Memento Mori II

by
Released

Memento Mori II (MM2.WAD) is a 1996 megawad that contains 32 new levels, plus two top-secret levels that are not contained in the WAD file itself (see Accessing the top-secret levels). Released on July 27, 1996, it is the sequel to the 1995 megawad Memento Mori, with many of the same designers involved, including Denis and Thomas Möller of the Innocent Crew. Like its predecessor, and in contrast to most megawads, it is designed especially for cooperative multiplayer gameplay, although it can be played in single-player as well. It is also one of the few PWADs that are allowed to be used in Compet-N speedruns.

Out of all the fan-made megawads from the 90s, Memento Mori II is probably the best one I played. I got frustrated with some levels (usually struggling to find health or getting lost), but the level design was pretty good with the last five levels or so being very inspired and evocative. Base Exposure going forward is a great run of levels.

There are also some interesting quirks when it comes to the overall structure. The game is very sparse with rockets and cells for the first “episode” and then cells further on, making the burst of energy packs in the last act a cathartic change. This is the earliest example I can think of of a megawad trying to give Doom a different feel and flow.

The original music is splendid. Although the original textures looked odd compared to the regular Doom II graphics. That’s a minor complaint, though. Overall, I had a great time with this one!

While this is a marked improvement over its predecessor, it starts to show its predecessors tendencies near the back end of the wad. My favorite level has to be map 24, entitled "Io Lab." It felt like a level from "Doom The Way id Did" or "2002: A Doom Odyssey." It felt like a refresher after the confusion of previous levels. Onto better wads after this hopefully.
