For the Summer Games, athletes representing the ‘Republic of China’, at that time, first competed at the Games of the XVI Olympiad Melbourne 1956, taking part there in the sports or disciplines of athletics, basketball, boxing, shooting and weightlifting. At the Games of the XVII Olympiad Rome 1960 Chuan-Kwang Yang became the first athlete to win an Olympic medal of any colour, capturing silver in the men’s athletics decathlon event. At the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad Athens 2004 the first athletes representing Chinese Taipei to win Olympic gold medals did so on the same day, competing in the men’s taekwondo flyweight event and the women’s taekwondo flyweight event. For the Winter Games, athletes representing the ‘Republic of China’, at that time, first competed at the XI Olympic Winter Games Sapporo 1972, taking part there in the disciplines of alpine skiing and cross country skiing. No athlete representing Chinese Taipei has yet won an Olympic Winter Games medal of any colour.
At Beijing 2022, Chinese Taipei took part in Alpine skiing for the first time since Albertville 1992, as well as luge and speed skating. In Alpine skiing, Lee Wen-Yi finished 50th in women's slalom, while Ho Ping-Jui was unable to finish the men's slalom. In luge, Lin Sin-Rong finished 31st in women's singles, while speed skater Huang Yu-Ting contested three events with a best finish of 24th in the women's 1000m. Huang was the only Olympic veteran for Chinese Taipei in Beijing, having taken part at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games where her 20th-place finish in the women's 1000m remains Chinese Taipei's highest finish in any event at the Winter Games since figure skater David Liu finished 17th in men's singles at Albertville 1992.
