming a movie. "I probably would've even agreed to Uwe Boll making it. I don't have the same relationship to the game as the players do, for me it's more about seeing new weird takes on ideas that sometimes were just spur-of-the-moment things (like the creeper!)"

Speaking of the creeper, the furry style of it in the movie has not gone down well with some. But Notch says he's "Sort of used to it because of the plushies, so it works. In my original headcanon, they have more like a pile-of-leaf-like texture. Rustling, you know. But like I said, the plushies kinda rewired my brain, so furry's fine."

Reactions to the trailer have not been universally positive, shall we say, and Minecraft fan Kieran tells Notch "it looks absolutely horrible and nothing like the game you created." Notch says "that's kinda why I'm into it. But I get it's probably different for people who played the game instead of making it."

There are a few complaints about how the trailer and Jack Black represent Steve. "That just makes it funnier to me," says Notch, "but I have a different perspective than the people who actually played Minecraft instead of just worked on it." Oddly enough, someone asks if Jack Black was any kind of inspiration for Steve: "No, it was mostly inspired by a Quake 1 skin," says Notch. "No idea why."

The internet being the internet, soon enough someone stomps in to decry the characters as some "serious woke bullshit." Notch says he doesn't care what direction new characters go in: "Save that for when they're pushing it on existing lore. Who cares what the makeup is in a new story." Elsewhere he adds "I'm hoping for a lot of Jack Black over-acting. The plot can be whatever really, since I never really got to have that personal experience of playing the game."

Finally, Joey asks the question all Minecrafters want answered: "Okay, but do you think Herobrine's gonna show up in the post credits scene to kick off the MCU??"

"Haha," says Notch, "oh wow." Someone else speculates in the replies that the ultimate Easter egg would be a Notch cameo as Herobrine. Alas: "no guest appearance," says the man himself.

"Other than it being based on work I did ten years ago, I'm not connected to [the film] in any way," says Notch. "And, to me personally, that's fun, in a sort of trippy nostalgia way. Also I was expecting way worse."

Words to live by. Notch is currently working on a game called Levers and Chests, which doesn't have a release date. "I'll try to get something out as it's fun (or at least interesting) to play," says Notch. The Minecraft movie is due to release on 4 April, 2025.

‘No One Saw That Coming’: Hollywood Press Shocked by Melania Trump’s Box Office Performance

  • Melania Trump's documentary "Melania" has exceeded box office expectations, projected to earn $8.1 million during its opening weekend.

Melania Trump, America’s next big movie star?

That’s a bit of stretch, but the First Lady has stunned the Hollywood press with the better-than-expected debut of her new documentary, aptly dubbed Melania. The top entertainment trades are projecting Melania will pull in $8.1 million during its opening weekend — outperforming what the box office experts predicted and overcoming some absolutely brutal reviews from critics.

Here is what The Hollywood Reporter said about the $8.1 million haul:

If that sunny forecast holds, the film will come in No. 3 behind fellow newcomers Send Help and Iron Lung after icing out Jason Statham’s new action pic, Shelter. No one saw that coming, with many suggesting Melania was a bomb before it even opened based on empty, or nearly empty, seat maps in cinemas across the country.

THR said the flick is “galvanizing conservatives” in the south, “specifically older females over the age of 55, who made up 72 percent of the opening-day audience.” It added a “stunning 78 percent” of all ticket buyers were 55 and older.

Critics have been less enthusiastic, with Rotten Tomatoes showing it has an 11% approval rating from professional movie-watchers.

But Deadline reported Melania viewers are giving it rave reviews — which could spur more fans of President Donald Trump to go watch his wife’s movie.

“The exit scores are quite royal with an A CinemaScore, 5 stars on Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak, and get this — an 89% definite recommend; unheard for any movie,” Deadline reported. If a movie is in the 70 percentile range, that’s outstanding.”

The report added, “While a figure like that indicates a stampede for a tentpole, it’s interesting to see whether this documentary can overperform even more than it already is, especially off its older crowd.”

Variety also reported that the $8.1 million at the box office is a “significant uptick from initial projections of $3 million to $5 million.”

And moving to the East Coast, The New York Times reported Melania was heading towards “the best start for a documentary (excluding concert films) in 14 years.”

The documentary — which chronicles Melania Trump in the 20 days leading up to Election Day in 2024 — was directed by Rush Hour’s Brett Ratner and acquired by Amazon, which paid $40 million for it and spent another $35 million to market it.

Considering the big budget, don’t hold your breath waiting for Melania II to be greenlit, despite the strong opening this weekend.

Ricky Gervais Reminds Celebrities Not to Make Political Speeches After Grammys Sees Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish Slam ICE: ‘They’re Still Not Listening’

  • Comedian Ricky Gervais criticized Grammy winners for delivering politically-charged speeches, referencing his 2020 Golden Globes monologue advising against using awards as political platforms.

Ricky Gervais appeared to laugh at this year’s crop of Grammy winners for their politically-charged speeches, taking to X after the 2026 ceremony to share an excerpt from his 2020 Golden Globes monologue in which he told the actors in the room not to turn their acceptance speeches into political calls to action. Gervias used a crying emoji after the Grammys and wrote: “They’re still not listening.”

“If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a political platform to make a political speech,” Gervais advised in 2020. “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”

Gervais posted and then took down the same exact message last September after the 2025 Emmys. At that ceremony, “Hacks” star Hannah Einbender notably won for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series and used her acceptance speech to say “fuck ICE” and “free Palestine.”

The 2026 Grammys were largely defined by politically-charged speeches. Billie Eilish, Justin and Hailey Beiber, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Jack Antonoff and more musicians wore “ICE Out” pins to the ceremony. Eilish won song of the year for “Wildflower” and said “fuck ICE” during her speech, adding: “No one is illegal on stolen land. And, yeah, it’s just really hard to know what to say and what to do right now, and I feel really hopeful in this room, and I feel like we just need to keep fighting and speaking up and protesting, and our voices really do matter, and the people matter.”

Bad Bunny, who won album of the year and best música urbana album during the live Grammys telecast, said “ICE out!” during his speech and added: “We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens. We are humans and we are Americans…. hate gets more powerful with more hate. The only thing that is more powerful than hate is love. So please, we need to be different. If we fight, we have to do it with love.”

Even some winners who did not necessarily call out ICE directly still championed immigrants during their politically-minded acceptance speeches. Olivia Dean won best new artist and said: “I want to say I’m up here as a granddaughter of an immigrant. I wouldn’t be here… I’m a product of bravery, and I think those people deserve to be celebrated. We are nothing without each other.”

Shaboozey won his first Grammy award by taking home the prize for best country duo/group performance (“Amen” with Jelly Roll) and said in his speech: “Immigrants built this country, literally. So this is for them, for all children of immigrants. This is also for those who came to this country in search of a better opportunity to be part of a nation that promised freedom for all and equal opportunity to everyone willing to work for it. Thank you for bringing your culture, your music, your stories and your traditions here. You give America color. I love y’all so much.”

Jelly Roll showed off his dramatic weight loss alongside wife Bunnie Xo at the Pre-Grammy Gala ahead of the 2026 Grammy Awards.

On Saturday, Jan. 31, the 41-year-old country star — who once weighed 550 lbs. — looked nearly unrecognizable as he walked the red carpet arm-in-arm with the Dumb Blonde Podcast host, with whom he shares kids Bailee Ann, 17, and Noah Buddy, 9.

Jelly — now down to approximately 265 lbs., as he told Men’s Health — sported an all-black textured suit, while his wife, 46, made a statement in a skintight metallic latex dress. The pair shared a few smooches as the cameras captured their sweet romance.

As for how the couple got ready for the big night? Jelly — whose real name is Jason DeFord — exclusively told PEOPLE that his wife required a bit of help getting the latex dress onto her body.

“This outfit right here involved lubrication, which was actually a lot of fun,” he said, prompting Bunnie to chime in, “I had to literally use lube to get into this outfit.”

While some might consider it a wardrobe mishap, Jelly — who is up for three Grammy Awards this year, including Best Contemporary Country Album for Beautifully Broken — seemed to fully enjoy the process.

“Listen, as a husband, man, 10 out of 10 experience,” he quipped before gesturing toward his wife’s figure. “You get your wife one of these right here.”

When Bunnie playfully accused her husband of having a “latex fetish,” the country star responded, “I mean, that's one of those things. You could shine this thing up like an automobile.”

“You can hit with that one of them old redneck moves,” he continued, mimicking the act of blowing on her dress and wiping it off to make it squeaky clean. “You know what I'm saying? You could polish the paint off that thing. I might not take this off of her tonight. I might polish it off.”

With a laugh, Bunnie then joked, “He's going to turn me into a slip and slide later.”

Beyond the behind-the-scenes work that went into putting on Bunnie’s showstopping dress, Jelly has been public about his dedication to improving his health since he started losing weight in 2022.

“I’ve been fat my whole life,” he said on The Bobby Bones Show at the time, noting that his mother had given him the nickname Jelly Roll as a child. “She started calling me Jelly Roll when I was young, and I spent the next 20 years trying to grow into the name.”

While the musician previously emphasized that he became successful in spite of his weight, rather than because of it, Jelly told PEOPLE in 2024 that his weight loss journey has drastically changed his lifestyle and rituals on tour.

“It’s cool because there was once a time in life that the culture I built on tour was the opposite,” he explained at the time, estimating that he’d lost between 60 to 70 lbs. during his Beautifully Broken tour. “It revolved around alcohol and drugs. And now our tour culture is around good eating and around exercising and doing emotional check-ins with our crew every day.”

Losing weight and overcoming his food addiction also brought Jelly benefits that he’d never even expected.
