Support For Abolishing ICE Surges Among Republicans

Support for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has surged among Republicans, according to a new poll from The Economist and YouGov.

In early January, 15 percent of Republicans were in support of abolishing ICE. Now, that number has jumped to 19 percent.

Why It Matters

Calls for the abolition of ICE have risen as clashes between immigration officers and the public continue, and backlash against ICE grows.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the subsidiary agency ICE were established under the Homeland Security Act in 2002, following 9/11, and the agency was given powers to detain people they suspected were in the country illegally.

In the space of less than three weeks in Minnesota, both Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, and Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, have been shot dead by immigration agents in Minneapolis.

These killings have sparked widespread protests and condemnation. But it’s not just this that has sparked outrage over the immigration crackdown—32 people died in ICE custody in 2025, in what marks the agency’s deadliest year in two decades. There have also been wider concerns about ICE’s conduct, including over arrests without due process, arrests of children, and racial profiling.

What To Know

This most recent YouGov poll was taken on January 25, 2026. A total of 3,359 U.S. adults were surveyed.

It showed that 46 percent strongly or somewhat strongly support the abolition of ICE—34 and 12 percent respectively. Twelve percent of people responded that they were unsure, and 41 percent were opposed, with 10 percent somewhat opposing, and 31 percent strongly opposing.

Eight percent of Republicans strongly supported abolishing ICE, and 11 percent somewhat supported. 73 percent of Republicans were in opposition, with 13 percent somewhat opposing and 60 percent strongly opposing.

Support was strongest among Democrats, with 76 percent supporting abolishing ICE—62 percent supporting strongly, and 14 percent somewhat supporting.

This poll follows one taken between January 9 and January 12, shortly after the killing of Good. Support has surged among Republicans by four percentage points over a period of roughly two weeks.

Democratic Congressman Shri Thanedar of Michigan introduced the Abolish ICE Act earlier this month. His bill looks to dismantle ICE and calls for the termination of federal funding to ICE.

Attention is constantly on Minnesota in response to the killings, and as ICE continues its operation. State officials have continued to call for ICE to leave the state.

Numerous politicians have now voiced their support for the abolition of ICE.

What People Are Saying

Republican Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy: "The events in Minneapolis are incredibly disturbing. The credibility of ICE and DHS are at stake. There must be a full joint federal and state investigation. We can trust the American people with the truth."

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, in a post on X on January 24: "As tens of thousands across America protest the violence that ICE sows with impunity, federal agents shot and killed another person in Minneapolis today. ICE terrorizes our cities. ICE puts us all in danger. Abolish ICE."

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, in a post on X on January 24: "It's time to abolish Trump’s ICE."

What Happens Next?

In the wake of Pretti’s shooting, the odds of a government shutdown taking place have shot up as Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said his party will block a Department of Homeland Security funding package.

I would like to see DHS,ICE,CBP, reduced to a reasonable level that did not roam the streets looking for trouble.

We need the agencies force to be reduced and operated as if we are a peaceful nation instead of those agencies being used against us like we are at war.

trump has actually lost control of those agencies or we wouldn't be asking them to be disbanded.

They have become almost like a private vigilante group like the Wagner Group in russia and similar entities.

These American agencies funded by the trump state that use American military uniforms, and receive logistical support from the trump department of war look and act like a private army

Red states are financially distressed. In the last few months, their leadership has taken away healthcare for millions of Maga followers, they’ve taken away snap leaving millions of MAGA followers with Food insecurity. Because they’ve gotten rid of Medicaid rural red state hospitals are closing all over red State America. So many Republicans in red states have lost their jobs and the cost of groceries is skyrocketing.

Take a look at what’s going on in Minnesota because when Republicans in red states start to protest, this is what they have to look forward to.

Don't bother with the erroneously named 'PlainFacts'. He just makes up fake 'facts' and then goes silent when asked to prove them. Typical MAGA.

            He also pushes K K K ideology.

This was actually what initially drew me into commenting here - there is an active group of such commentary that at times quite effectively moves the conversation.

It seems almost silly but these comments matter more than we want to admit. The general takeway from a comment thread on a story - is often the way the story is collectively perceived, because that is how a lot of people get their information.

I appreciate the heads up to everyone - its exactly what we have to do when presented with distortion of truths that really do matter - like what is happening in MN for example.

Well said. At this point, given the video evidence compared to what is being claimed by the administration, anyone who dies not see that they are being lied to is being wilfully bl ind.

Here's some reality for you. The Democrats shut down the government to draw attention to the ACA subsidies that were expiring and Republicans refused to extend which caused a lot of people's insurance premiums to skyrocket. It worked spectacularly putting the blame squarely on Republicans where it belonged before people vote for the midterms. It lost Trump and Republicans ALL the Independents who were fooled again. So the insurance issue lost Trump a ton of voters. Now the out of control ICE troopers will cost him even more. He loves to claim things he does are the biggest ever. Well he's gonna get his wish with ASTOUNDING and record breaking losses in the midterms.

If the borders were open, then how come there were people waiting at the border? Are you sure you thought that through?

In this article, Illinois Governor Pritzker says “ It’s time to abolish Trump’s ICE”. // First off, let me say it’s quite probable the ICE officer who shot & killed Alex Pretti in Minneapolis would be at least found guilty of manslaughter or second degree murder if effectively investigated & prosecuted. // Now, what Pritzker never says is that blue Democrat Sanctuary City of Chicago has about 90 active street gangs & an estimated 747 sets. These gangbangers commit an estimated 60 % of murders in Chicago. I would argue we need less federal effort to deport illegal aliens & more federal effort to help effectively prosecute gangbangers in Chicago for various crimes.

He's a bot that won't respond to my post anyway. He was posting in other spots about how guilty Alex was so I've just been following it around.

It's bad enough that he acts like it was one shooter.

Trump was elected for his promise of border control as a top issue. It was #1 for me, and I imagine for others as well.

Biden let in a true surge of undocumented immigrants (not a non-existent "surge" like in this headline). Those individuals need to be dealt with. Trump promised deportations as part of that overall border control - it was unambiguous - aka crystal clear. How did all these voters think that would be accomplished?

I need to hear from Trump voters who were concerned about the border and voted for Trump on that issue, at least partially, whether in agreement with the current policy, and especially if not. I do not need input from anti-Trumpers - their stance is obvious.

Then you probably do not want to hear the truth if your picking and choosing who to listen to.

The video evidence is clear. He makes a weak attempt at helping pull a woman away from agents but they pull her away from him. He then starts filming them with his phone which angers the agents and they go after him. He puts his hands in the air but they throw him to the ground and start punching and kicking him. He isn’t resisting, he is trying to stop the blows. Then an agent sees his holstered (legal) weapon in his back. The agent grabs it and walks away and yells ‘gun’ as he does so and they all step back and start firing, pumping 5 rds into him initially. Even after he is lying motionless on the ground and everyone has backed away from him an agent pulls his weapon and fires five more rds into his lifeless body.

Then, just like the Good shooting, no one lifts a finger to even see if he is still alive. Instead they frantically search for a gun but don’t find one because it had already been taken form him before they shot him. You can see the panicked look on the agent’s faces and the cover up begins immediately with a staged photo of the gun and false claims that he was trying to shoot them with it. And the Response from the White House down is that he is a domestic terrorist and deserved what he got. The scene was not preserved and no statements were taken so despite DHS protocols, like the Good case, there will be no serious investigation. And maybe one incident can be explained away but after 3 times it’s a pattern.

How can even the MAGA base go along with disgusting, criminal behaviour by ICE & CBP? On a base level there is no difference in what is happening here than what Trump is threatening Iran over, killing protesters in the streets. After 32 yrs in the military I am sad to say that it makes me ashamed to call myself American.

The extravagant sign on bonus makes agents seem like mercenaries and they are acting accordingly.

Dems don't think media is biased? With the new poll, 81% of Republicans are against abolishing ICE, yet the headlines say R support for abolishment "surges."

Anyone think a headline reader with no critical thinking skills would be brainwashed?
