Yuusuke Yasuda
New graduate hire
He is a member of the 2nd Technical Division, 2nd Technology Department CLAVIS Company.
Since joining the company, he has consistently worked as an FAE for 15 years. Currently, as a department manager, he manages a team responsible for major US semiconductor manufacturers and venture companies, while also personally handling a wide range of tasks, including sales promotion activities for cutting-edge products and technical QA responses to existing customers.
Q1: What prompted you to join the company?
A unique, vibrant, "on-the-go" tech job
-
Yasuda
I heard that when you were a university student, you studied a field completely different from semiconductors, so could you tell me why you decided to join Macnica?
-
Wakita
I majored in chemistry at university. Most of my careers were in research and development or production management, but I felt that most of these positions involved being confined to factories or pipelines, and that there were few opportunities to interact with people. I was job hunting for a position that was both technical and involved interacting with customers, when I came across Macnica 's position as a field application engineer (FAE). I thought, "This is what I want to do!" and that's why I joined the company.
-
Komiyama
Macnica 's FAEs have a sales-like role, as they interact directly with customers on technical matters and visit customers together with sales staff to make product proposals.
-
Wakita
However, since the work involves collaborating not only with customers but also with internal team members, and requires deep technical knowledge, I believe that FAE is still a "technical job."
-
Yasuda
Why did you join Macnica?
-
Komiyama
When I first started job hunting, I wanted to work for a manufacturer, but when I learned about FAE work at a Macnica information session, I felt that a job that would allow me to come into contact with a variety of cutting-edge technologies and spread them would suit me better, rather than focusing on the same technology, so I became interested in Macnica.
-
Yasuda
Macnica does business with many overseas suppliers, so you have the opportunity to work with a wide range of technologies. What made you decide to join the company?
-
Komiyama
It's the people. Macnica 's employees are cheerful and lively, and I was attracted to their lively work ethic. I honestly thought, "I want to be like them!"
-
Wakita
"I totally understand! The senior employees I met during the selection process were 'sparkling.' Macnica employees are full of inner charm that comes from their confidence and pride as Macnica people."
-
Komiyama
Why did you join Macnica, Yasuda-san?
-
Komiyama
I had a frustrating experience during a homestay in high school when I couldn't speak English, so I decided that in the future I wanted to work globally and get into an environment where I could hone my language skills.
-
Wakita
It's true that most of Macnica 's suppliers are overseas manufacturers, and much of the communication and product documentation is in English, so I think the company is a perfect fit for the "global" theme.
Q2:業務のやりがい
Contributing to society without running away
-
Yasuda
What do you think is the most rewarding part of being an FAE at Macnica?
-
Wakita
I think this is where we can be of direct help to our customers. The semiconductor products that Macnica offers cannot be successfully designed and developed simply by delivering them, so we have to respond to a huge number of inquiries. When we provide appropriate technical information and our customers' design and development progresses, I feel a sense of accomplishment as an engineer.
-
Komiyama
I feel the same way. Dealing with bugs is particularly difficult, but when I receive words of gratitude after solving a problem, it makes me feel truly rewarded as an engineer.
-
Yasuda
That's something only FAE can do. I believe that dealing with defects is an opportunity to win trust. It's a highly urgent matter, and we need to respond quickly and carefully, but if we respond sincerely, our customers will recognize Macnica as a true partner.
-
Wakita
This is exactly Macnica 's core value: "Turn a crisis into an opportunity"!
-
Komiyama
One of the great things about Macnica is that we have many colleagues who are willing to help us overcome difficult times. A few years ago, when we had a major problem, we had a conference call with a customer that went on until late at night to resolve the issue. I was physically and mentally exhausted, but my boss at the time rushed over from a business trip and supported me until the problem was resolved.
-
Wakita
Macnica is a company where superiors don't run away. Seeing that, we have also developed a mindset of not running away.
-
Komiyama
That's absolutely true. I also feel rewarded when my proposal resonates with the client and they decide to adopt it!
-
Yasuda
It's really nice to be able to team up with sales to visit customers and propose products that meet their needs.
-
Wakita
Once the product is adopted, we need to provide long-term technical support until the customer starts mass production of the equipment, but the joy we feel when the equipment is successfully released onto the market is hard to put into words! It truly gives us a sense of having contributed to society.
Q3:今後の展望
Don't be satisfied with the status quo, change starts with the team
-
Komiyama
FAEs are required to have good communication skills, but it's also important to have an attitude of "sharpening your technical skills."
-
Yasuda
All of our employees work with pride, thinking, "I'm a specialist in this field!"
-
Wakita
My goal for the future is to become an expert like you all. I want to acquire technical skills that rival those of our customers and suppliers, and grow into an engineer who is valuable in the market.
-
Yasuda
That's great! Macnica is known as a technology trading company because of the high-quality technical support we engineers provide. I want to carry on what our senior employees have built and provide an even higher level of support to our customers.
-
Komiyama
Macnica 's semiconductor business is currently achieving remarkable results in both sales and profits, but when I heard my junior colleague say, "Just because we're selling well now doesn't mean we can continue like this," I felt a sense of responsibility.
-
Yasuda
Nothing new will come from maintaining the status quo. Even if things are good now, we don't know what the future holds. That's why it's important for each and every one of us to have the awareness to bring about change.
-
Komiyama
That's right. In that sense, is there anything you would like to change in the future?
-
Yasuda
Of course! Recently, Japanese manufacturers have been moving their manufacturing bases overseas to reduce manufacturing costs. If we continue to sell semiconductors alone, there will likely be cases where our manufacturing bases are unable to participate in overseas projects due to trade area restrictions.
-
Wakita
It's true that an increasing number of domestic manufacturers are outsourcing hardware development and manufacturing to overseas companies and trying to add value through software.
-
Yasuda
That's why the semiconductor division needs to further increase business models that earn support fees and sales of finished products and solutions. We want to bring about change in the semiconductor division, not just in departments specializing in launching new businesses, but also in building new businesses. Regardless of whether you're a junior, mid-career, or veteran employee, let's work together as a team and strive every day toward our lofty goals!
