Summary: Unrequited love is a horrible, horrible thing. Young Ishida has a crush and is determined to do something about it!
It was still very early when Ichigo entered the classroom, looking down on a frustrated Ishida and raising an eyebrow in question. “You know, they say that those who don’t eat breakfast have problems thinking in the morning but I never considered that I would actually see it in action.” The dark haired Quincy looked up from his place, crouched on the ground and pushed his glasses up with his left hand to get a better look at the orange haired boy. Ichigo noticed the rather frustrated and worried look on the boy’s face and had to do a double take before looking around and noticing they were the only ones in the classroom. “Is something wrong Ishida?” He questioned, voice now laced with a hint of concern.
Ishida scowled and looked down, hands moving about as he searched the floor. “It doesn’t concern you.” He continued this, crawling around on the floor and searching when some other students began to file into the classroom, chatting happily. As they entered he stood, brushing himself off and going to sit at his desk with a kind of depressed scowl on his face. Eventually the room was full of bustling students and Ichigo had forgotten all about Ishida’s momentary return to infancy. Class went on as normal right up until lunchtime when everyone was busy socializing. Ishida sat at his desk and ate his lunch with a sour pout, obviously whatever it was; it was affecting him a great deal. He was munching on some food when he overheard Orihime off to the side giggling with her friends. Normally this would have not caught his attention but when he heard her announce proudly “Look what I found yesterday!” he couldn’t help but turn to look, a slight hope that his worst fears might not be known.
Sure enough, held out in her tiny fingers was the singular silver band that he had been looking for all morning. He swallowed and his stomach lurched as she discussed with her friends why a ring might be lying in the classroom. Finally she pocketed it and the girls continued their lunch, never knowing of their audience. Ishida turned away from them quickly, hoping that nobody would see his interest in the ring. He didn’t need the rest of them to know about his personal life… he didn’t want them to know. It ashamed him that only two days after purchasing the ring he had lost it so carelessly, it had taken him months to save up the money and build up the courage to buy it. Then, on Monday, he had happened to pass by the object of his affections who was shopping with the little girl who lived with him and showing her the proper way to choose the best melon when he’d finally decided and marched over to the jeweler, guessing the size and spending more than twice the amount he paid in rent to buy the bit of silver.
After that he had carried the ring in his pocket, keeping it as a small consolation and trying to muster up the courage to give it to his intended. Yet every time he thought of the perfect way something in his mind reconsidered and he was back to worry and fear. Fear of rejection and of making a complete fool of himself. It wasn’t every day that someone confessed their love to another so completely unknown to them… the odds were slim that the other might return the feelings. Ishida had resigned himself to that long ago; however, it wasn’t feeling he wanted in return… he merely wanted the ring to be worn as a symbol that somebody loved them. Wasn’t that a beautiful notion? Couldn’t anyone understand?
“Ishida?” He stopped in the middle of his pensive moment by the teacher who was standing next to him with a concerned look. “You don’t usually forget to wear your uniform and you’ve been staring off into the distance for a while now. Is something wrong?” The boy looked down on himself, dressed in a pair of jeans and a minty green colored polo shirt, before giving a sigh and shaking his head. “All right… well just remember to wear it tomorrow.”
As lunch began to come to a close he turned his head slightly, looking over at Orihime who was getting out her notebooks. Looking back down at his own desk he packed up his lunch and then pulled out his books, taking a slip of paper and jotting down a note on it which he then reached out and placed on the girl’s desk. He didn’t care if anyone thought it odd… likely a rumor would begin that he was asking the girl out on a date but it didn’t matter as long as he got that ring back. She read the note and then looked up at him, giving a nod. Perfect. Soon enough the day ended and he waited outside the classroom for Orihime who broke away from her friends, telling them that she would catch up with them, and ran over to him. “Is there something the matter Ishida? You’ve been rather depressing today.” Her sweet voice came out matter-of-fact and Ishida fought not to roll his eyes.
Looking around he assured that there were few people around before bringing up the subject. “I understand you found a ring yesterday.” Orihime’s eyes widened and she nodded, reaching into her pocket and pulling out the silver band. Ishida looked at it with a mixture of dread and hope. Would she want to keep it since she found it left so carelessly? His eyes darted around again before he swallowed and looked at her, face firming into one of determination. “Could you please give it to me? I accidentally dropped it yesterday when class ended. It’s quite important to me.”
The girl blinked and then smiled, holding the ring out to him. “Of course! If I had known it was yours I would have given it to you this morning! You really should take better care of such things.” He nodded quickly, snatching the ring out of her fingers and then racing away from her. Orihime simply shrugged and walked away, going to find her friends. Wait until they heard who the ring belonged to. Wouldn’t they think it sweet?
He ran from the school, clutching the silver band in his hand until the knuckles were white, jumping from the crowded stairwell that led into the building and ignoring the whistles and applause from his peers as he dashed out into the street and ran along the sidewalk to his destination. Screeching to a halt he stopped, staring at the building and letting out heavy breaths. “Oi… what is wrong with you?” Jinta said as he and Ururu stood there, brooms in hand and staring at him. Ishida ignored them, walking past the children and entering the shop. It was now or never, he had to do this or he might risk losing it again. Quickly he stepped up to where Urahara sat, looking over some papers.
The shopkeeper looked up, eyes widening in surprise as he noticed who his visitor was. “Is there something I can do for you… ah… Ishida?” He asked, mind filling in the blanks as he considered what the boy’s name was. The young boy was still gasping for breath and flushed from his run so instead of speaking he merely bowed and held out his balled up fist before the blonde, eyes closing in both fear and anticipation. Urahara raised an eyebrow in confusion but reached up, holding his hand out to receive whatever it was and then staring in wonder as the silver band fell into his open palm. A smile crept onto the older man’s face and he laughed slightly before bringing the ring before his face. “Why Ishida, I never knew you cared~♥!”
Ishida cracked one eye open to see a smiling Urahara still sitting and he stood, turning to walk away when the man stopped him with the sound of his voice. “Aren’t you going to stay for a chat?” Closing his eyes and bringing his hand up to cover his racing heart the boy let out a deep breath before turning and giving a fragile smile to the man, walking over to sit next to him and slipping into quiet conversation.
