As part of a planned “National Shutdown” Friday to protest the Trump Administration’s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis and beyond, dozens of businesses in the South Sound, from Tacoma to Olympia, are taking part in one way or another.
“No work. No school. No shopping. Stop funding ice,” the organizers wrote on a website advertising the event. “The people of the Twin Cities have shown the way for the whole country – to stop ICE’s reign of terror, we need to SHUT IT DOWN.”
The uproar comes after the recent killings of Alex Pretti, Renee Good and Silverio Villegas González at the hands of federal agents in Minneapolis, as well as the fatal shooting of Keith Porter Jr. by an off-duty ICE agent in Los Angeles.
Anti-ICE protests are also taking place across the country throughout the weekend, including in Tacoma.
To support the strike, some local businesses are closing their doors for the day and some are donating profits to immigrant advocacy organizations. Many small restaurants, bars and shops voiced their solidarity with the movement but said they will remain open to provide income to their staffs and a gathering space for those who need it. Many in the latter group have encouraged customers to pay in cash to keep dollars spent circulating as locally as possible.
