PRESS RELEASE
St. Mary Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Church is open to all people in accordance with church law. We want to state clearly that discrimination against any people is completely contrary to our Christian values and mission.
On Jan 11, 2026 we presented a Christmas Vertep, a religious pageant, as part of our exhibition of slavic folk tradition upheld internationally. We do not have any intention to promote harm or hatred with this pageant. However, we recognize some outside of our culture may assign elements of the performance to stereotypes when taken out of context which is inclusive of peoples historically present in eastern Europe.
We affirm that all characters are fictional and the event does not target any specific group. Thus, the church is reflecting on this matter seriously and is committed to engaging in dialogue, and teaching others about our heritage while ensuring that future events continue to uphold the dignity, respect, and safety of all people.
We sincerely appreciate those who brought their concerns forward!
