Verona — An exterior construction elevator collapsed at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona Tuesday afternoon, injuring five people, according to a casino official.
Construction crews were removing the elevator Tuesday afternoon when it fell and injured the five people, said Joel Barkin, a spokesperson for Turning Stone.
Four of the five people who were hospitalized had been discharged by Thursday afternoon. The fifth person remained in stable condition at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, Joel Barkin, a spokesperson for the Oneida Indian Nation, told syracuse.com on Wednesday. Turning Stone is continuing to investigate what caused the collapse to occur, Barkin said.
At around 3:59 p.m., five ambulances responded to the casino at 5218 Patrick Road, according to the Oneida County 911 Center.
The hotel is part of a large expansion project at the casino. Company officials had said the hotel would open in June with 258 guest rooms and suites.
The expansion, which the Oneidas call Turning Stone Evolution, is the largest construction project at the resort since it opened in 1993. It was initially expected to be completed by 2027.
When the project is complete, the Turning Stone campus will have more than 1,000 rooms in four hotels and more than 225,000 square feet of events and meeting space. That will make it the “largest meetings and conventions resort destination” in the state, nation officials said.
