European Digital Sovereignty: Why Supporting Local Tech Matters in 2025

In an era of geopolitical uncertainty and escalating tensions between Europe and the U.S., digital sovereignty is more critical than ever. Recent trade disputes, data privacy conflicts, and the risk of sanctions or regulatory clashes highlight the vulnerabilities of relying on American tech platforms. European companies, bound by strict GDPR regulations, prioritize user privacy and data protection—values that align with the interests of European citizens and businesses.

By choosing European alternatives, you’re not only safeguarding your privacy but also supporting innovation, economic resilience, and technological independence. Below is a curated list of European alternatives to popular American apps, complete with links to help you make the switch.

I forgot two important categories.

10. Translation

DeepL is renowned for its highly accurate and nuanced translations, leveraging advanced AI models trained on vast multilingual datasets. It supports a wide range of languages and offers both free and professional plans, making it a top choice for individuals and businesses seeking precise, natural-sounding translations.

11. Antivirus & Cybersecurity

G DataGermanyDual-engine scanning, banking security, made in Germany, strong privacy focus
AviraGermanyFree antivirus, real-time protection, VPN, system optimization tools

Note that Avast and Avira have been acquired by a US-based multinational a few years ago.

BitDefender is generally considered the best antivirus on the market, although ESET is the best rated (4.9) on Play Store.

12. Ride-Hailing apps

Alternatives to Uber.

AppCountrySpecial Features
BoltEstoniaAffordable rides, electric scooters, and food delivery; operates in 45+ countries, strong focus on safety and driver fairness
CabifySpainOperating in Spain, Portugal, and several Latin American countries. It stands out for its focus on safety, sustainability, and professional drivers.
HeetchFranceFocuses on nightlife and late-night rides, strong presence in France and Belgium, community-driven approach
WheelySwitzerland/UKPremium ride-hailing, focuses on business travelers, high-end vehicles, available in select European cities

Note that the German app Free Now was acquired by the American company Lyft in July 2025, so I didn't list it here.

13. Food Delivery apps

Alternatives to Uber Eats

AppCountrySpecial Features
DeliverooUKWide restaurant selection, fast delivery, premium "Deliveroo Plus" subscription for free deliveries
Just Eat TakeawayNetherlandsPartners with local restaurants, no delivery fees for many eateries, strong presence in Europe
GlovoSpainDelivers food, groceries, and pharmacy items; operates in 25+ countries, "Glovo Prime" for unlimited free deliveries
WoltFinlandFocuses on high-quality restaurant partnerships, user-friendly app, available in 100+ cities
FlinkGermanyUltra-fast grocery and food delivery (10-15 minutes), dark store model, eco-friendly delivery options
GorillasGermanyRapid grocery delivery, dark store network, strong focus on convenience and speed

Just Eat and Takeaway.com were originally teo distinct companies founded respectively in Denmark and the Netherlands. They merged in 2020 and the company is based in Amsterdam. In my experience it is far superior to Uber Eats. The app is easier to use, with more filters, clearer opening times, and cheaper delivery fees for the same restaurants.

Caveat: Note that Deliveroo and Wolt were acquired by the American company DoorDash in 2025 and 2022 respectively. So, although they are still based in Europe, the ownership is not European anymore.

Why Choose European Alternatives?

European ride-hailing and food delivery apps often prioritize fair labor practices, local partnerships, and sustainable business models. By using these services, you support companies that align with European values—such as worker rights, environmental responsibility, and community engagement—while enjoying competitive pricing and innovative features.

There is no real European alternative to Amazon Kindle. Many European book stores sell ebooks that can be read on the variety of European eBook reading apps (and devices), but there isn't any comprehensive multi-language online bookstore with its own reading app and in-app book purchases like Kindle. However the Japanese company Rakuten Kobo is very similar to Kindle and has many partnerships with European book sellers.

I've been using ProtonMail for many years now and it's truly the best free e-mail provider I know. Firefox is still my main browser but I have recently tried Vivaldi and was very impressed.

Choosing the European cloud means:
  • data that stays in Europe
  • protection under European law
  • freedom from extraterritorial legislation

Here is a website that explains why some American websites problematic and what safer European alternatives are available.

If you are looking for a privacy-focused alternative to Google Photos that stores data within the EU and offers smart search features, here is a comparison of the top-rated options as of 2026.

Koofr€4/mo (250GB) to €20/mo (2.5TB)NoFilename OnlyYes
PhotoPrismFree (Software) + Server CostsYes (Local)Yes (Local)Yes

Key Takeaways

  • For Smart Features: Ente Photos is the only cloud provider that matches Google's "smart search" (searching for "cats" or "faces") while keeping your data encrypted so they can't see it. It performs all AI recognition locally on your phone.
  • For Long-Term Value: pCloud is the most affordable if you choose their Lifetime plan and select the Luxembourg data center. However, you lose the ability to search for content inside your photos (search is filename-based only).
  • For Maximum Privacy: Cryptee is headquartered in Estonia and offers the most "hardened" privacy features, though it is more expensive and requires more manual organization (tagging).
  • For Power Users: PhotoPrism offers the best AI features but requires you to host the software yourself on a home server or a private VPS.
