First Fully Automated Indoor Farm in the U.S. in Hamilton, Ohio 🥕

@80acresfarms grows fruits and veggies vertically in an energy-efficient indoor environment that uses 97% less water and zero pesticides.

Produce grows three times faster in their climate controlled facility with yields up to 100 times larger on a tenth of the land normally required.

But that's not the only thing innovative about their story.

80 Acres is one of several companies choosing adaptive reuse of historic buildings over new construction in Hamilton, in an effort to not only transform food growing practices, but the city itself.

Adaptive reuse is a sustainable alternative to demolition. In addition to offsetting the environmental impacts of demolition or new construction, reusing these historic buildings allows elements of their appearance, design, cultural heritage and historic significance to be preserved.

You'll get to hear about adaptive reuse and more at the 2026 Riverway Summit on April 24, 2026 in Hamilton ! Save the date and get ready for early bird ticketing.

Riverway Rewind 🍔 A Taste Of History In Miamisburg

Listed by CNN travel as one of the 5 "classic" hamburger joints in the U.S., and Best of Dayton 2025 Winner for Best Hamburger - The Hamburger Wagon - is a Riverway staple that is worth the wait in line.

After the devastation of the 1913 Great Flood that engulfed communities along the Great Miami River, a tent city was created for refugees at the top of Mound Hill. Sherman “Cocky” Porter, a Miamisburg resident, volunteered to help provide food for the flood victims and relief workers. Utilizing a secret family recipe, Porter began serving up hot, tasty hamburgers to everyone in the camp for many days.

Eventually, the tent city closed and life in Miamisburg returned to normal. However, residents loved the little “Porter Burgers” so much that they continued to ask for them. It soon became a full time business, and has been a local favorite ever since.

Like many of the longest-serving burger joints in the country, Hamburger Wagon's menu is no-nonsense; either a single or double, served with pickle, onion, salt and pepper. "No stinkin' cheese or sloppy sauces!" is slapped right at the center of the menu.

** cash only!

Radioactive Wasteland to Nature Sanctuary: The Remediation of Fernald Preserve 🌳

For over three decades, Fernald was a highly classified processing site for 500 million pounds of high-grade uranium used in nuclear weapons. By 1989, the radioactive pollution had seeped into the groundwater, soil, surface water and air-- making Fernald one of the nation’s worst Superfund sites.

The comprehensive restoration of the site was completed (with the exception of groundwater) in 2006 at a cost of $4.4 billion. At the time, this was one of the largest environmental cleanup operations ever undertaken in U.S. history. This park is a reminder that nature can heal if we work with it.

This 1,050 acre nature preserve site now contains one of the largest human-made wetland and open water habitats in Ohio. It attracts a variety of wildlife, including over 260 species of birds. The site’s restored habitats include forests, a lengthy riparian corridor, and more than 200 acres of prairies. Portions of all of these habitats are accessible via a 7 mile network of trails.

Exhibits in the award-winning Fernald Preserve Visitors Center depict the diverse history of the site, telling the story of the land from the time of the Native Americans, through the arrival of settlers and farmers, to the uranium-processing years, and finally the environmental cleanup and legacy management period that continues today.

Plan your visit to Hamilton and Fernald Preserve by using the interactive map on our website.
