It’s fair to say most of us don’t think much about airport architecture when we travel. We’re too busy making sure our suitcases are checked before the counter closes, our liquids are out of our carry-ons at security, and we reach the gate before boarding ends.
But if your travels take you through San Francisco International Airport (SFO) this year, it’s worth pausing to look around. In early December 2025, Harvey Milk Terminal 1 was awarded the Prix Versailles for the “World’s Most Beautiful Airport.”
The jury in the annual art and architecture awards, presented at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, commended the terminal, calling it “the fruit of an ambitious transformation” that “provides a soothing, restorative setting for travelers."

It’s the latest in a series of accolades for Harvey Milk Terminal 1, the world’s first airport terminal named for an LGBTQ leader. The first phase opened in 2019, with the final section completed in June 2024. Over 51 million passengers fly through SFO annually.
“This recognition affirms our conviction that airports are the ultimate cultural gateways,” Ryan Fetters, Principal and Aviation Practice Area Leader at Gensler, the firm charged with the design of the terminal, said at the time of the announcement.
The jury pointed to Harvey Milk Terminal 1’s 79 percent reduction in carbon emissions and 59 percent decrease in energy usage, along with its bright, welcoming spaces, and celebration of Bay Area culture.
Among the features at Harvey Milk Terminal 1 is a permanent exhibition honoring civil rights leader Harvey Milk, as well as over 30 original artworks that reflect the city’s progressive legacy and creative spirit.

The terminal has also been imagined with wellbeing front and center, with naturally lit spaces, gender-neutral restrooms, wellness zones, and accessible wayfinding. As a "quiet terminal," digital displays are preferred to overhead announcements.
On the retail and culinary front, local and regional goods and produce are brought to the fore, including Bourbon Pub, serving up a menu of comfort-food favorites from celebrated chef Michael Mina.
“T1 is a living embodiment of Gensler’s commitment to sustainable design rooted in human experience, setting a vital precedent for how global infrastructure can truly connect communities while healing the planet,” added Fetters.
Other commended airports at the 2025 Prix Versailles included Marseille Provence Airport Terminal 1 in France for its interiors, and Portland International Airport Main Terminal in Oregon for its exteriors.

With the Trump administration recently expanding its travel ban to 39 countries and suspending visa processing for 75 in total, multiple countries have responded with travel and visa bans for Americans.
The African nations of Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali have all stopped issuing visas for Americans in what they describe as a reciprocal move, given the treatment of their citizens.
At the start of the month, Mali's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation put out a statement saying that U.S. citizens will now also be subject to "the same conditions and requirements as those imposed by the American authorities on Malian citizens entering the United States."
Pakistan cancels visa prior to arrival, requires travelers to apply for paid visas
Although the move is not immediately tied to the Trump administration's actions, Pakistan is, in turn, making it more difficult for Americans to visit by suspending its "visa prior to arrival" program, Visas News reported. The program allowed citizens of 125 countries to apply for permission to enter easily online.
From August 2024, citizens of countries like the United States, Canada and most European and Asian nations could apply for a 90-day tourist or business visa for free by submitting their passport information and trip details through a government portal.
Travelers looking to come to the country were the first to notice that the "Pak ID" mobile application now directs applicants to select a traditional visa category for which they have to pay $35 USD for a single entry of up to three months (the prior visa allowed for multiple entries) and will take up to seven business days to be processed.

Citizens of the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom have to pay a higher $60 fee for reasons not expanded upon. The Pakistani government has not released an official statement on the change or provided any information on whether the simplified application will ever be brought back.
In August 2024, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif classified "this easing of the visa regime [as a way to] help make Pakistan an attractive destination for investments and tourism."

Norwegian low-cost airline Norse Atlantic Airways recently received clearance to run flights to the Pakistani capital of Islamabad from the United Kingdom cities of London, Manchester, and Birmingham, Pakistan's The Express Tribune reported.
This marks one of the largest network expansions for a Western airline.

A sudden airline shutdown or bankruptcy can have reverberations that in some cases last for months, or even years.
After UK-based regional airlines Eastern Airways and Blue Channels both collapsed within a few weeks of each other in fall 2025, a community in Cornwall was left without flight access, and to avoid disrupting travel, had to use larger planes that ran mostly empty.
When Icelandic company Play Airlines fell in an abrupt bankruptcy, local tour operator Tango Travel also had to shut down in a domino effect, as many of the tour packages it sold relied on flights from the now-defunct airline.
Tailwind Air files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy two years after transitioning to charter flights
Based out of Westchester County (HPN) and Sikorsky Memorial (BDR) to connect multiple regions in the Northeast with Manhattan, Tailwind Air launched in 2014, but began operating in 2019 after receiving the necessary licenses. After struggling to turn a profit, it canceled all commercial flights and transitioned to a charter-only airline in 2024, Simple Flying reported.

At the time, the airline cited unprofitability and lack of demand as reasons for its shutdown. As first reported by the BankruptcyObserver watchdog, Tailwind Air has now filed for Chapter 11 protection in the Eastern District of Virginia bankruptcy court on January 15, 2026.
Plans to run charter flights also failed to materialize, and the carrier lost its AOC operating license in January 2025.
The filing reports company assets of less than $100,000 and liabilities of between $1 and $10 million owed to between 50 and 99 creditors. Kevin M. O'Donnell of Henry & O'Donnell law firm is representing Tailwind Air in the bankruptcy proceedings.

Why did Tailwind Air shut down in 2024 and file for bankruptcy now?
The airline has not released a statement on the bankruptcy proceedings. In 2025, CEO Alan Ram said the airline had been actively seeking investors and partners to restart potential seaplane operations from Boston, according to Simple Flying.

The airline had an extensive seaplane fleet of Cessna 208 Caravan, SOCATA TBM, and Dassault Falcon 900 aircraft, among others.
Each plane had fewer than 60 seats, while one-way prices ranged from $400 to $800 per ticket.
Its most flashy route went from New York to Boston, but it also tested services to cities such as Newport, Provincetown, and Nantucket that ultimately failed to bring in the traffic to make them financially viable.
These airlines filed for bankruptcy in 2025:
Spirit Airlines (Spirit Aviation Holdings, Inc.): Filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time on August 29,2025.
Ravn Alaska: Ceased operations in August 2025 after earlier Chapter 11 proceedings; shut down flights and folded into other operations such as New Pacific.
Corporate Air: Filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy (restructuring) in September 2025 as part of a planned sale, according to Bondoro.

Amtrak's Sunset Limited train going through the desert in Texas.
In terms of scenic landscapes, it doesn’t get more stunning than Amtrak’s Sunset Limited route, which runs from the bayous of Louisiana to the Pacific Ocean. The Sunset Limited, the railroad company’s southernmost route, traverses five states—Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.
The journey starts and ends in two great U.S. cities: New Orleans and Los Angeles. In between, travelers are granted views of vast desert landscapes and boggy bayous. During the high season, the train even has an onboard national park guide who shares information about the geology and history of the areas the train passes.
Here's what else you need to know before riding Amtrak's Sunset Limited route.
Amtrak Sunset Limited Route
The Sunset Limited runs in both directions between Louisiana and California three times a week. If you’re traveling east to west, the train departs New Orleans in the morning and arrives in Los Angeles two days later. Those traveling west to east will board in Los Angeles in the late evening and arrive in New Orleans two days later. And since the journey clocks in between 46 and 48 hours in duration, travelers are treated to overnight accommodations, full-service dining, and a true long-haul train experience.

The Big Easy sets the tone for the entire journey. Before boarding the train, travelers can meander down the shady streets of the Garden District or pay a visit to The National WWII Museum. The train takes off from the Union Passenger Terminal just south of the French Quarter, making it easy to enjoy a nightcap at a world-class jazz club before heading back to your hotel to prepare for the next day’s adventure. Ahead of boarding the Sunset Limited (it leaves New Orleans at 9 a.m.), grab a bag of beignets for the journey, and make sure to look out the window just before the train crosses the border into Texas. Otherwise, you’ll miss a peek at the Atchafalaya Delta nature preserve, located within America’s largest river swamp ecosystem.
Houston, Texas

Once the Sunset Limited passes into Texas, the sprawl of Houston looms on the horizon. Start your city getaway by stretching your legs on the green hills of Buffalo Bayou Park, where you can enjoy views of the Houston skyline. For a dose of art in nature, head to the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern, a former reservoir that now features art installations and performances.
The city’s creative side continues in the Theater and Museum Districts, which are home to venues like the Houston Grand Opera and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Around 30 minutes southeast by car is the Space Center Houston, a science museum and the visitor center of the renowned NASA Johnson Space Center.
Alpine, Texas

The train travels across the Lone Star State in the night, arriving in Alpine, Texas, the next morning. Alpine is just over two hours north of Big Bend National Park, a destination known for its sprawl of Chihuahuan Desert as well as the Santa Elena Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande and lined with limestone cliffs. If culture is what you have in mind, Alpine is also less than 30 minutes from the artist community of Marfa, Texas. Check out its otherworldly art installations and viewing platform for watching the Marfa lights phenomenon.

Another national park awaits once the Sunset Limited dips into California. Around an hour from Palm Springs lies Joshua Tree National Park, a desert landscape with rugged rock formations and its eponymous Joshua trees. But even if you don’t venture to the national park, you’ll find plenty to do in Palm Springs proper. The Californian desert destination is known for its stylish hotels and mid-century modern homes, plus it has rows upon rows of cute shops and boutiques. Golf and hot springs are plentiful, and the surrounding Coachella Valley has hiking and biking.

The Sunset Limited pulls into Los Angeles just after 5 a.m., right as the day is about to begin. Passengers disembark at Union Station, which is about a mile from the Grand Central Market and Grand Park. Further afield, travelers will find sights like the historic Santa Monica Pier, Disneyland, and the beaches of Malibu. The Getty is a must for anyone who appreciates art or architecture.
Sleeping and Seating

Coach is the most affordable and basic seating option on the Sunset Limited. It's available on the train’s upper and lower levels and has wide, reclining seats with dining trays and electrical outlets. There's also no middle seat in this class.
Those who want to be able to lie down horizontally during the 48-hour journey will want to book a Superliner Roomette, Superliner Bedroom, or Superliner Bedroom Suite. The Superliner Roomette has two seats that transition into beds and includes bedding, pillows, and towels. Travelers staying in a Roomette get complimentary meals, access to a dedicated first-class attendant, priority boarding, and admission to a lounge and shared bathroom.
The larger Superliner Bedroom has all the perks of a Roomette and also accommodates two people, but it’s twice as large; there’s a sofa and chair that transform into beds and an in-room sink, bathroom, and shower. The top-tier seat option on the Sunset Limited is the Superliner Bedroom Suite, which can accommodate up to four people. In addition to all the perks of the lower-tier rooms, the suites are made up of two adjoining rooms and feature two in-room sinks, bathrooms, and showers. The Sunset Limited also has Superliner Family and Accessible Bedrooms on board.
Dining
Amtrak

As part of their rate, travelers in any of the private cars (Superliner Roomettes, Bedrooms, and Suites) enjoy full-service meals in the dining car. Trains traveling west serve lunch and dinner on the first travel day and breakfast, lunch, and dinner the next. On the eastbound route, travelers are served breakfast, lunch, and dinner, followed by breakfast and lunch on their arrival day.

The dining car’s full-service meals include French toast and omelets for breakfast, salads and burgers for lunch, and three-course dinners. Dinner service includes one alcoholic beverage for of-age travelers. Meanwhile, the onboard cafe is available to all guests—including those in coach—and serves snacks, beverages, and basic meals all day long.
Best Time to Ride
Marty Katz/Amtrak

The best time to take the Sunset Limited between Louisiana and California is the spring or fall, when the weather is a bit cooler, but there is still a reasonable amount of daylight (for sightseeing from the train). This is also typically the best time to visit many of the national parks the train passes; summer can be hot and busy, but spring and fall are often a bit quieter and noticeably cooler.
Additional Perks
Amtrak

The most impressive perk on the Sunset Limited route is the onboard national park guide, who provides context to the journey’s many landscapes. In addition to this free history and geography lesson, the Sunset Limited has an observation car with floor-to-ceiling windows. Small dogs and cats (up to 20 pounds) can travel on the Sunset Limited for a small fee, and all passengers receive two free checked bags.
