We’re happy to announce that data recovery is complete and we’re ready to move forward. Iwara.tv will be returning to service as soon as possible, but first – we need a break for the weekend.
What we recovered:
- Critical data: User data, video data and Wura balances
- Followers, playlists, comments, friends, and most everything else
- Likes data is recovered from 2023 forward. Older likes are not lost and will be recovered later.
What won’t be recovered:
- Image files and video thumbnails
Thumbnails will be regenerated later once we create the script needed to regenerate thumbs for previous uploads
Image post files are not expected to be recovered, but we may be able to get some of them back
Next steps:
- Setting up our test site with the recovered data to check everything
- Making development changes to prevent this from happening again
- Moving the primary website to our new hosting services
Later:
- New premium voucher codes for people who were affected by the downtime while having premium active. Exact details will be announced later.
- Additional changes will be announced when finalized.
Please continue to be patient with us. We believe data recovery had to take priority over bringing the website back online right away as a fresh start. That would have caused too much distress among our users, and created new issues if we tried to import critical user data back into the database later.

Great news! Please don’t self censor. Censorship is never the answer. Look at what happened to Brown Dust 2, loyal fans hated censorship and refused to accept it. Please find provider that is comfortable with all of your content without censoring anything. Thank you.

Hey! great news, is such a great site, I wouldn’t know what to do with you guys and all the creators so thank you for working so hard on this!
About moving forward, I actually visit other site (that isn’t as complete and doesn’t feature many Japanese creators) with questionable content and they didn’t delete content BUT they stopped using certain tags and you can only use tags that they provide, so while the content is there you won’t find it using best*****ty instead it will only have pig or knotted and the JK might have the tag “dubious” for example. Hope that helps, I bet they encountered similar problems and decided to sacrifice the tags instead

iwara is not that great. Uploaders face restrictions for posting a simple video. We viewers end up watching lower quality and limited to, in most cases, around 3mins. rule34video is much better.
The other problem with iwara is the Chinese communist-style censorship. You can’t comment or give feedback on an author’s work. The shitty moderator will only approve posts with simple, brain-dead comments like ‘good work’ or ‘awesome’. It’s like the iwara owners are dog-leashed, gimps of China. Unable to freely express oneself so they force this censorship on us.
I hope there is no censorship of any kind.

Congratulations on the recovery! Though, just one thing I would say is please, please don’t start censoring your content. I know it will be very hard, but please do everything you can to protect the creative freedoms of the content creators on this site, as well as all the users who enjoy viewing these works.
If you haven’t tired already, you can try contacting admins of various sites for advice like gelbooru, sankaku complex, ATF, exhentai, baraag, rplay live, pomf tv, and tons of other hentai-ish ones with low content moderation. I’m aware most of them don’t host videos, but you may be surprised by the advice and wisdom battled admins can share with you. Don’t give up, we are all in this together. Iwara has always been a wonderful place.

I had posted over 150 image sets in my short time on the site and I’m to assume they are all gone. That’s fine, I have them on Pixiv but in the inferior censored format. Also fine because I have them on a hard drive. All that said, I don’t know if I’ll ever bother uploading to Iwara again in the future since they seem so flimsy as a service provider. I know its not ENTIRELY their fault but its just honestly a chore to engage with this website….

at the risk of asking a stupid question, what was the original issue? was it intellectual property, was it adult content, was it too much bandwidth consumption for the host, or something else entirely?
Recently experienced the same thing with a hosting company, except they deleted the server accidentally and all the data was irrecoverable. I only had a 3-months-old backup tarball.
Now my server runs on my own hardware. I have filesystem (zfs) snapshots being sent to the backup drives periodically and other measures to prevent data loss. When you’ve experienced it once, you won’t want to experience it ever again.
Great news, rest as much as possible to get everything back in order.

I am very happy to hear that the recovery is happening. I had a feeling we might loose stuff, but it’s better than I thought it was.My next suggestion for hosting would be to host it on site, not to have it hosted for you. Get a Business class internet service provider and your own server machines. Then you wouldn’t have to worry about hosts dropping you, and if there is ever a problem with the servers, you can work on them yourself. Yes, that is time you would have to dedicate to the site, but at least you wouldn’t be at the whims of anyone else.This is meant for future site development. Not something to do right now, because this would be a large amount of funds to shell out just to get the site back up.
Happy to see progress! I’m sure it’s been quite a week. It could’ve been worse, server hosts have been known to just disappear with no hopes of recovery at all. With the limited resource you have I’m surprised a video site this big could service while being free and having no pronounced funds. LF to more soon.

Reading through some comments, it appears the community is growing impatient. I have to disagree. How often have rushed video games resulted in failure? There are three ways you can have something. You can have it fast, cheap, or quality. You can never have all three. Since everything I’ve seen seems to indicate Iwara is operating with a strict budget, it is safe to say cheap is a requirement. I would rather not see this site fail due to a rushed job. Please prioritize quality over speed.
As for the people continuously bugging the devs to go faster, please take a moment to consider the enormity of an undertaking this must be, and cut them some slack. They’re fighting to recover data from a hosting service that is all but actively antagonistic towards the site.
