Anyone who starts a fire is working for ICE whether they know it or not.
I think the people who started fires last time now work for ICE.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey: "I just saw a video of more than 6 masked agents pummeling one of our constituents and shooting him to death. How many more residents, how many more Americans need to die or get badly hurt for this operation to end?"

No, stop. We cannot win this way. It’ll only destroy us.
ALL MN PROTESTERS
Absolutely nothing could be worse for our cause than violence and rioting. It is what ICE and Trump obviously want. Do not burn down our own city to protest invaders; they do not care; they will enjoy it. Do not do it. Do not let your fellow protesters do it.
They cannot destroy our city and our neighborhoods, but we can. Don’t give them what they want.
There are people on the ground right now who are excited to escalate. I talked to them, one said “isn’t it great?”
They don’t care about ICE, the murder, our city. Do not let them control this situation. We are very close to the brink. Observe, protest. Don’t destroy.
1. Shoot people like dogs
2. Unrest
3. Martial law
The plan is that transparent. Don’t let them

Very bad situation right now. ICE is either trapped or refusing to leave. Black bloc morons absolutely chomping at the bit to burn the neighborhood down, just got attacked by three of them for having a camera out. “Can’t wait to burn it all down tonight”
Rapid responders still out there, tracking ICE. In spite of everything, even now. Heroes
There’s video now. Worst thing I’ve ever seen. The entire ICE contingent needs to be arrested
Sounds like another extremely bad situation in Minneapolis this morning.
Initial report is that two observers got into a shoving match with eight agents, one observer was wrestled to the ground, and then an ICE agent pulled out a sidearm and shot the man on the ground five times.
This is all EXTREMELY fluid right now. The situation is very bad, that much is clear. But this is all initial reporting from observers. There will likely be video, maybe a lot of it.
well to be clear there’s a lot of space between “confronting and antagonizing” and “escalating in a violent way”
I have so much video of me just yapping at them, I can’t help myself. it’s just important not to be like “oh we’re going to get you” because you might literally get shot
A thought, don't "confront ICE" or deliberately antagonize them you don't have to. There are enough shitheads in that organization that just being there, getting names, alerting neighbors and videotaping is all you need to do to get them to overreact.
(they might shoot you anyway but it’s good to not give them a reason)
No, the opsec thing is a real problem, as many in activist channels will tell you. It makes it harder to join, makes people irrationally fearful of things that aren’t increasing their risk, and is a huge obstacle in getting information out, since people are scared to share media or talk to journos.
This is (yet another) wrong hill to die on. People are using opsec either as a ritual to manage their fear and get themselves out there or an excuse hoping others won't look down on them for staying home. Either way, lecturing people on this is not helping anything
It also leads people to do things that greatly increase their risk because they wrongly believe it makes them safer (e.g., destroy recordings or even devices after a scary encounter with the feds).

This administration has also rendered hundreds of thousands of lawful immigrants unlawful by revoking various programs through which they entered. SCOTUS has allowed this, but most people recognize that this kind of retroactive punitive measure is wrong.

Most undocumented immigrants have jobs and pay taxes, and being unlawfully present in the country in itself is only a civil offense, not a criminal one. Regardless, ICE is just disappearing people based on skin color, including citizens and lawful residents.
I’ll be honest, I have not come out of this particularly angry about the MPD. They’re massively outgunned and the idea of a federal-local armed conflict is scary. They’re also very noticeably nowhere to be seen whenever ICE conducts any operation. The mutual contempt is palpable
I imagine this is souring an already not great perception of the Minneapolis PD amongst the populace? I understand they’re “outnumbered” but I can’t imagine living under this terror and having any respect for the local police who didn’t even try to protect its people.
I’m sure there’s no shortage of MAGA and ICE sympathizers in the department. But it’s also a little unclear what they could do. And they have noticeably turned a blind eye to rapid response and done absolutely nothing to help the feds that I’ve seen.
If you steal my neighbors in the night, I do not care if they have all their documentation in order
Genuine question: why are Americans obsessed with protecting illegal immigrants? I’m really confused as a Canadian.
Precisely! There are many, many, many families needing food delivery right now. If anything the people doing logistics for this are more heroic because they’re turning in massive amounts of anonymous labor for zero public recognition
They have Palantir and the other AI machines. If you're doing rapid response, they know who you are (and where you live) pretty much immediately. It's just a fact of life. If that's not a risk you can take on, get out of the way of the people who *can* and do other non-response things to help.

I think the NYT took a decided right-wing turn some time during the easing of COVID restrictions and the impulse towards false balance or "both sides" journalism doesn't alone adequately explain the editorial bias we've seen since.
WHAT KEEPS YOU SAFE AS AN ACTIVIST, PROTESTER, OR OBSERVER
Not breaking any major laws
Not escalating tense situations
Not carrying weapons
Situational awareness
Recording and documenting everything
Carrying ID and emergency contacts
WHAT DOES NOT KEEP YOU SAFE
Keeping your identity secret
That’s not to say you need to wear a name tag or anything, but basically any major action you take to guard your identity is going to make you less safe along another dimension and probably make organizing harder too. It should be the LOWEST safety priority, not the highest

My youngest attends a Spanish immersion daycare. All of the staff are citizens but are scared to go out. We the parents organized grocery trips and rides to and from the center for them so they won't be alone.
Guys, ICE is attacking and harassing ANYONE WHO IS NOT WHITE, HAS A FOREIGN-SOUNDING NAME, OR HAS AN ACCENT. When they jump out and grab you, and carry you off screaming, it doesn’t matter if you’re a citizen or not! They’re not asking! I’ve seen it happen multiple times with my own eyes.
Does that mean these schools were upwards of 70% composed of undocumented families?
There are VERY FEW undocumented people in Minnesota. A much lower rate than in a lot of the country. They’re not here for undocumented people, they’re here to terrorize the broader population, especially any minority.
I know many full US citizens who are afraid to leave their homes, because they are (or look) Asian or black or Latino
Read the caption and understand what is happening here in Minnesota.
Our local schools are empty, many are at 50% or 70% absenteeism, it’s like COVID except with zero resources to support families or students. Because the federal government keeps specifically targeting them with terror tactics.
This is why we have patrols and watches and rapid response. Because cars that look like this, full of men who look like this, are slowly circling our schools, hospitals, and businesses. Idling in our alleys. At any moment they could jump out, heavily armed, and they do.
They don’t even like Trump’s policies in theory! When a Trump policy polls at 52% - his all-time ceiling for any proposal, more or less - it’s treated as a sweeping popular mandate. But when something polls at 40 or 20 or even 10%, or a Dem proposal polls at 65%, it’s all “well, we can’t be sure.”
Not hard to parse at all. People like Trump's policies ***in theory,*** but not in practice! Why does the NY Times insist on misreading things?
Thus if Trump gets 45% support for anything he wins, and if we get 65% support, well, that’s marginal, that’s 50/50, it could go either way, really.
That’s basically why they’re so fixated on Trump’s base “still supporting Trump.” They see that 35% of Real Americans as what matters and our job as to somehow convince them. The other 65% doesn’t matter and efforts to galvanize this large majority of the population against Trump as pointless.
The share of Americans who disapprove of ICE tactics in polls: 60+ percent
New York Times: “it’s really too complicated to say whether Americans approve of ICE killing Renee Good or not”
I think that’s because the Times sees its role in society as smugly lecturing liberals about why the right is correct and/or going to win, in the eternal liberal game of trying to feel smarter and more in touch with “real people” than the next liberal, of which it is the all-time world champion.
Oh, one last little thing - you have to love how they’ve placed all their stories about ICE beating up civilians and killing people and abducting children under the headline “Unrest in Minnesota.” From the bottom of my heart, this paper can burn in hell.
One thing that might get a little overlooked here is how important it is that DHS is massively exaggerating arrest totals (10k??). What people on the ground know is that immigration enforcement is barely occurring, and ICE/DHS are really conducting a terror campaign in the guise of enforcement.
Tomorrow's front page of the Minnesota Star Tribune: Jan. 24, 2026
Now obviously I’m not in favor of immigration arrests generally.
But the right’s narrative here is that ICE is here doing immigration stuff, and the Minnesotans keep getting in the way. But you see ICE CONSTANTLY, and abductions much more rarely.
Mostly what they’re doing is running around in various degrees of secrecy and militarization, lurking in alleys (literally, this happens a lot, we run them out of alleys every day), watching people.

I think some of you just don’t really understand what the feds are worried about. They can win a guerrilla war with 100 diehard revolutionaries in an afternoon. There is not one thing they can do about 50k marchers and 15k rapid responders
There are more of us than there are of them. Our goal is to make that more true every single day
at the very least if a death squad is at some point out for protesters, who was or wasn't a protester becomes pretty immaterial
You are not going to be killed by a death squad. You face two primary risks: physical safety in volatile situations, which you minimize by deescalating and knowing boundaries, and prosecution, which you minimize by following the law and documenting your actions. Neither risk is zero.
You absolutely do not need to worry about being assassinated in a retaliatory hit for basically any kind of remotely legal activism where you’re doing something that tens of thousand of other people are doing. That’s like, the darkest doomer fantasy imaginable. It won’t happen!
Really? No worry at all?
Again, the real concern is that something goes wrong WHILE YOU’RE DOING THE ACTIVISM, but anonymity and lack of cameras and guerrilla style tactics make that considerably MORE likely, not less.
It’s funny because my actual advice for anyone worried about opsec is “help get aid to home bound families,” because the easiest way to stay off the feds’ radar is simply not follow them, and not do anything they’ve argued is illegal. But weirdly the opsec guys also usually want to be in the action.
how about doing mutual aid runs wearing wigs and disguises in your own car?
You really can’t avoid this, unless you think that rapid responders need a fake license plate, burner phone, face mask, which means we’d have far too few to even do the job effectively. As someone said, your safety comes from DDoSing them: making the list so huge it’s useless.
ICE Agents have been photographing protesters and adding faces and names to a searchable database—so I think some steps to prevent them from doing so would be for the best.
Oh my favorite opsec discussion: the guy (always a guy) who advises you to not sign any list or bring your ID but also advises that you open carry on ICE patrol. Do not do this! This man is 180 degrees from the actual truth!
People keep talking about “risk profiles” but the reality is that many people worried about opsec are basically incapable of evaluating the risk of respective actions. “I can’t be photographed at a protest but I’ll tail federal officers with no phone or ID” - you have inverted the relative risk.
we really do need to have more open conversations about personal risk and opsec... different people in different situations have different risk profiles but broadly speaking I don't think most people need to maintain absolute anonymity at most protests
What I suspect is that the people who are extremely interested in opsec, and especially ones who are giving OTHER people instructions on it, tend to be people who are role playing guerrilla a little bit, and not understanding how easy they are to find and ID. Actual safety comes from boring stuff.
Having cameras present decreases your risk, but too many activists oppose it because they’re scared of being identified. Having your phone and ID decreases your risk. Recording everything decreases risk, but I’ve seen activists advise each other to destroy all recordings.
I mean, if EVERYBODY is on the list, what good is the list?
Opsec culture in activism legitimately needs to die
Real problem. People won’t talk to journalists, share important footage. Too much time spent obsessing over anonymity in situations where there’s no reason for it, or your identity is trivial to determine. People make it hard to get links to organizing channels like rapid response.
Is this a real problem or is this just a slap fight online?
Like Stancil is generally correct as to his arguments, but is there a real world effect to the rampant paranoia about getting on lists?
Yes, someone tasked with infiltrating our networks could literally do it in ten minutes, and they’re getting paid to do so. What all the cloak-and-dagger stuff is raise the barrier of entry for people who are hesitant or less motivated, definitionally not feds but the exact people we are recruiting.
it also undermines recruitment efforts while not actually filtering out bad actors. Everyone has to be "vetted" where vetted means knows someone who knows someone that the group organizer is friends with. Just hugely counterproductive.
Yes, frankly, if you’re a noncitizen you should be extremely careful about following or responding to ICE. We’re here to protect you and you should protect yourself.
With the caveat that it’s unfortunately a little real for non-citizens, yes. It’s idiotic spy LARP, cult of the operator shit for people who want to gatekeep mass politics.
ICE agent asked why he's taking pictures of a legal observer's car, replies: "Cuz we have a nice little database and now you're considered a domestic terrorist. So have fun with that."

this is a stupid tactic used by stupid people who don't have any other ideas
ICE agent asked why he's taking pictures of a legal observer's car, replies: "Cuz we have a nice little database and now you're considered a domestic terrorist. So have fun with that."
I understand why people dislike cops. But it's very important to recognize that ICE and DHS are not conducting themselves as cops. They are conducting themselves, at various moments, as an omnipresent secret police, and as a completely unaccountable invading army. Totally separate from policing.
ICE is not law enforcement, they are not police, they are paramilitary. Opposing ICE is not against law enforcement, it is not against police, it is against paramilitary.
If you think ICE in Minneapolis are cops, you haven't seen ICE in Minneapolis. There's a reason the observers completely ignore police right now.
A lot of people who aren't in Minneapolis have a lot of opinions about how MPD is just like ICE.
I was here for George Floyd. Imagine 4 MPDs from that era, at twice their maximum level of aggression, with even more weapons, operating in secret, all over the city, nonstop, and you're close.
I'm really torn on sharing this because I want people to know that I'm literally one of thousands of people doing the same thing, I'm not the face of it, but someone wrote a protest song for Minneapolis and it's genuinely catchy and I want to respect their work too
Modern protest folk was my genre of choice as a teenager and young adult and being referenced in a song like that is like, the greatest honor I could conceive
You do not want to screw this up. Trust me on this. I speak from experience.

This something I want people to understand. If you don’t get their names, they’re just gone. There’s no arrest record and the snatch-and-grabs can last seconds. People simply disappear and we can’t find out who they are or what happened to them.

Opsec culture actively hurts us by limiting how many people can join our networks. It makes it harder to get neighbors in and makes them fearful of joining. Since our greatest security comes from sheer weight of numbers this actually makes us less safe.
An open movement, that’s huge and universal, will be more effective than a closed movement that is tiny and paranoid. If we let a fed spy into rapid response, who cares? For every one of them we get 300 neighbors. All they can do is listen as we swarm them.
Another day, another outrage; ICE under Trump is going to deport dozens of people to Iran, including two gay men previously arrested by the regime who face the death penalty for their orientation, and despite the ongoing crackdowns which have killed thousands.
