BEAMS was founded in February 1976. The first store opened in Harajuku was a small 21.5-square-meter (231-square-foot) shop. Since then, we have developed the company, to change the custom and culture of Japan’s youth and to create bright and exciting social phenomena.
As a “Happy Life Solution Company,” our goal was to make everyone involved with BEAMS happy. And now, we have customers that have been fans of BEAMS for three generations who are now grandparents, parents, and children. It is our sincere hope to pass BEAMS on to the next generation.
BEAMS started as a specialty store; we have gradually expanded our range of offers. In the 1990s, we mainly introduced new styles in fashion that no one had seen before to the market in Japan. In the 2000s, we broadened our focus to the experience associated with styles in fashion. Since the 2010s, we have begun to develop businesses that start with “people”. Digitalization has drastically changed the nature of communication and the fashion business landscape. In this irreversible evolution, people seek the human touch. Therefore, the mission of BEAMS is not only to open stores just for shopping, but to create places where people enjoy coming or being there because they can share human passion and energy. We aim to provide such places both in digital and physical formats.
BEAMS uses its connoisseurship as a specialty store to find new value that does not yet exist in the market. We take pride in our curation and hospitality, through which we introduce Japanese craftsmanship and culture to the global market. We want to be a catalyst for the fusion of Japanese and global cultures to create new lifestyles. The era when mass trends dominated the market has shifted to an age where individuals pursue their own interest and taste. This is now transitioning further into an era of communities, where people who share the same values come together and form groups. Happiness occurs in communities where people feel connected to others. BEAMS aims to be a hub of “Happy Life Solution Communities,” a group of like-minded employees, friends, and fans to create bright and exciting social phenomena that transcends boundaries.
