BEAMS Induction Ceremony

On April 1, 2025, as cherry blossoms were announced to be blooming all over the country, BEAMS held its induction ceremony at Togo Shrine in Harajuku. 92 new employees, dressed in unique fashions, gathered at the venue.
What kind of induction ceremony gives you a glimpse of what makes BEAMS unique? We bring you an interview with some fresh new employees to bring you an induction ceremony brimming with enthusiasm for the future and expectations for BEAMS.

The induction ceremony was held at Togo Shrine. The new employees looked nervous throughout the ceremony.

The ceremony included a congratulatory speech from President Shitara and a speech from a representative of the new employees, and a warm round of applause was given to the 92 new employees as they took a big step into the world of work.

After the ceremony, a social gathering was held, where the new employees were divided into groups based on their departments and introduced themselves. Some groups introduced themselves with unique performances, creating a friendly atmosphere that was typical of BEAMS.

Interview with new recruits who shine with individuality and look to the future

The people we interviewed were Ono-san, who is honest about what he likes, and Matsubayashi-san, who is good at expressing himself through craftsmanship. These two fresh faces who just joined the company talked about their thoughts on BEAMS, their impressions of the induction ceremony, and their enthusiasm for the life they are about to embark on as working adults.

The first person is Mr. Ono from BEAMS Ebisu!

Q.Please tell us why you decided to join BEAMS.

A.Ever since I was in high school, I had always wanted to work in the fashion industry. By chance, senior employees of BEAMS were teaching at university, and I had the opportunity to hear about the atmosphere of the company and what they do at BEAMS. I visited the head office several times, and everyone I passed in the office had a happy aura about them. My first impression was that it would definitely be fun to work here.

On social media, I think that staff from other apparel brands often post about their outfits, but I get the impression that BEAMS staff are not just posting outfits, but rather their lifestyles. I was also attracted to the company culture that respects "individuality" and "likes," and decided to join the company.

Q.What was the atmosphere like at the induction ceremony?

A.I was nervous about going, but I was surprised by the happy atmosphere, which was even more than I had expected. At the social gathering after the induction ceremony, new employees introduced themselves to their senior colleagues at each assigned department. I was assigned to the same department as a girl who was good at singing, so we said, "Let's sing!" and quickly formed an impromptu band with the three of us. My senior played air piano and I played air guitar, and we sang Spitz's "Cherry" with all our hearts (laughs).
Some groups put on unique performances like ours, while others gave serious speeches. It was so interesting that I wondered, "Is this really an induction ceremony?"
Each of them has their own personality, not only in terms of their clothing, but also in their personalities, and while they have things in common, they also have their differences. Seeing the charms of each of my classmates has made me even more excited about my future life as a working adult.

The three members of BEAMS Ebisu perform an impromptu band on stage.

Q.What are your goals for the first year and your aspirations for the future?

A.The store I've been assigned to, "BEAMS Ebisu," is the one I frequented the most when I was a student. Now I'm happy to be working there. However, I don't have any experience working part-time in the apparel industry, so I'm honestly a bit nervous... For now, I'd like to rely on my seniors and absorb as much as I can in my first year, even though I'm nervous.

I think that being able to communicate my "likes" is what makes BEAMS unique, so I would like to eventually make the most of my "likes" and challenge myself not only in sales, but also in other things as well.

After the induction ceremony, all new recruits will undergo a nine-day training course.

The second person is Matsubayashi from BEAMS JAPAN Shibuya!

Q.What first got you interested in BEAMS?

A.I like fashion, but I'm more interested in art, photography, music, etc. Compared to other select shops, I got the impression that BEAMS especially coexists with those kinds of cultures.
When I was a student, the manager of the select shop where I had a part-time job had previously worked at BEAMS, and I was attracted to the coolness of the people who had worked there in the past, which is what made me want to work there myself.
Since the company is made up of people with a wide variety of interests, I'm sure I'll encounter new stimuli. If I find people who like the same things as me, I think I'll be able to work more happily. I have high expectations for this, so I'm looking forward to meeting new people in the future.

Q.What are your hobbies and favorite cultures?

A.Making hats is my hobby, and I've made about 130 to 150 hats so far. I once made 20 or 30 hats at once as costumes for my university dance club. I couldn't throw away my favorite old clothes, so I decided to remake them into hats that I had always liked. I'm always in my room with my sewing machine, so my mother worries, saying, "You're doing it again today!" (laughs).
Every time I heard President Shitara say, "Hard work cannot beat passion," I began to think that perhaps I have something that could be called "passion."

At the social gathering, Matsubayashi spoke about his enthusiasm for the future.

Q.How do you feel right now before you step into the store?

A.At my assigned BEAMS JAPAN Shibuya, 70% of the customers are from overseas. I've never attended an English conversation class or lived abroad, so communication is the thing I'm most worried about. But I like talking to people, so I'm looking forward to it. It's a good opportunity to improve my English, and I'm grateful that international communication will inevitably increase.

As for my ambitions, I want to be loved by my seniors (laughs). I like talking to older people, and I'm also very interested in the things my seniors like. I'm sure we'll find common topics to talk about, so first of all, I want to become someone that everyone will love!

MESSAGE

  • From the bright faces of the new employees and their words, we could see their expectations for the future and their desire to grow. From now on, as members of BEAMS, we hope that they will make use of what they love and hone their individuality as they move forward.
