Sayuri: no one can do that! Mameha: hold my sake.

Can we take a minute and say how cute the boy on the bike was
927
Man, imagine if someone tried this in the future and that boy was driving a car instead of riding a bike.

We sells our skills not our body.

Fun Fact: the liquid inside of that cast iron bowl is melted wax. Traditionally geisha's used wax to hold their hairstyle in place similar to modern day women using gel & hairspray

One of the most visually stunning movies I’ve ever seen

mameha: a geisha can stop a man in his tracks with a single look chiyo: causes a bike crash with a single look

Michelle Yeoh could be in burlap and she'd stop me dead in my tracks. Such elegance, poise, and intelligence.

cracks up so even in Japan women couldn’t escape the hot comb 🤣🤣🤣

I wish I could cause traffic jam by just being beautiful
231
The crazy thing is that the actresses are Chinese not Japanese.

They say pain is beauty. These women show that is true
349
I love that makeup box. Can we take moment to marvel at it's beauty?
32
I really like Mameha's folded/criss cross ponytail. Cute yet elegant!

The crazy thing about this is when I was younger I wanted to be a geisha so badly. I even used my mother's make up to try and look like gia

"Agony and beauty, for us, live side by side."

Loved the novel, and the film actually did pretty good. The boy on the bike was my favorite part of this scene.

Basically what I feel like during fashion week
29
I just love the drums at the beginning. They wanted to bring the feeling as of you're watching a sacrifice and it's true. Chiyo sacrificed everything, her soul, her dignity and her body to become a geisha.

Back when people had to go to different shops. Now we all go to Walmart. Ugh.

Even if she wasn't a geisha, still everyone would turn around and stare at her, as she is so beautiful.

Ziyi and Michelle are so beautiful.

one of these best internationally acclaimed movies i had no idea it was done in 2005 but the sentiment is still relevant today even in america with instagram models, and the stripper lifestyle. LOVED LOVED LOVED this movieeee!!!

Mameha is so beautiful!

Can we give our lovely composer a round of applause for this masterpiece? 😍

If this movie was released today it would’ve won so many awards

Damn, I forgot how much I loved the soundtrack of this movie.

Michelle ALWAYS stops me in my tracks!!

This film gets an A+ in terms of production value. I’m not an expert, but I think they did a great job making this film look period correct.

I remember wanting to watch this movie so bad but cuz i didn't know where to find it i looked up the book and made my parents buy it with the pretense of it being a book about a lil girl and her dreams lmao... I loved it so much that I got the movie by all means once i turned 18. Its one of my most treasured memories :))

John Williams did a good job on this score

0:17 In the novel it’s explained that the boiling liquid in the pot is hot melted wax, which the hairdresser dips the comb into and then quickly has to comb it into their hair before the wax has time to harden. Apparently it was exactly as painful as that sounds, and if the geisha accidentally ruined her hair while sleeping, she’d have to go through the entire process again the next day. At minimum they did this at least once a week when starting out as a maiko.

John Williams Soundtrack... My god 😍😍😍

My mom and I love this book, and we would talk about our favorite kimonos. The book describes them so beautifully. My mom's favorite was the kimono patterned like fresh spring leaves, and my favorite was the black one with orange sparks that formed scenes like waterfalls of embers.

Such a beautiful film

"CATEGORY IS..... "

LMAO! 🤣😂 The boy on the bike. I don't know who I feel sorry for more, him or the chickens. I do know if you upset chickens terribly they won't lay eggs for a while.

This is the only scene I remember from this movie

Confused she says they sell they’re gifts/skills not their body... but doesn’t she get sold to that old doctor man??
