Excessive torque steer

I recently bought a 2012 Sorento v6 sx model. I have the pull to the right problem which on a long trip becomes tiring holding the car straight. More of a problem is the torque steer when taking off at half throttle or more, or if the engine kicks down to 1st or 2nd? the car violently pulls hard left to the point you better be holding on to the wheel and if you let off the accelerator it will dart back to the right probably from over correcting trying to keep it in one lane. Now I have driven many front wheel drive cars and none were ever this bad. I guess my question is, anyone else having this issue?

Thanks,

Larry

yes my 276 horsepower sorento has lots of torque steer also. especially when you are in first fighting it from going right and it shifts to second and it darts left, then it winds in second and start pulling right again. thats what we get with the big power we have. kia should try to stop this excess pull or you could not push so hard on the gas pedal. sam

I have noticed it as well, but I find it no worse than many high powered front drive cars and better than some. True it is a little unexpected in a car this size with it's power output. I guess I just got used to it with front drive cars. Did you not notice it on the test drive?

My Two SOUL's are like night and day in this regard too. And the 2.0L Beta-II is not known for being a 3.5L V6 either over your base model 2.4L's. So yes the V6 plays into it but not like you think.

On the PLUS AUTO with 205/55-R16 89H on it it is less so but there.
On the SPORT LIMITED Stick with 225/45-R18 91V on it it is very noticeable.

So for this reason I tell you two things that make a world of difference in both car if so and not checked.

1)Tire pressure they should be on mine 33PSI and I run 34-35PSI always. But if as was the case with BOTH the dealer or the tire place that rotated them put them at 40-45 or more. I got both off the lot with 50-60. They will be bears (like on marbles) to drive and have plenty of torque steer till put to 33 (or 34-35) and tires are warm. The PLUS being less so and the SPORT being much more so.
2)TIRES and their assuming they all are "all season". And just plain one brand over another reality of not all "all seasons" are the same. Do not assume your last set is anything like this new set is now. The Plus has 16inch NEXEN CP662 on it and ARE 89H "all season". The SPORT has 18inch NEXEN CP662 on it too but 91V "all weather" (aka I found a fun way to mean to say "SUMMER mostly") ones. BIG difference in them COLD or under outside temp of 50 till warmed up if at all. The 89H and 91V below 40-50 degrees are NIGHT AND DAY handleing. The 89H's out run and runs circles around the 91V's. But once warm or over 60 degrees outide the 91V's runaway from the 89H's and put them in the weeds on off ramps. Nexen also makes the CP662 225/45-R18 in 95V which is clearly marked "SUMMER" too. They are only for FLA or islands where you will NEVER EVER drive below 65-70 degrees. As they would be a total MESS at 50 degrees like here. But they sell them to you.

Your 2012 Sorento SX will not be any different in basic thoery here on this. For proper and maintained PSI and tire temps cold to hot and how they preform. The player at that party is just different for you if you got 235/60-R18 NEXEN/KUHMO/CONTI/NITTO/BRIDGESTONE/GY on that SX outside from GA.

BTW Supan till these two cars I have always had for my daily driver and not daily driver RWD both in 2wd and 4x4 versions too. But drove FWD other peoples/familiy cars they had spiratically. The SOUL Plus was not bad to me as we got it 8/17/2010. It is not my daliy driver it is someone elses and they have had FWD. Then as winter came in SC I got the SPORT 11/12/2010. And it is my dailiy driver. And got a shock for sure. It was all over the place like I said above. I was not really happy at all untill I put this all together like I said here. But the Sport on a good day in May-Nov in SC kills the PLUS. So I live to the warmer weather and fun again. And put up with the Nov-Apr part of it all if it gets below 55 here on days. And make the most of the freak days we get Nov-Apr that go to 60 again!

Thank you for the informative link.

As a matter of fact I experienced the right pull when I test drove my SX before picking up from dealer. The sales guys asked me to get it aligned.
I am not experiencing it so much since I have got it. I thought I will give it some time and if it continues then I will get it aligned.

May be I will check the other things like tire pressure, also observe if it happens during acceleration and then go with the alignment..

Thanks for all the replies, I'll check the tire pressure, and have the alignment checked. However I owned a 2000 granprix v6 for many years and never experienced this condition that is so dramatic. I drove my neighbors 270hp Honda pilot and it is not near the beast this one is. I hate to pay 30+k for a new vehicle and have to sort this out. Hopefully the dealer can minimize this problem. Otherwise after 3k miles it seems to be a very nice car.

My new 2012 EX FWD has exactly your problem. I suspect alignment. All my tires are the same and inflated to exactly the same pressure. It was like this from the very first.

I thought all SX's were AWD? Hmm, just checked, I guess not. Please, nobody buy a V6 FWD, they suck, step up to the AWD.

You get torque steer when accelerating...not travelling at a constant speed. So, it can happen when at highway speed and you stomp on the gas. It's more pronounced the more you accelerate. Shouldn't be an issue at normal city speeds with moderate acceleration. You just have to remember it can happen and be ready for it.

Good answers here: Edmunds Answers - Torque steer

Great video on youtube of a FWD mini with a V8 in it here:

I believe that if you're getting right pull travelling at a constant speed, an alignment or overall check of tires, etc would be appropriate...but I'm not a mechanic :)

I had an issue w/ alignment causing a constant pull to the right (obviously more noticeable at higher speeds, but not due to acceleration), but other than that have not noticed any pull significant enough in my AWD to cause me to have to control the steering. That is to say that even with full acceleration from both a stop and at highway speeds I have not had to correct for any torque steer. (For reference, I am well aware of what torque steer is from previous vehicles. )
