Thoughts on boomer wargames? I've been learning the new flashpoint campaigns over the last couple of days.
I've been on and off with War in the East 2 as well, but the lack of simultaneous turns is really immersion breaking

I don't typically like wargames. They're actually puzzle games in disguise. Unless they have a random scenario generator.

I enjoyed WitE2, but it has a massive problem… the AI gets unlimited movement. This means that it will always be forming crazy unrealistic defense lines. You’ll get naval infantry units that were in Leningrad way down in the southern Steppes. That’s just a silly result, but the gameplay result is extremely frustrating. If you don’t encircle, during the AI turn the unit will magically teleport hundreds/thousand+ miles away. This happens en masse and it happens every single turn (does not apply to encircled/isolated units).

It’s a crutch for the AI, but these games are supposed to be about realism, detail, etc. kinda defeats the point of wrestling with all this shit if the AI is going to get cute like that.

There are fun hex and counters out there that don’t pretend to be hyper realistic. I enjoy the unity of command series (puzzle game comment valid here) and panzer general is always king.

The field of glory games are solid as well.

this. there's too much shit on the board, and every little piece of shit unit has 100 different statistics attached to it.
it takes just as much if not more brainpower to play chess, but chess doesn't clutter up the screen with a million numbers

To me it's honestly unbelievable that they thought it was OK to release and then not resolve the AI problem. If at least the Soviet AI can't win fairly with the same tools as a player, it is not ready to be played. I REALLY want to like WiTE2, and the effort put in and immersion is really something special, so it's so disappointing and basically unplayable for me that it can't behave realistically. I wonder if the scenarios are better than the main campaign because of their limited scope...
