White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt declined Monday to defend comments from top administration officials who described Minneapolis nurse Alex Pretti as a “terrorist” and “assassin” in the immediate aftermath of his shooting death by Customs and Border Protection agents. “I have not heard the president characterize Mr. Pretti in that way,” she told reporters at a press briefing. “However, I have heard the president say he wants to let the facts and investigation lead itself.” Shortly after the shooting, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem likened Mr. Pretti to a domestic terrorist and claimed he was “brandishing” a weapon with the intent to “massacre” federal agents. Stephen Miller, a top aide to the president, called Mr. Pretti a “would-be assassin” who “tried to murder federal law enforcement.” Many of the claims made by Secretary Noem and Mr. Miller — as well as those put out by Customs and Border Protection — have been contradicted by video evidence. Nevertheless, Ms. Leavitt said Secretary Noem still has the “utmost confidence and trust” of President Trump, and said his deployment of border czar Tom Homan to Minneapolis should not be seen as a sign of his dissatisfaction with how federal officials are handling operations in the city.
