https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2026/01/16/trump-greenland-us-tariff-threat/88213651007/
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump, who called himself “the tariff king,” threatened to impose tariffs on other countries to pressure them into allowing the United States to annex Greenland.

Trump has insisted on controlling Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of Denmark, by arguing that it is vital for minerals and Arctic shipping lanes. But his proposal set off an international firestorm, with opposition from leaders in Denmark and Greenland, elsewhere in Europe and among bipartisan members of Congress.

Trump’s comments came at a health care event at the White House, where he trumpeted how the threat of tariffs forced other developed countries to accept higher drug prices so U.S. prices could come down.

“I may do that for Greenland, too,” Trump said Jan. 16. “I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland because we need Greenland for national security. I may do that.”

He didn’t elaborate on how much the tariffs would be or which countries he would impose them on. But tariffs he has already imposed led to a temporarily halt in trade with China and pressured other countries to open their doors to more trade and companies to invest more in U.S. factories.

The Supreme Court could rule at any time on the legitimacy of tariffs that Trump imposed unilaterally around the world that have raised hundreds of billions of dollars from the taxes on imports from abroad.

“I’m the tariff king and the tariff king has done a great job,” Trump said. “I hope we win the Supreme Court case because if we don’t, it’d be a shame for our country.”

Don't get me wrong, he's obviously always been in bed with Putin (figuratively and literally) but I'd always assumed he wanted to be the American version of Putin. But more and more it looks like he's throwing the US under the bus on purpose. Or maybe he really is genuinely as straight up stupid as some say. Whatever it is, it's super funny that he's only a quarter through his second term and has pretty much completely destroyed America's global reputation and is actively trying to start world war 3.
>>
>>1478345
Do you think the Republican House and Senate Reps would vote to leave NATO if pressured by Trump?
>>
>>1478301
I’d rather not live in a pedo plutocracy and I’d rather you weren’t shitting up the internet
>>
>>1478345
All Trump has to do is have one US troop be trigger happy enough to kill a Dane or any other European and NATO goes *poof!* It'll probably happen sooner rather than later, but we'll see.
>>
>>1478348
Absolutely fuckno. That'd be somewhere on the level of a COVID wave clearing out SCOTUS and Trump stroking out and deciding to let Schumer pick the replacements. They'd sooner cut a deal with Vance to get rid of Trump than let that shit happen. The entire point of giving Trump everything he wants is he lets them do what they want and most of them are very pro-NATO no matter how much they bitch about NATO spending.

>>1478352
We've got bigger problems if that shit happens. Or we don't. I don't think Congress is looking to let Trump start WWIII. Could legitimately trigger Trump's removal.

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said she presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday even as he has questioned her credibility to take over her country after the U.S. ousted then-President Nicolas Maduro.

Not him but I just watched the video. It shows a group of protesters doing what they are legally permitted to do, which is stand on the sidelines and protest what is going on. Then one of the government people grabs one of the protesters seemingly at random (presumably he said something, but it's garbled) and attacks him. This looks like typical video of thug police in any given 3rd world country.

What part of my descrption do you disagree with? In the video the person geabbed by the agent doesn't make a hostile gesture, let alone attack him. Is there audio I am not hearing properly? Tell me specifically, and what you think the video shows.

What do you mean by that? He's barely closer than anyone else. The agents walk up to him, not the other way around. How was he not on the sidelines? How specifically was he breaking the law with regards to what is allowed in terms of peaceful protest?

Dozens of Republicans joined all voting Democrats on Wednesday evening to reject a GOP-led effort to eliminate federal funding for a nonprofit organization accused of bias against conservatives.

Lawmakers voted 127 to 291 to strip $315 billion in funding for the State Department’s democracy promotion programs, including the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), out of a government funding package, falling well short of a majority. Republican Arizona Rep. Eli Crane, who offered the amendment, argued that although NED has the ostensible goal of promoting democracy, the organization has repeatedly promoted “anti-American objectives” and undermined freedom of speech. (RELATED: House GOP Moves To Prop Up Anti-Conservative ‘Democracy’ Org Trump Wants To Defund)

The vote split House Republicans with 127 GOP lawmakers — mostly members belonging to the conference’s conservative flank — supporting the amendment and 81 joining Democrats in voting “no.”

“Tonight, the Uniparty rejected my amendment to defund NED,” Crane wrote on X after the vote concluded. “[Eighty-one] ‘republicans’ voted with democrats to fund this rogue organization that fuels global censorship and domestic propaganda.”

“Although its name suggests a force for good, its mission has drifted far from its Cold War origins. This is a classic tactic of the swamp, where bad policy and corruption hide behind a noble title,” the Arizona Republican said on the House floor Wednesday, before the vote.

“We’ve learned that this organization has engaged in global censorship, domestic propaganda, and regime change politics,” Crane added.

The White House recommended completely defunding NED in May, citing reports that the organization doled out money to entities that attacked Republicans and sought to blacklist conservative media outlets.
>>
>>1478353 (OP)

Republican Utah Sen. Mike Lee also called on the House of Representatives to support Crane’s amendment.

“Congress shouldn’t be giving $315 million to the National Endowment for Democracy. We are not the world’s ATM,” Lee wrote on X Monday. “And yet far too many in Congress seem to think otherwise—especially when we’re asked to fund leftist vanity projects.”

Billionaire tech executive and former Department of Government Efficiency head Elon Musk has also advocated for defunding the nonprofit.

In 2020, the NED financially supported the Global Disinformation Index (GDI), a United Kingdom-based anti-free speech outfit, which designated a spate of conservative news outlets as among the “riskiest” news sources for disinformation. GDI then sent this list to major advertisers in an attempt to bleed the sites of ad revenue.

Democrats have largely defended the NED’s ostensible democracy promotion efforts around the world.

“In Ukraine, democracy programs helped document Russian war crimes against women and children. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, they fight corruption and strengthen the rule of law. In Pakistan, they promote religious tolerance and protect minority communities,” Democratic Florida Rep. Lois Frankel said during floor debate.

“These investments are not charity. They’re prevention,” Frankel continued, adding that NED’s investments reduce the likelihood of conflicts that could force U.S. intervention.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2026/01/14/minneapolis-shooting-federal-law-enforcement-investigation/88188335007/

A federal agent shot a person in the leg in Minneapolis on Wednesday after being assaulted during an arrest, the Department of Homeland Security said, sparking further protests in a city on edge after the deadly shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent earlier this month.

In a statement on X, Homeland Security said that federal officers were conducting a "targeted" traffic stop in Minneapolis at about 6:50 p.m. local time. The traffic stop involved a Venezuelan national, who the agency claimed was in the United States without authorization.

The person initially fled from federal agents in a vehicle but crashed into a parked car and then took off on foot, according to Homeland Security. An officer attempted to apprehend the person and was assaulted, the agency said.

While they were on the ground struggling, Homeland Security said "two subjects came out of a nearby apartment and also attacked the law enforcement officer with a snow shovel and broom handle."

"Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired a defensive shot to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg," Homeland Security said. "All three subjects ran back into the apartment and barricaded themselves inside."

The negative number is mostly due to a drop in entries, the report said.

https://abcnews.go.com/US/us-1st-time-50-years-experienced-negative-net/story

The U.S. experienced negative net migration in 2025 for the first time in at least half a century as a result of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown, according to a report released Tuesday by the Brookings Institution.

Although the administration has undertaken aggressive removal efforts, the negative number is mostly due to a significant drop in entries into the U.S., the report said.

"We estimate net flows of -295,000 to -10,000 for the year," the Brookings study stated. "Though a high degree of policy uncertainty remains, continued negative net migration for 2026 is also likely."

The report attributed the shift to combination of the large drop in entries and an increase in enforcement activity leading to removals and voluntary departures.

The Trump administration's suspension of many humanitarian programs -- including most refugee programs with the exception of those involving white South Africans -- and a decline in temporary visas also contributed to the negative net migration, the report said.

The report's authors estimate there were between 310,000 and 315,000 removals in 2025, a figure lower than what the administration has claimed. Department of Homeland Security officials claim that, so far, more than 600,000 people have been removed during the crackdown.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to invoke the rarely used Insurrection Act to quell unrest over federal immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis.

He threatened to send in troops following a night of protests and vandalism in the Minnesota city after an agent shot a man in the leg.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said an officer opened fire after he was attacked by three Venezuelan nationals with a shovel and broom handle.

Tensions have been running high in Minneapolis since an immigration agent fatally shot Renee Nicole Good, 37, last week, sparking nationwide protests.

The Insurrection Act is a 19th Century law that allows active-duty military personnel to be deployed for law enforcement duties inside the US.

Trump has previously said he might invoke the 1807 law elsewhere without ever doing so.

"What we saw last night in Minneapolis was an attempted murder of federal law enforcement," said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.

She said the officer was "ambushed and attacked" by the men and fired a defensive shot.

On Wednesday night, clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement in the Hawthorne area of Minneapolis, near the scene of the shooting.

City police chief Brian O'Hara said his officers were hit by fireworks, ice and snowballs.

Several vehicles belonging to the federal government were damaged in the disorder, and property was stolen from inside the vehicles, according to the FBI.

The FBI said on Thursday that it was offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the "recovery of stolen government property and/or the arrest of individuals responsible for the destruction and theft of government property".

Around 3,000 federal officers have been deployed to Minnesota in recent weeks.

Trump has said Operation Metro Surge will continue in Minnesota after a federal judge on Wednesday denied Minnesota prosecutors a temporary restraining order against US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Tensions over immigration enforcement have been running high in the city since the fatal shooting on 7 January of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent.

The Trump administration says the ICE agent acted in self-defence, while local officials argue the woman posed no danger.

Videos of the incident show ICE agents approaching a car, which is in the middle of the street.

As Good turns her wheel and appears to make an attempt to drive off, her car pulls forward and one of the agents near the front of the vehicle points his gun at the driver and fires three shots. The FBI is investigating the incident.

An online fundraiser set up for Good's widow and family has raised more than $1.4m. Another online fundraiser for Jonathan Ross, the ICE agent at the centre of the deadly confrontation, has raised $740,000.

>The United States is indefinitely suspending immigrant visa processing from 75 countries in another expansion of the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration.

>The pause in processing will apply to countries including Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Haiti, Somalia and Russia. The suspension applies to immigrant visas, such as those for employment or to join family in the US. The pause does not apply to non-immigrant visas like student and tourist visas, and as such would not apply for those seeking to travel to the World Cup in the US this summer.

https://www.mprnews.org/story/2025/11/18/twin-cities-ice-employee-among-16-arrested-in-child-sex-trafficking-sting

A Twin Cities-based employee of Immigration and Customs Enforcement is among 16 men arrested on suspicion of soliciting a minor following a sting operation by police in suburban Minneapolis.

Alexander Steven Back, 41, is among four people charged so far with trying to pay a 17-year-old girl for sex. Back could also face federal charges, Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges said at a news conference on Tuesday.

Authorities said that they’ve submitted evidence against the other 12 men to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for possible charges.

According to the criminal complaint filed Friday in Hennepin County, Back, of Robbinsdale, responded to a fake online advertisement “offering prostitution services.”

In a text message to Back on Nov. 13, an undercover officer posing as a 17-year-old girl named Bella wrote “U ok if I’m a lil younger than my ad says … just wanna be honest.”

“Sure,” Back allegedly replied.

“K cause I am 17 and one guy got hella mad at me,” the officer replied.

GoFundMe campaigns have raised over $800,000 for a Ford employee who was suspended after heckling Trump.
Video shows Trump giving the middle finger after someone shouted "pedophile protector" at him.
United Auto Workers, the union that represents the Ford plant, said it's reviewing the employee's suspension.

A Ford employee who was suspended after heckling President Donald Trump has sparked an outpouring of crowdfunding support.

The GoFundMe donations, totaling over $800,000 in less than 24 hours, come after the Ford line worker, TJ Sabula, told The Washington Post that he heckled Trump during the President's visit to his workplace.

Trump visited a Michigan plant on Tuesday where the automaker builds its best-selling F-150 full-size pickup truck. The brief visit was intended to highlight the White House's commitment to rebuilding the US workforce and Ford's focus on rebuilding a blue-collar workforce pipeline.

Video from the event obtained by TMZ shows Trump gesturing after someone shouted "pedophile protector" — which Sabula has since said was him — in an apparent reference to White House's delay in releasing the full Epstein files. The President can be seen raising his middle finger after the remark and mouthing an expletive.

The White House told several news outlets that Trump was appropriately responding to "a lunatic" who "was wildly screaming expletives in a complete fit of rage."

https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/maga-coded-cbs-anchor-suffers-202802569.html

CBS Evening News’ new MAGA-coded anchor Tony Dokoupil suffered a ratings plunge on his first four nights on the job, new figures have revealed.

He lost as much as a fifth of the most important part of his audience between his first show on Monday Jan. 5 and Thursday Jan. 8.

Dokoupil was given the anchor seat once held by Walter Cronkite by new CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, herself a controversial figure who was installed in the job by CBS’ new owner, billionaire nepo-baby David Ellison.

On Tuesday the network said he would interview the ultimate MAGA figure, Donald Trump, after using a bogus Trump claim as fact on air on his second week in the job.

Dokoupil had a rough first performance in the primetime slot on Monday Jan. 5 as he stumbled over the teleprompter and introduced himself twice in under two minutes. The broadcast saw several seconds of dead air between segment transitions.

According to Nielsen’s preliminary measurement obtained by the Daily Beast, Dokoupil drew in more than 4.4 million total viewers for his first show.

But ratings for the program steadily declined as the week went on. On Tuesday, 4.3 million total people tuned in, 4.1 million on Wednesday, and 3.9 million on Thursday—an 11.4% loss over the week.

Yes, because Biden was a lame duck president. He was boring and typical, certainly not good, but nothing like the shit show going on now. MAGA had a four year long tantrum over him and lost their shit with memes abouthow he's old and senile and looks like a pedophile. Meanwhile now we have Trump back who can barely string a sentence together, doesn't even know how to pronounce acetaminophen and as described bybthe man himself, one of Jeffery Epstien's best friends and now refusing to release the pedophile files, it's a whole different situation.

Pretty much this. The biggest trouble with America is that they have one corporate party which is split into two Coke and Pepsi brands which do the same things but have a slightly different veneer. Then they snipe at each other complaining that one is a radicalized left-wing party bordering on communism and the other is ultra conservative. In reality, neither of them have either left wing progressive policies or right wing conservative policies, the only policy is corporatization and the funneling of wealth upwards. No one can break the cycle because to do so you would have to be in the upper ranks just for the possibility of shaking things up, but no one gets close if they don't play ball. Hence, Bernie Sanders can get minor wins here or there but was never going to be let into the upper ranks. At the same time, AOC who started off presenting as a feisty socialist flushed half her principles down the toilet in order to cozy up to the establishment.
>>
>>1478233
Biden would have been more effective if the American electorate hadn't done the usual "Let's just fucking cripple him in the midterms" thing. They ALWAYS pull that shit and then wonder why there aren't any improvements being made any more.
>>
Doesn't really matter. Plan A was to turn the network's viewers conservative, but failing that killing the network entirely is a perfectly fine Plan B.

The Federal Reserve has quietly delivered nearly half a trillion dollars to Wall Street with few strings attached over the past few months through an obscure government financial program intended for banks struggling to make cash payments.

These cash infusions signal instability in the broader financial sector. The New York Federal Reserve, a regional branch of the larger central bank that works to maintain the country’s financial stability, kicked off the new year by dumping nearly $97 billion into the banking sector since December 31, 2025.

The move is the latest in a series of major cash transfers the New York Federal Reserve has recently delivered to Wall Street.

The infusions began with an $11 billion transfer on June 30. In October, the transfers became much more frequent, culminating in a massive $50 billion infusion on Halloween, as first reported by investigative news outlet DCReport. In total, after doling out little to no money since July 2020, the New York Federal Reserve has transferred more than $420 billion to Wall Street in the past seven months — a record amount from the program.

For comparison, that lump sum is nearly equivalent to the pot of money that Congress passed to bail out the banks during the 2008 financial crisis under the Troubled Asset Relief Program.

Amid the deluge, the central bank has encouraged Wall Street to make use of the program and lifted its $500 billion cap on such transactions, meaning there is no limit to how much banks can borrow to meet their cash liquidity needs.

All of these cash infusions, issued through an arcane and newly restructured division of the New York Federal Reserve branch, amount to some of the largest cash bailouts since the COVID-19 pandemic sent shock waves through financial markets in 2020.

Experts argue that this uptick in lending indicate that banks do not have the liquid cash on hand to make payments and dole out loans.

https://www.semafor.com/article/01/14/2026/us-gets-first-500-million-venezuelan-oil-deal-holding-some-proceeds-in-qatar

The Trump administration’s first sale of Venezuelan oil is valued at $500 million, an administration official told Semafor.

The sale marks an initial milestone in the administration’s management of Venezuela after the US ouster of its former leader, Nicolás Maduro, 11 days ago. President Donald Trump has indicated that the US would effectively run Venezuela for an indeterminable amount of time and take control of up to 50 million barrels of its oil — marketing and selling it while distributing the proceeds back to Venezuela in an arrangement with little precedent.

Trump signed an executive order on Friday that provided some details on how the US plans to block courts or creditors from tapping any revenue from those oil sales. Venezuela owes international bondholders, oil companies and others as much as $170 billion — one reason why US firms have been reluctant to help rebuild the country’s infrastructure.

Trump told ConocoPhillips CEO Ryan Lance last week that the US is “not going to look at what people lost in the past, because that was their fault.”

The administration official told Semafor that the interim leadership in Venezuela, led by former Maduro No. 2 Delcy Rodríguez, has “fully cooperated” since the US-Venezuelan energy deal was announced last week, adding that the US has “leverage” through sanctions and oil sales.

Revenue from the oil sales is currently being held in bank accounts controlled by the US government, as indicated in Friday’s order, according to the administration official. The main account, according to a second senior administration official, is located in Qatar.

The second official described Qatar as a neutral location where money can flow freely with US approval and without risk of seizure. Trump’s order noted that at least some of the revenue would be held in US Treasury accounts.

Personal information of 4,500 ICE and Border Patrol agents leaked online
ICE List website says it was leaked information about federal agents after shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis

Details of thousands of alleged ICE agents and Border Patrol employees have reportedly been leaked to an online watchdog group following the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis.

The identities of around 4,500 federal agents were shared with the ICE List website by a Department of Homeland Security whistleblower, according to The Daily Beast.

The data includes information on around 2,000 agents and 150 supervisors, according to Dominick Skinner, who launched ICE List. Early analysis from the volunteer-led organization suggests that around 80 per cent of those identified are still employed by the DHS.

“It is a sign that people aren’t happy within the U.S. government, clearly. The shooting was the last straw for many people,” Skinner told the outlet.
