Walz: call up the National Guard to protect the people.

Yes, Trump is clearly trying to bait a violent response. Regardless, Expecting people to stay peaceful while they’re beaten, kidnapped, disappeared and murdered by their federal government while their state does nothing meaningful is fucking WILD.

ICE murdered Renee Good a few days ago. Yesterday they dragged an autistic woman out of her car while she screamed “I’m autistic, it takes me a minute to understand.” They kidnap children from work at Target, rough the up, then dump them in a Walmart parking lot. They kidnapped a NYC city official at a court hearing the other day. They’ve going door to door in Minneapolis, forcing entry without warrants.

None of that is “propaganda.” It’s video proof that we’ve seen with our own eyes.

Shits hitting the fan. Stay ignorant if you want.

I’ve never really been anti-gun, but I have always been “it really shouldn’t be this damn easy to buy a gun, especially ones designed explicitly to kill as many humans as fast as possible.”

The moment Trump was elected a second time after trying to literally overthrow the government, I knew we were cooked and no one is going to defend us but ourselves. Now I’m glad that I can own the variety of weapons I have. Ive been building up my armory ever since. ICE in Minnesota and the continued escalation is really sending me down the “this won’t end well” spiral and I’m preparing as fast as possible.

What do I need if SHTF? What do I need if SHTF?
question

I’ve been a gun owner for most of my life and practice regularly. I grew up with extremely conservative family, and while I was always turned off by the right-wing “gun nuts” ranting about how Obama/Biden/Dems were going to take away all the guns and fantasizing about post-apocalyptic scenarios fighting the government, I’ve always believed in responsible and reasonable gun ownership for sport and personal defense. I used to think people were crazy to think that law abiding citizens would ever have to defend against the US government— I thought we had developed democratic systems and moved past that.

Well, the current political environment is rapidly changing my mind. ICE is ignoring all forms of due process and constitutional rights, kidnapping and murdering US Citizens and immigrants alike, and suddenly having to defend ourselves against a tyrannical government doesn’t seem so far-fetched.

I hope I’m overreacting, but I want to be prepared in case SHTF and civil war breaks out / martial law is declared. I’m not going to stand by if an unidentified masked goon tries to abduct or kill me or my US-born wife because she happens to be brown.

This is my current firearms setup:

- valid CCW permit

- 12 gauge tactical shotgun w/ 250 rounds 00 buckshot

- 9 mm semi auto w/ 100 rounds JHP and 250 rounds FMJ

- .308 Winchester bolt action “deer rifle” w/ 100 rounds FMJ

- .22lr revolver and .22lr carbine semiauto w/ 1000 rounds HP

- 12 gauge 28” barrel shotgun (full choke). 250 rounds of target ammo

From a SHTF personal defense perspective, what would be the top priorities to augment my current set up? Different guns? More ammo? Body armor?

No, I don’t agree with your assertion that “terminal velocity ammunition” means anything.

The difference between JHP and FMJ ammunition is important in terms of lethality. JHP is designed to mushroom and becomes shrapnel and causes far more damage in the target. However, FMJ runs the risk of over penetration: going through one target and hitting another unintended target. There are tradeoffs, but it’s interesting to note that HP ammunition is prohibited in war under the Geneva conventions, so most militaries use FMJ and yet most police domestic agencies use JHP.

Some firearms are designed to be fired two handed, some are meant to be fired one handed. I do not know which specific firearm Jonathan Ross had.

He is a reckless murderer, though. Fuck Jonathan Ross and fuck ICE.

“JHP terminal velocity ammunition” means absolutely nothing in terms of the difficulty of “retaining a firearm.”

All ammunition reaches a terminal velocity (ie its max speed) and it’s usually slower for a JHP than say a FMJ round.

Factors that affect the recoil/retainabilty of a gun include firearm caliber, projectile weight, amount of propellant, barrel length and weight of the firearm.

Trump is a symptom, not the disease. Getting rid of Trump may temporally set these people back, but unless we do a sweeping removal of the thousands of government officials who supported this, couples with a total shift in education and much more robust limitations on the powers of branches and individuals in government, it’s only a matter of time until the next cult of personality arises.

Male perspective. My peak days are behind me, but at one point I was basically a Jason Mamoa body double.

It’s a mixed bag. I definitely get a lot of privileges. Jobs like to put me in front of clients as a “face” of the company. People have offered me a lot of free drinks, food, and general stuff. I’ve never had any issue getting dates/sex (though finding a meaningful relationship was still extremely hard - people are shallow).

Honestly the biggest downside was my inability to be “invisible.” I don’t like/want attention all the time and I really wish I could just blend in sometimes. I’ve had countless drunk women at bars completely disrespect me by grabbing my face to forcibly stare into my eyes, feeling my arms/chest/abs without even saying hello, and even grabbing my ass/dick through my pants.

I was sexually assaulted by a passing woman on the street in a foreign country once and I had to be extremely careful not to harm her when pushing her off or otherwise be seen as the aggressor. That interaction really bothered me, but when I told my then-girlfriend what happened, I later overheard her telling her friend saying “I don’t know why he’s so bothered by that woman grabbing him. Worse things happen to women every day.”
If you’re reading this: fuck you, Karen.

Even if you could find one, which is very unlikely because there are plenty of good salespeople stateside, you could would need to have a work permit for every country that you worked from. Contrary to popular belief, “digital nomads” need work permits most places, otherwise you’re breaking the law and risk fines/deportation/jail.

Getting the proper permits is often an incredibly long, laborious, expensive process.

Unless you’re a manufacturer/retailer who can bulk donate specifically needed items, donation of money is usually greatly preferred. Donated individual items are appreciated, but they require labor and resources to transport, sort, store, manage and distribute.

Food banks can make $1 go way farther than any individual can because they can buy in bulk at vastly discounted prices, tax free. Also, there are a lot of operating costs for a food bank, and donating money helps keep the lights on.

Something you’re interested in. Tech, luxury cars, real estate. It doesn’t really matter as long as it’s something that you can learn inside and out. You want to become an expert in whatever you sell. You’ll see more if you believe in the product/service.

Which company: to make the most, you want to work for the market leader in whatever you sell. Big brand names are easier to sell and the sales tend to be larger.

Sales can be a grind, but the paychecks can be huge.

I worked for a long while at a company that had an industrial fridge with sliding glass doors, like you’d see in a gas station, that was filled to the brim with beer, wine and a little bit of liquor. The first day I met the CEO, he was sitting at a table in his office drinking a tall boy and first thing he said was “I hope you don’t mind, this is my third one.”

Best company I’ve ever worked for.

I moved out of sales because I was beyond burnt out on the pressure and the constant grind. I closed the largest deal in my firms history on a Friday and the next Monday they increased the next year’s quota by 50%. That’s not sustainable.

I loved the money and the status of a high earning career, but it’s not worth my mental health.

Very happy in the personal aspects of my life, but I’m miserable at work.

As I said in my post, I’m beyond burnt out. I moved from sales because I didn’t want the constant pressure, but now I feel like my job is just one replaceable cog in a massive machine. Can’t imagine having to do this for 30+ years.

I don’t have much interest in additional investment real estate. It’s far too active of an investment for relatively low returns. Those returns can go up with leverage, but I don’t really want to take on any more debt.

The only way I think I’d take on another rental property is if I moved, bout a new primary home, and rented out the previous primary residence.

It’s not meant to be a brag. It’s meant to seek advice because I feel stuck. I’m at a position where I’m comfortable, but FIRE still seems far off.

I realize that I’m in a better financial position than most; but isn’t that the goal of this sub?

750k net worth at 30. How am I doing? 750k net worth at 30. How am I doing?

I spent the first 8 years of my career in sales and was able to save aggressively while also living a fairly comfortable lifestyle and traveling a lot on shoestring budget (skiplagging flights, multi-dorm hostels, picking destinations with favorable conversion rates, etc).

  • 260k in retirement accounts (VOO/VXUS and chill)

  • 200k in taxable brokerage accounts (mostly VOO, some hand picked stocks that have done above average)

  • 10k in cash equivalents

  • 200k in home equity (190k still owed at 2.75%)

  • 70k equity in a rental (110k owed at 3.25% with 500/month cash flow positive which is paying down the loan faster)

  • 8k blue book Paid off motorcycle (depreciating asset, don’t count toward my net worth)

  • 18k primary car (with 4k left on a 2% note)

I make 115k/year now in a non-sales role, maxing my 401k and Roth IRA. It’s a pretty big pay cut compared to the commission checks.

My expenses are rather high because I am supporting my wife through finishing nursing school debt-free so most of the shared expenses + any splurges fall on me. Truthfully, I’m beyond burnt out on corporate America and I dream of FIRE or BaristaFire by 40. Honestly the biggest challenge to this is getting my wife on board with expense cutting: we grew up with different relationships with money and she’s just no where near as frugal as me.

  • should I pay off the car loan outright?

  • should I be aggressive paying off the rental? It’s such a low interest rate I’m tempted to invest the excess monthly cash instead.

  • any tips for helping get your partner more on board with expense cutting?
